Meteorology is my playground and laboratory. For a years on end, I have collected weather maps, radar images, LiDAR images, remote sensing data, and other scientific material for sheer enjoyment. Since my graduation from high school, I began to understand that I should commit myself academically and professionally to what gives me substance and joy. My plan is to acquire the data to identify and explore structures and features of of the earth and its atmosphere; SFSU’s LINGUISTIC DEPARTMENT offers me the resources to realize my vision.
In 2011, I obtained my high school diploma with high honors from Buxmont Christian Educational Institute. Since that time, I have developed myself socially, professionally and intellectually in ways complementary to my aspirations in SFSU’s LINGUISTICS PROGRAM. My first inclination upon graduation was to enter Cornell University. In those four years, I took classes such as meteorological observations and instruments, differential equations, computer programming, and dynamics. In addition to instilling the predictable reverence for hard work and dedication, my university experience served as an exposition on my desire to do independent scientific research. I found research to be especially pervasive in Cornell where some of the top professors in the US work. In bearing witness to this phenomenon of scientific research, I became an ardent researcher myself, and was therefore quite happy to learn that LiDAR remote sensing data is available online. I am especially inspired by the contribution that LiDAR makes to the scientific community, combining physics with atmospheric and earth science, courses I would like my own studies to follow. DEPARTMENT offers the depth and range that accommodates my own academic objectives. From PROFESSOR’s many papers and publications to the many research opportunities that university offers, I am excited by the prospect of engaging in theoretical and practical applications of geography and meteorology. Furthermore, I have found professors in the Physics and Chemistry departments whose work is relevant to the atmosphere and who I am also inspired by. Confucius once said “Choose a job you love, and you never have to work a day in your life”. My LiDAR system is less of a choice than an acceptance of who I am and what I love.
Do you believe in Witches? Back in the 1600’s they started to think that people were witches. I am not sure why, but they did specific tests to see if you were a witch. The Weather Underground Organization or the WUO was an organization of American radicals. The WUO was often called the Weather Underground or the Weathermen. The fossil fuel we burn for energy coal, natural gas, and oil plus the loss of forests due to disforestation, in the southern hemisphere are all contributors for climate change. In the past three decades, every single year was warmer then the previous year and the warmest 12 years were recorded since 1998. We are overloading our atmosphere with carbon dioxide and trapping the heat and recently, the carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere reached 400 pmm. Not just environmental issues are rising due to carbon dioxide increase but more and miscellaneous issues are appearing as climate change becomes more severe. Climate change, or global warming, is a major issue affecting many species around the globe. Climate change can be caused by burning fossil fuels, breeding cattle that create methane, cutting down forests which absorb carbon dioxide, and the extra carbon dioxide in the atmosphere trapping the sunlight. These factors warm up the earth, and in the past century the earth has warmed by an average of about 1°. This doesn’t sound like much however on a global scale it’s huge and scientists predict a rise of up to 6°C in this century if greenhouse gasses are not cut drastically. Climate change is not just about the arctic sea ice melting, there are many other implications such as, severe storms, floods, and droughts; the sea becoming more acidic; rainforests dying, and drastic rise in sea levels. There are current strategies in place which are tackling climate change in general such as renewable energy and low carbon transport however there are also management strategies that are specific to species directly affected by climate change. When considering the species affected, many will think of the obvious species such as the polar bear and species living in cold habitats with snow and ice. This essay will address the impacts of climate change on an obvious species, the snow leopard, and a not so obvious species, sea turtles, and evaluate whether the current management of these species will be adequate to protect them in the future. It will also discuss alternative or additional management options that might help these species persist under a changing climate.
Over the course of recent history, much concern has been raised over the industrial revolution and the potential climate changes that it might be causing. It has been stated by global warming theorist that C02 emissions caused by human technologies are causing the world to warm, which will cause negative climate changes. The Earth may be experiencing a global warming trend and climate change; however, the process of climate change is outside of human control because human activity can barely account for any of the C02 level increases. Attempts to reduce human C02 emissions is needlessly expensive, and will have a negligible role in preventing or slowing any climatic changes such as global warming or an impending ice age. People must be prepared to adapt to the climatic changes that occur, because it is unlikely that human intervention will postpone them or limit the impact of their arrival.

For nearly ten years, Miami has not seen hurricane landfall. This fact may be troubling to those who are inclined to believe, whether through superstition or scientific knowledge, that one is bound to occur anytime now It may be pleasing news for those who have not had to suffer the destruction of these weather-beasts in ten years. Nostalgia, however, is my overwhelming reaction to the topic of hurricanes. I am taken back to candle-lit evenings tinged a mixture two parts electric fear one part mystic coziness.
Recently, I have graduated Berks Catholic High School and prepared to take a first step for my future career. I have always had a strong interest in Science field, especially in Biology and Chemistry. This is related to one of the gifts I have; a curiosity.

With solid background training, active practice and enthusiasm for atmospheric sciences, I am now ready to embark upon my graduate journey. I am particularly drawn to the Ph.D. program of the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, UCLA because of its special strength in theories of dynamics and simulation of the climate. And the innovative research topics, especially Dr. Hall’s research on climate feedbacks and regional climate dynamics, and Dr. Neelin’s application of hierarchical climate modeling, are really tempting. It is irresistible for me to continue my involvement in innovative research in atmospheric sciences, and I wish to begin focused research projects at graduate level as a further step toward my dream.
When people think of the memories they have of their childhood in school they tend to think of whether they felt safe, trusted a teacher, or desired to learn. If they think of these things than they more than likely went to a school that had a positive climate that helps children develop and come to learn. If they think of the opposite than they grew up in a school that had a negative climate. Although people think it does not matter whether the school has a positive or negative climate that is not the case, kids need the positive climate to learn at school.
Climate change refers to a change in global or regional climate patterns. Scientists agree that climate change is already beginning to transform life on Earth. The recent rise in global temperatures has brought changes in the weather and the climate. Many places globally have seen changes in rainfall and weather patterns. We may not like it but climate change is one of the most important issues that have effects in many parts in our daily lives. If climate change isn’t slowed down it will have a significant impact on global temperature, sea levels, human diseases, and wildlife.
A tropical cyclone is a warm-core, low-pressure system producing high winds that spiral counter-clockwise (in the northern hemisphere) and inward, with the highest winds near the center of circulation. The large counter-clockwise and inward flow is characteristic of the nearly symmetric structure of tropical cyclones as they are comprised of rain bands spiraling toward the center. These warm-core storms typically form over the tropical and subtropical oceans and extract their energy from the heat content of the oceans.
