Border Wars: America’s Dilemma with Mexico James Truslow Adams first coined the phrase “America, the Land of Opportunity” in his 1931 book The Epic of America. (Library of Congress link). America is a nation of immigrants. Most racial and ethnic groups who seek to enter American borders do so searching for a better life of a new beginning. Some immigrants seek to enter illegally for other reasons. Now, more than ever, American citizens are concerned about their personal safety and believe that the country needs to make its borders more secure. within its boundaries. They move and change over time due to violence, sale, or war. Having a secure border is an important part of being a strong nation. Maintaining secure borders allow nations to protect themselves from foreign invaders; this includes humans, pests, and disease. An example of this could be the 2015 measles outbreak at Disney Land, California. In the year 2000 the Centers for Disease Control reported that measles was eliminated in the United States of America, mostly due to required vaccinations for American citizens. During the February outbreak, at least forty people contracted the measles at Disney Land and from there it has now spread to six states. It is unknown whether that is due to unvaccinated non-citizens or biological terrorism. In recent years, the United States and Canada have worked together well concerning legal border crossing. The countries govern in similar in many ways, and there have not been large numbers of Canadians seeking to migrate to America. Mexico, on the other hand, has been a problem ever since America began to push its borders west. As early as 1904, The United States Immigration Service patrolled border crossings. The Border Patrol was created in 1924 because of border issues as well as drug smuggling and illegal immigration. They began securing areas between border crossings and along sea coasts. Over time, the Mexican government and other Central American countries became more and more corrupt, and the numbers of immigrants and criminals crossing illegally began to increase. The Eighteenth Amendment placed numerical limits on immigration to prevent mass migration and the overload of national resources. The transport of illegal drugs is one reason the border with Mexico should be more secure.
From 2000 to 2010 taxpayers spent ninety billion dollars on patrolling the Mexican border. It cost one hundred and ten million dollars a year to station National Guard troops, hire U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents, and purchase x-ray machines to scan train cars and trucks. During 2010, the border patrol captured three and a half million pounds of marijuana, two hundred and fifty-four thousand pounds of cocaine, and four thousand two hundred pounds of heroin. Americans. As if the illegal drug trade and fear of biological and chemical weapons crossing the border is not enough these crossings leave massive amounts of trash in the desert. On average, two thousand tons of trash is left on the Arizona section of the border alone. Many people are afraid to clean up the trash for fear of encountering the smugglers. The United States Government spent sixty-three million dollars to clean up twenty-five million pounds of trash (when). One way of helping to stop illegal immigrants from crossing the border is to update the entry process of becoming a U.S. citizen. At this time, Immigration Control only allows five thousand low skilled green card workers into the country a year. These workers do the jobs that many Americans refuse to do; like service jobs in farming, fishing, and forestry. Many of them earn their living picking crops and slaughtering animals for food. Only .5% of United States Citizens participate in these jobs compared to 4% of illegal immigrants. Improving the process would allow honest, law-abiding immigrants entrance and, therefore, those caught crossing illegally could be detained and returned to Mexico. Securing the United States border with Mexico is a great financial expense, but it is necessary to reduce the entrance of drugs, criminals, and potential terrorists into the country. It is something that America cannot ignore and expect safety and security in its borders. In fact, in light of recent terrorist attacks it might be a good idea to increase security not only at the borders but also within the country. It is time to separate those who seek the American Dream from those who seek to destroy it.

It is a compelling description and concise history of the first successful offensive war in United States military history. The work examines two countries that were unprepared for war. The political intrigues and quarrels in appointing the military commanders, as well as the military operations of the war, are presented and analyzed in detail. The author also analyzes the role that the Mexican War played in bringing on the U.S. Civil War.
I was able to relate to when Jessie said that borders are symbols of the divisions we make of each other. These borders are made up by people to keep each other apart from one another. Whether it is for social, economic, or cultural reasons, the division remains. As Brooke pointed out, these borders prevent freedoms and deny opportunities.

The threat of war can pressure a nation to waste immense amounts of money on defense instead of spending on developmental works like creating roads, hospitals, schools, and much more. War can halt a countries development. Some countries try to achieve political desires by using terrorism as a weapon against other countries. Terrorism spreads fear in civilians through acts of violence like killings and hostages. This intimidation has transformed into worldwide threat.

Children feel depressed in cases like this because even at a young age they know that things are not okay. Methods for arriving in the United States varied for each individual’s preference of the destination, but the means of transportation had been constant throughout. These methods of transportation consisted of contractors seeking unskilled workers willing to partake in hard labor in steel, railroad, or agriculture companies. Perhaps the war was inevitable due to the idea of Manifest Destiny - Americans thought they had the divine right to extend their territory. The Mexican-American War started mainly because of the annexation of the Republic of Texas (established in 1836 after breaking away from Mexico). The United States and Mexico still had conflicts on what the borders of Texas was, the United States claimed that the Texas border with Mexico was the Rio Grande, but the Mexicans said that it was the Nueces River, so the land in between were disputed and claimed by both the United States and Mexico.

The CBP is a component of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and was formed in 2003. “It is one of the world’s largest law enforcement organizations and is charged with keeping terrorists and their weapons out of the U.S” (CBP). One of the departments of the CBP is border security, which is a team of individuals that work together to protect our country from “illegal immigrants, narcotics smuggling, and illegal importation” (CBP). Border patrol was established in 1924 and has changed dramatically over the decades. The one aspect that has not changed is “the overall mission to detect and prevent the illegal entry of aliens into the U.S” (CBP). The border patrol is responsible for patrolling the 6,000 miles of Mexican and Canadian land borders and 2,000 miles of coastal waters. Therefore, in order for the United States to be successful in securing the nation’s border, there is an essential need for border security.
