Exploration: Like all metals gold is mostly in the earth waiting to be mined. This also means that the metal needs to be worth mining because you cannot simply just dig a hole and leave it behind once you are done. To start mining gold the most common way to find it is by prospecting. Prospecting is mostly done by a range of different metal detectors, these metals detectors are a scientific and technological advancement to finding gold. They give accurate readings and indicating where the gold is by an average of how far down the ore is. The advancement is that it is much less strenuous work than using a pan like our ancestors did in the gold rush of Australia and many people find fool’s gold (copper) and think it is gold. The gold that we look for is from the Archaean Period (3.5billion years ago) and due to its rarity it does make it quiet valuable.
Mining: Before all these mines have been set up the company must create a living environment for people and families, without these many workers would not even attempt to work at the mine. Some requirements are basic; each one must have a home, a sustainable food supply that must meet dietary standards of not just workers but anyone else there too, a water supply for obvious reason and recreational activities for when workers have break and need something to do instead of just standing around. Science has a major role with the setup phase of a mining community because all this needs to be cost effective and have a mutual agreement with any other land owners whether they own the land or of a specific ethnic group, without this agreement no mine can go forward. Once the mine has been completed you also can’t just have an open hole in the ground, environmental experts have to survey ...

...the highest purity of gold but comes with the risk of worker damage. It shares the scientific use of an electrolytic process. The gold is used as a cathode and hydrochloric acid is the electrolyte. This is where the danger and risk comes into play, hydrochloric acid is a corrosive substance that eats through human tissue and can create potential damage to respiratory organs so workers have to be fully geared for their own safety. Gold is dissolved at the anode and the pure gold is travelling through the acid by an ion transfer, the non-pure gold is then plated onto the cathode. The other metals that maybe present in this are silver, copper and platinum. They can all be easily removed at this stage. This procedure is used on a very large industrial scale and has a large set up cost due to the amount of gold that needs to be permanently dissolved in the electrolyte.
