‘Christian Only Can Be the Meek’ Danker defined that meekness is “to not being overly impressed by a sense of one’s self-importance.” This definition presents two things that meekness is not. Meekness is not selfishness and overemphasis of oneself. On the other hand, Pipa argued what meekness is; he said that meekness is “the attitude that humbles oneself under God’s Word and before one’s neighbor.” According to these definitions, meekness is not selfishness but humility towards God and others.
‘Precondition of Meekness’
Wilhelmus à Brakel, in the section of ‘The Subject and Object of Meekness,’ starts “Meekness is a virtue which is to be found in believers only.” The sentence literally signifies that it is unable to have meekness for a unbeliever but a believer only. The reason why only Christian can to be meek is that he is not only saved by believing God through Christ, but because the Spirit of God dwells in him also. The Apostle Paul in Romans 8 systematically taught the doctrine of Sanctification based upon the doctrine of Union with Christ. In verse 3, Paul explains that Christ the Son of God came into the flesh of man to fulfill the righteous law of God instead of man. Paul continually articulates that the purpose of the redemptive work of Christ; “in order that … walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit” (verse 4). Paul finally teaches that Christians who are saved by the work of Christ will “set their mind on the things of the Spirit” (verse 5), and it will be “life and peace” (verse 6) because to walk according to the Spirit means what they submit to the law of God with pleasing Him (verse 7 &
