Migration & Travel: I grew up in the Greater Toronto Area, as a result of my parents’ emigration from Montreal as young adults. For my parents, both coming from working class backgrounds, they both faced limited geographical mobility during youth, which studies have shown to be significant in determining the migration path when presented with the opportunity (Molgat, 2010). More concretely, political reasons as well as the search of better opportunities played a role in many young adults leaving Montreal in the 1970s and 1980s. The “Quiet Revolution” that took place in the post-war era in Quebec meant many socio-cultural changes and a reframing of the French Quebecois identity (McRoberts, 1988). Just as throughout history, migratory patterns have often been shaped by exclusion – my English-speaking parents choice to leave Montreal, along with much of their cohort, marks a logical generational trend. Personally, although vigilant about my safety and society both at home and aboard, I feel as if travelling despite that is a way of reclaiming and reiterating my right to exist and take up space. I have always been fiercely independent, and was raised to be a strong, independent woman by many like that in my family. My aunt, in fact, did a round the world solo trip before the age of 23. Hearing the stories of her journey, knowing that it was possible to escape the routine of home and experience something new, always inspired me. Research has shown the five key motivators for solo travel to be: experiencing new places, escape from “reality”, relaxation, social opportunities, and increased self-esteem (Chiang, 2006). These are all things that I strongly value, in and outside of my desire to travel, that have been shaped by my surroundings growing
Although Quebec is in Canada, a majority of Quebecers do not identify with the national identity of Canada. Both societies create a sense of identity as well as nationalism (Hiller, 295). Hiller mentions two approaches to assessing Canadian identity; the unitary approach and the segmentalist approach (Hiller, 277). The unitary approach suggests that society consists of people who regardless of their ethnic back ground, identify as belonging to the national society, while the segmentalist approach concentrates on groups and communities that share racial, linguistic, occupational, or cultural similarities (Hiller, 28). While most Anglophones are more unitary or pan-Canadian, Quebec heavily identifies with the segmentalist approach. This dissimilarity of identity perspective may be problematic for the country, at the same time however, it can also be viewed as a struggle where contradictory parties find a way to compromise and reshape Canadian society together (Hiller, 277). According to the Commission, this participation was real under two conditions: “that both societies, the French-speaking as well as the English-speaking, accept[ed] newcomers much more rapidly than they have done in the past; and that the two societies willingly allow other groups to preserve and enrich, if they so desire, the cultural values they prize[d]” (RCBB Book 1 xxv). It creates an interesting take on the acceptance of those “othered” groups, as change was necessary not only on the part of the minorities but also from Canada’s French and English-speakers. The Commissions work remains focused on language and culture, more so than ethnicity amongst a bilingual, bicultural and “othered” Canadian society.
During 1910-1970 the great migration was taking place, which was the movement of southern African American’s to the north/northern cities. The great migration was an event that seemed as if it was unstoppable and that it was going to happen. In the South African American’s faced racial discrimination, sharecropping, bad working conditions, low wages, racial segregation and political detriments. This is all supported by documents 1-4. Canada was determined to create a strong nation state during the first few decades of the twentieth century. Immigrants from various countries moved to Canada in hopes of prospering in a country that promised them so much. But not every immigrant was treated fairly. This is why intersectionality is necessary to consider because of existing complexities that exist within different groups of people. It is essential to examine the intersections of class, race/ethnicity, and gender, in order to understand why particular migrant groups experienced certain social and economic inequalities in the first three decades of the twentieth century.
The Great Migration was a huge rural movement that occur in the southern United States, it was the movement of 6 million blacks. It began in the earlier 1900 all the way the 1970. The 14 states the blacks were moving from were from the south. The main states were Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. The first big movement was between the 1910 and 1930s. There was around a little bit over 1.5 million people moving from rural areas to the industrial cities in the north.
