Recommended: Characteristics of language
Language is an important tool for people to express their thought and emotion through communication. When a language is being used there are some variables that will affect a person in his/her way to talk such as gender, age, social class and geographical region etc. Lakoff (1973) claimed that women make more precise discriminations in naming colors than men do. Colors like lavender, beige, aquamarine, and so on, women can state more clearly than men do. Put simplistically; in color vocabulary women can distinguish different color precisely and narrowly. This is because women and men do not speak in the same way even they experience the same thing. In every speech community women and men speak differently in social and cultural reason. (Holmes, 2013) Gender differences affect the way of people speak and this paper is to discuss the features of woman’s language in Korean language. More specifically, it mainly focuses on how Korean women speak in daily life through the use of unique features in Korean.
In South Korea, people were influenced deeply by Confucianism once introduced in Joseon Dynasty. “Confucianism is reflected not only in the way Koreans think and behave but also in the way the Korean language works in terms of both vocabulary and grammar.” (Song, 2005) Under the influence of Confucianism, men are superior to women in terms of social status and women are subservient to men. In the male-dominant society women prefer to use overtly prestigious forms and men prefer to use vernacular form in order to distinguish the social status between women and men in Joseon Dynasty. Although Confucianism has less influence in today’s South Korea society, we still can find some features when women talk. “Some forms and expression are m...

To conclude, Korean women tend to use tag question, indirect words and expressions, and negative expression to avoid being conclusive and try to avoid being the dominant of the whole conversation and show the concern about the feeling of addressee. To a small extent, these features of woman’s language in Korean seem to regard as a polite strategy of conversation but features like the use of honorifics are just a deference of grammatical or lexical forms. Although Korean women tend to use tag question, indirect words and expressions and negative expression, it does not mean that they do not use vernacular forms. Therefore, we still are not sure whether Korean women is really use less vulgar forms and more polite than Korean men. Undoubtedly, more research on women’s language in Korean need to be conducted for further understanding it.
(1800)Topic 2: A Literary Analysis of the Historical Differentiation of Patriarchal Culture and Female Gender Identity in the Memoirs of Lady Hyegyong and the Tale of Genji
Men and women are not made equal. At least this is what Deborah Tannen believes in her article “How Male and Female Students Use Language Differently.” Tannen is a professor at Georgetown University, and is often highly revered for her work in linguistics. The article is meant to show the differences in communication learned at an early age by boys and girls. However, in the article, Tannen shows lack of direction with thought and evidence that should be apparent in the work of someone on the collegiate level.
Tan was born to a pair of Chinese immigrants. Her mother understood English extremely well, but the English she spoke was “broken.”(36) Many people not familiar with her way of speaking found it very difficult to understand her. As a result of this, Tan would have to pretend to be her mother, and she called people up to yell at them while her mother stood behind her and prompted her. This caused Tan to be ashamed of her mother throughout her youth, but as she grew, she realized that the language she shares with her mother is a “language of intimacy” (36) that she even uses when speaking with her husband.
Language and Masculinity The art of communication was always dominated by the innovations happened in the art of language. The human race has always been communicating among itself and formed various societies, developed relationships, brought new ideas etc. Language was utilized to define the sexuality, the culture, the social aspect and it all happened in terms of gender. The dominance of the masculine gender through the utilization of the language was always known to the mankind. The male population receives power by dictating certain social norms. The masculinity is a part of the male gender and in terms of linguistics it conveys masculinity with great power and force. According to some philosophers the males unjustly and deliberately construct such a society which is male-centered and it caters to the supremacy of the masculinity described above. It will be interesting to find the relation among language, masculinity and gender. If we discuss it any further we will find out that throughout the history it was the human race which has brought innovation to the language. Language was used to gain power with the use of male power. As a result the language was also used to dictate social norms. They also became successful in gaining the women’s cooperation by using the power of masculine language. Some of the scholars assume that language is visible and it exists in this form without any doubt. They also further assume that language can be compared with other forms of visual phenomenon. In this regard the linguistic analysis is in fact a kind of perception of visual way. In other way one can see the language and in particular in its treatment of grammar. “In "Language and Masculinity," Victor Seidler writes, "Oppressed peopl...
In drawing an overall conclusion we have found that language itself is not sexist, but has been used by a male dominated society to oppress and denigrate females. Slowly but surely through a wave of feminist movements, this fact is being recognized. Steps are being taken to try and correct this and to give females a chance at being equal and not second class citizens. The more I became engrossed in this assignment the more I realized (being female) that we are being belittled by men’s use of language. It is true that many women apologize for their existence when conversing in general but more especially when interacting with men. This appears to be due to a general feeling of inferiority or lack of confidence. When society itself institutionalizes such attitudes, the language reflects the bias. When everyone in society is truly created equal and treated as such there will be little concern for the asymmetries that exist in the language.
North Korea had a lot of natural resources and a source for hydroelectric power along with South Korea and its agricultural breadbasket. Russians were expanding and keeping a close eyes on Korea’s natural resources. The Soviet Union considered the Korean peninsula and Manchuria to be very important for their own benefit but japan worried that Russia would expand into Korea. Korea wasnt a fan of Japan by World War II. They were mostly pro-Soviet. Korea borrowed from developments in Russia and became Communist
I was the “funny guy” in my clique of high school friends. Ever since I learned to read English, I enjoyed reading and collecting joke books. I exhausted every single joke book from the small community library in town. Riddles, jokes about animals and wildlife, reasons why I didn’t do my homework, lawyer jokes, and later on, ethnic jokes. I knew they were funny, but I wanted more. Perhaps it was my lack of physical achievements that made me obsess with a need to entertain my peers.
According to the National Priorities Project, 598.5 Billion dollars is spent on war, military assistance, nuclear spending every year. For some of those reasons on why so much money is spent is North Korea and its threats to the US, the continuing war in Afghanistan, and the impact of the recent reforms in illegal immigration. North Korean and American tensions continue to rise higher and higher and we approach a possible nuclear war. Further, the issue of the war and Afghanistan seems to be escalating as more US soldiers are sent in, and the reforms on illegal immigration seem to have not broken the determination of the trespassers.

In 1981, an American family adopted my sister and me. At five years old, I was thrown into a strange new world with scary customs and weird looking people. My parents did what they could to acclimatize me to this new culture but to this day, I feel as though a part me is still missing. Eating my native Korean food satisfies a need that I have no words to describe but leaves me feeling as if a part of me becomes whole again even if it is just for an instant. I don’t remember much of my previous life before adoption , but each time I am exposed to my native culture validates that my personality and outlook on life is who I was born to be.
In contemporary Japanese, we have distinct difference in how each gender talk. This is constructed in the system of Japanese. Yet, people do not recognize the social differences among gender. This trait must have a historical reasoning behind systematic society. This research tries to study the gender difference in the contemporary Japanese, as well as the history of how the sexist language developed in the society.
The initial germinations of the Language and gender field began in 1922 with Otto Jespersen, who was a grammarian and a proponent of 'Deficit Theory' although the actual term 'Deficit Theory' was retrospectively applied to Jespersen's conclusions. In Jespersen's work he concluded the male language to be the normative and other variants such as women's, children’s and foreigner’s speech to be inferior and consequently deficient in comparison with male speech. Jespersen’s theories may seem politically incorrect and sexist within the modern moral universe but we must read him with an understanding of the context of the time. In 1922, women still played a subordinate role in society compared to that of men, male superiority was a common and accepted idea; Jespersen was expressing the status quo. In regard to this, it is my view that we should view Jespersen's work without prejudice and judge him with logic and reason. If we are earnestly committed in our search for truth, we cannot let ethics cloud or distort our findings, it would wrong to invest in the sciences but then disre...

Language is crucial to young children’s development; it is essential for learning and communicating with others. Children learn most effectively through being involved in rich experiences and practical activities promoted through play, and adults need to join this play talking with and listening to them. There have been several theories about how young children acquire language. Some argued that the environment is an important factor, while others state that language is innate and that environment has a minor role in shaping knowledge.
