It is natural as human to want to remember important people or events from our past that changed, influenced or affected us. “According to psychologists, memorials help survivors to come out of the emotional shock in a fruitful manner. Memorials also serve as a permanent record for future generations and genealogy. Memorials allow family, friends and the community to know about their past generation.” (Corablef) What is important to keep in mind when trying to honor someone or something, is what factors are most important to keep in mind to give you your wanted outcome. Some of the most important factors to keep in mind while creating a monument or memorial is the location, design and legitimacy.

The design needs to fit the importance of the event of person being memorialized. If it’s a local hero that is being honored and remembered, a statue dedicated to their life if appropriate. If it is a tremendous tragedy that occurred in our history, though, such as the holocaust it is appropriate to create a monument big enough for the nation to come and visit to pay respects to the millions of people who died. However, the design needs to be sure to stay centered around the real meaning of the memorial. While a monument needs to reflect the importance of the person or event, if it is too big or grand it can take away from the real meaning of building it; to honor the memory of the topic. “The members of the commission felt the massive building would overcome The Mall and take away the main purpose of the museum, which was meant to be a place of remembrance and not to overpower The Mall or its visitors.” Source E (Musser). A designer of the Lincoln Memorial, Henry Bacon, said “I designed the memorial after the Greek Temple known as the Parthenon with the idea that a memorial to the man who defended democracy should be modeled after a structure from the birthplace of democracy.” Clearly, design is a major factor in creating a monument.
