Macbeth did some truly awful things. He murdered Duncan, had Banquo and Macduff’s family murdered. He also lied to and deceived multiple people. Was Macbeth always evil? It is arguable that Macbeth becomes evil over time by being swayed by people to commit atrocities Does murdering someone make Macbeth evil? To truly answer these questions, the concept of evil must be defined.

What does it mean to be evil? An evil person has a corrupt moral compass; He is able to kill to gain what he desires; he can lie on whim. Evil people are willing to go to extremes to accomplish their goals. They are not influenced by other people and do awful things on their own. After all, Macbeth decides to murder Duncan and he succeeds. Now he is willing to kill to get what he wants. Macbeth proves this b later deciding to have Banquo and Macduff’s entire family slaughtered. No one influences him to have them murder, it is a decision he makes on his own. By that point Macbeth is also a deceitful person.

After having killed Duncan Macbeth needed to draw suspicion away from himself. When it is found out that Duncan was dead, Macbeth acts as if he has no idea what has happened. In actuality, he is using this moment to deceive the people present into thinking that he is grieving the king’s death:
Macbeth
Had I but died an hour before this chance,
I had lived a blessèd time, for from this instant
There’s nothing serious in mortality.
All is but toys. Renown and grace is dead.
The wine of life is drawn, and the mere lees
Is left this vault to brag
