Every year, thousands of children are diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition. Children who are diagnosed have to battle through the hardships of these conditions and face the risk of losing their life because of these conditions day by day. Some examples of life-threatening medical conditions would include leukemia, congenital heart condition, degenerative lung condition, brain tumor, immune system disorder, and more. Make-A-Wish was established in 1980. It all began with the story of Christopher James Greicius’s wish. During a stakeout, U.S. Customs Agent Tommy Austin tells a story to Arizona Officer Ron Cox about his wife’s friend Linda who has a son that is most likely going to die of Leukemia. Chris who was 7 years old wanted to be a police officer and wanted to catch bad guys with Austin. Austin talks to Cox and asks if Department of Public Safety can do something to make Chris’s wish come true. Cox then went to the DPS spokesman who talked to the director about making Chris’ wish happen. DPS Director Milstead gave Schmidt permission to make Chris’ wish come true. Officers then began working together to have Chris experience the life of a police officer such as riding in a patrol car, flying in a DPS helicopter, and getting a tour of the department. Chris was also given a “Smokey Bear” hat and one of Lt. Col. Dick Schaefer’s old badge. Chris became Arizona’s only honorary and first Department of Safety officer. Everyone who met Chris saw him glowing and wanted to help. Everyone knew they didn’t have much time. Cox and Eaves ordered a DPS uniform in Chris’ size and workers worked all night to have everything read the next day. Kids who are diagnosed with a serious medical condition have to go through many obstacles and struggles. It can be emotionally and physically tiring. This is why putting hope and joy back into these kids’ lives are important. The foundation has a vision of making the wish of every child who is eligible come true, every year. They are halfway there in making this vision happen. With the help of more and more people, they hope to achieve their mission in granting the wish of every child involved with the foundation. According to wish.org, “Now, in 2013, more than 226,000 children in the United States have benefited from the hope, strength, and joy of experiencing their one heartfelt wish. And while it’s not the beginning, it’s nowhere near the end.” Make-A-Wish will continue to grow and expand to try and make every wish happen.
