Kevin Durant was born just outside of the nation's capital in Suitland, Maryland, on September 29, 1988. He was one of four children of Wanda and Wayne Pratt. (“Kevin Durant Bio.com”) Durant grew up loving sports with his sister, Brianna, and two brothers, Anthony (also a basketball player) and Rayvonne. Barbara, his grandmother was present during his childhood and she was very influential. She continuously mentioned that Durant’s height was a blessing, Even though schoolmates teased him for always being the tallest in class. (“Kevin Durant entire MVP awards speech”). Yet, someone recognized the abilities of Kevin and believed that he had a fulfilling future by becoming a basketball player. Charles Craig a coach approached Kevin suggesting that he would financially help Kevin if he joined the AAU team (“Kevin Durant”). Being on the court, Craig always wore the number 35, when he was scrimmaging with his team. Kevin played at a gym called Seat Pleasant; here he spent most of his life practicing. He religiously practiced and continued to build on his physical strength and didn’t let himself down or his coach. As a Longhorn, Durant started in every game during his freshman year of college, averaging 25.8 points per game (first in the Big 12, fourth in the nation) and 11 rebounds per game in 35 games. He scored 20-plus points 30 times, and put up 30-plus points 11 times (“Kevin Durant”). He was named the Big 12 Tournament's Most Valuable Player after hitting a tournament record of 92 points and leading the Longhorns to the second round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Basketball Championship. After playing two years of high school basketball at a National Christian Academy and a year at Oak Hill, Kevin proved his talent. At the age of 16 he was offered a contract with Nike and a basketball scholarship to Longhorn University (“Kevin Durant”). He played basketball for 2 years, winning 1 out of the 2 championships during his time there.
