Being a college student is not easy. One of the best things about being a student is, being able to build a relationship with the faculty and staff. The faculties at any college, university or even institution are important. There are times when a faculty can be competitive because they want their school to be the very best. Without faculty who work in these higher education schools, these places would run itself. That means the school shuts down and the students leave. The faculty and students are what shape our schools. I believe that when the faculty communicates more with the students, they can connect and get to know them better. Adam Duberstein explains, “when students feel connected to the campus community, they are more often retained and excel academically, creating a winning situation for everyone” (n.d., para.2). Not having the right amount of communication can make things tough. While a percentage of universities, colleges and institutes have great social skills, you would assume it was like that at every clinic. A lack of communication throws everything off. This should be enough for the faculty and staff to open their eyes. There are quite a few hard workers out there, but when the faculty and staff don’t communicate well, it puts a barrier up between the student and staff. I believe it is the faculty and staff’s responsibility to help the students become more successful by working with them. The professors and instructors teach, but there are staff members who keep are not fully focused on the student the way they should be. As a current student in high school, it is very easy to see these issues in the education system. Each day I walk the halls beside exhausted zombies who debate whether they should use their lunch periods to get math help in the library or sacrifice a club so they could read a chapter of anatomy that is not even relative to what they talk about in class. Due to the ever-increasing competition and subsequent elevation in performance standards, kids’ academic and emotional prosperity is only going to get worse. When I am an adult and have children, there is nothing more that I would love to see in their long drives through high school than an improvement in the education system, so that they would not have to struggle through school my peers and I did.
Two professors of different backgrounds, Mike Rose of California, and Gerald Graff, of Illinois, discuss the problems college students face today in America. Though similar in slight variations, both professors view the problem in different regards and prepare solutions that solve what they feel to be the heart of this academic problem.
The conflict on how students should be taught and how well is addressed in the book, College: What It Was, Is, And Should Be by Andrew Delbanco. The book addresses what college is for, describes the origins of colleges, and explains who goes and who does not. Colleges started with a religious aspect and have formed the foundation of contemporary, liberal education. Colleges are also meant to help an individual understand what inspires them and understand the social implications of ideas. Delbanco says that learning should bring to bear in a situation where students have to respect, consult and aid each other. The school has a pretty good relationship with the students, yes they have a lot of problems, but most of the faculty is like parents of these students, like where Brandi took In Marcus to her home, I see that as a parent, someone who is a caretaker of a child.The faculty in this school pushes their students to do their best. These teachers and other faculty members try anything possible to help their students pass each year.They really do have a good relationship from what I have seen anyways.
At the start of the semester, my oblivious state of nature associating with the Chinese culture reached an unacceptable level. Implementing a necessary change, I decided to educate myself on different cultures starting with China. I failed to ponder that such a rich, deep culture existed outside America. Encompassed by this country’s unique yet suffocating melting pot culture, my outlook believed ideas such as uniformity between American Chinese food and Authentic Chinese food. After this course, my bigot perspective widened as I witnessed diversity in the world. Before this class, when I thought of Chinese food, my connotation jumped to thoughts associated with chop suey, but as I progressed my education, my mindset gradually pondered foods like steamed buns or “New Year Cakes” with authentic Chinese food.
It seems as though the majority of college students these days aren’t looking to further their education because it’s what they really want, they do it to please their parents, to be accepted by society, or because there’s nothing else for them to do (Bird, 372). These expectations have led to students being unhappy and stressed, and have pushed them into a school or a job that they don’t particularly care for.
The American Education system needs to check their purpose and refocus students back on the reason for furthering their education. Although, many colleges are known for many amenities and student activities, college students need to focus on the issues at hand and conquer them with knowledge and compassion for humankind. Americans need to realize that student debt is a national crisis, and the best way to make a change is be involved and responsible for every cost during your education career. There are vast communication differences between males and females, which makes it difficult for the two sexes to maintain stable and functional relationships with each other. Areas in which these problems occur include children’s development, friendships, romantic relationships, and work environments. If these communication problems continue to persist in heterosexual relationships, our nations heterosexual divorce rates may rise well over 50% in the next few decades.
This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the time restraints are not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free moments I have. Strangely enough, I?ve found the college English experience to be much more rewarding and enjoyable than in high school.
In today’s society, Technology is the main player in the way we communicate. Cell phones and social media made the communication easier for people to contact each other. It extends time less to connect between long distance friends. Also, it helps people to spread and enlarge circle of friendships around the world. However, people are losing the way of face-to-face conversation. Sherry Turkle is an expert on culture and therapy, mobile technology, social networking, and sociable robotics argued in her article “the flight from conversation” how using technology can affect our behavior in conversation.
Most people see teachers and professors in the same light. They perform similar tasks. They teach. However, they are separated by a fine line of distinction. High school teachers help a student build a foundation of knowledge, and train the student to focus on learning. College professors help to shape and define a student’s foundation of knowledge, and challenge the student to cultivate the mind. High school teachers and college professors have similar goals and guidelines, but they take a differing approach to achieving the end result. The way the class is conducted, academic expectations, and view of student responsibility are a few of the contrasts between high school teachers and college professors.
I graduated from butte college in 1997 with an AS degree in Licensed vocational nursing. I later decided to further my education in nursing and returned to college, I graduated with an AS degree in Registered nursing in 2002 from butte college. I am currently attending Pacific college to earn my BSN degree. Right after I obtained my LVN license I went to worked at Oroville hospital, I worked for Oroville hospital for one year, then I decided to make a change and I went to work for California Forensic Medical Group which is a subcontracted company for the Butte County jail and I have been there ever since. I am married and have 4 boys and 2 dogs. In my spare time I love to ride my Harley.
Effective communication is critical within the criminal justice setting. No records system can be effective without clearly communicating policies, directives, and procedures. Nor can an officer carry out a mission or survive without clear communications. Because communication involves the exchange of information between people (Wallace & Roberson, 2009) it is important to consider how people may perceive what is said or written in different situations. In this paper I will discuss the criminal justice setting, how they utilizes formal and informal channels of communication along with the use of verbal, non-verbal, communication. I will discuss the different barriers of communication, the difference of hearing and listening and how to overcome the barriers of communication in the criminal justice setting.
