Mental health is an integral part of our overall health and daily to day activities. According to WHO (World Health Organization), mental health is "a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community". on the contrary, one may experience a significant distress, disability and psychological dysfunction unable to function daily routine activities when mental illness or mental disorder is imminent. although mental disorders have been associated with the the impact on one’s health and wellbeing, it is also have a considerable economic burden when assessed in terms of unemployment …show more content…
Eisenstark, Lam, McDermott, Quanbeck, Scott and Sokolov (2007) reported that twenty five percent of mental health nurses working in public sector hospitals take the major risk in violent attacks from patients resulting a series injury: the prevalence rate being as high as three times that of any vocational group (Del Bel,2003).this number implies that nurses physical as well as emotional health is being compromised largely each day (Lanza, 1992). Another study done from five mental health inpatient units over a period of seven months, indicated that seventy-eight percent of violent incidences came from nurses (Jones, Owen, Tarantello, and Tennant,1998).Nurses are not the only ones being challenged by violence. A study done by Albert Banerjee et.al (2008) in long term care facilities, a shocking number of personal support workers have been a victim of workplace violence. Almost half (43%) of support workers reported they experience violence in everyday work activities. 16.8% of registered nurses and one quarter (24.6%) of licensed practical nurses, registered practical nurses, and registered nursing assistants experience violence on a daily basis. In 2000, social service workers incidence injuries also rose by 9.3 from work related assaults and injuries. As significant as this numbers could be, the numbers could go higher if those underreported cases are reflected that’s comes with the employees belief, “reporting won’t change
Therefore, this position statement is relevant because these abuses can be seen in day-to-day healthcare environment. The effects of violence in nursing can be harmful to the proper function within a workplace. It can be damaging to the nursing profession and patient care. According to (Johnston et al., 2010, p.36), workplace violence is “spreading like a ‘superbug.’” Studies have shown, that lateral violence, nurse-on-nurse, has been one of the highest incidence of violence within the workplace. Also, statistics have shown that lateral violence has one of the most emotional impacts on an individual. This will be further discussed below. For these reasons, it is important for healthcare workers to validate the detrimental effects violence can have in the workplace, and be prepared to combat and prevent workplace violence.
It is crucial for the nursing profession to address violence to improve retention and recruitment of nurses. Horizontal violence behaviors are not conducive to a culture of safety, which is what healthcare should be all about. Nursing Managers, Hospitals and different organizations must have a “zero tolerance” policy for these behaviors and a protection policy for the nurses reporting the situations. Only we as nurses and other health care personnel have the capacity to eliminate horizontal violence and fulfill our commitment to our patients, families and communities in a safe environment.
As a child, I have always sought to help others either by helping the elderly, listening to a friend in need or simple giving advice based on my own experiences. But, although this is a passion of mine, I do not currently possess the educational experience nor the tools necessary to be an effective counselor. During my high school years, I lived in a predominantly white neighborhood in Belleville, Illinois and with that came many challenges as well as stereotypes that affected not only myself but other students. Many of the people as well as the police were very prejudice toward minorities within the community. I witnessed burning crosses, often stopped by police or other authorities for simply
Nurses encounter various challenges in the workplace. One of the most alarming trends is that they often become the victims of physical violence. It should be kept in mind that healthcare settings account for about 60 percent of all violent assaults that occur in various American workplaces (Gates, Gillespie, & Succop, 2011, p. 59). Additionally, more than 50 percent of nurses report that they suffered from physical abuse, at least once (Gates et al., 2011, p. 60). In turn, this tendency makes nurses even more vulnerable to the effects of stress. Moreover, they are likely to feel dissatisfied with their jobs. This paper is aimed at reviewing the scholarly articles that can illustrate the origins of this problem and its impacts on the experiences
A majority of us want to live in a safe place that is clean and attractive. A lot of us also need to be around people that we care about and they care about us too. People tend to underestimate how important health is and that includes mental, physical and spiritual well being. El Paso County is located in the south eastern part of Colorado and is about 61 miles away from Denver the capital of Colorado. El Paso County sits at 6,035 feet which sits over one mile above sea level, though some areas of the city are significantly higher. El Paso is also near one of the famous fourteeners of America, Pikes Peak. (Source: http://www.medicinenet.com) Mental health is when the mind is in positive role. Mental health is just as important as physical health in a person’s life. Mental health is critical to a person’s well-being, their ability to live a productive life and to keep a healthy family and interpersonal relationships. Mental health does not just affect the mind it also affects people’s physical health. Some physical health diseases can cause a mental health disorder and vice versa. Mental health disorders are associated with the occurrence, development, and outcome of some of the today’s most chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. When people go untreated from a mental health disorder are at a higher risk for many unhealthy behaviors such as alcohol and drug use, violent behavior, and suicide.

In the United States, one in every four people has some kind of serious mental illness, which is about 61.5 million people.1 Suicide is the tenth leading cause of life loss, and 90% of suicides are related to mental illness.2 In addition, in the case of mass shootings, 60% of shooters suffer from some kind of psychosis.3 It is a matter of concern that, according to the 2012 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 60% of people suffering from mental illness were untreated.1 While more effort, more manpower and more money should be invested, the budget for mental health accounts only 5.6 percent of national health care spending.4
An Emergency Nurses Association study found that, “every week between eight to thirteen percent of emergency department nurses are victims of physical violence” (Trossman, 2010, p. 6). The physical repercussions of violence can include a physical injury, anger, chronic pain, loss of sleep, disability, muscle tension, anxiety, irritability, and nightmares (Gates, Gillespie, & Succop, 2011, p. 60). The reasons and risk factors for these violent encounters are varied and create a lengthy list. Low staff, lack of visitor policies, diagnosis of dementia and Alzheimer’s patients, misperceptions of staff behaviors, lack of training in aggressive behavior, care of psychiatric patients, and release of mental ill patients without proper follow up are all potential factors that may cause workplace violence (Stokowski, 2010). Many times hospitals do not respond to incidences; almost half of the fifteen percent of nurses who have reported physical violence with a physical injury result in no action taken against the offender (Trossman, 2010, p.

Workplace aggression and violence is an issue that has been receiving more attention in the media recently. According to Neuman and Baron (1998), workplace violence is behaviours of workplace aggression involving physical assaults of harming others at work. In the healthcare industry, statements have indicated that healthcare providers have faced the highest number of Type 2 violence in which the perpetrators are patients and visitors who directed physical violence against workers (Phillips, 2016). It has become a growing problem in the healthcare industry for healthcare providers such as nurses to worries about their safety at work according to Cipirano, the 35th president of American Nurses Association (2015, Sept 4). In hope to ensure healthcare

I had never had this type of training before, so I was immediately interested in learning about workplace violence. With this training, I was able to learn about the different types of workplace violence and use critical thinking skills for scenarios on how to de-escalate inappropriate or violent situations. After we completed this training, my nursing class had to post in our online discussion forum about our own personal experiences with workplace violence, what we learned from the required educational course, and what we would have done differently after receiving the training. While I was thinking of what to put down for my own experience for the discussion post, I realized how significant workplace violence is, especially in the health care setting. I knew I have been involved personally at work or during clinical with aggressive, agitated, or violent patients, but I did not associate it with the term ‘workplace violence’. Like many nurses today, workplace violence is unfortunately viewed as part of the job. After I received this training and learned about how prevalent workplace violence is, I knew I wanted to elaborate on it and do more research in order to bring light to a serious issue that has not had the recognition it
