There is a well know metaphorical phrase that goes, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” This phrase conveys the idea of not to jump to conclusions about someone and make assumptions about them simply by their appearance because there is much more to that person. In the play Inherit the Wind by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, the characters are introduced to be perceived in a certain way and it seems as though the characters personality traits are evident. However, this is not the case as one of the themes of the play is that one must look beyond the surface of things to seek the truth because things are not always what they seem to be. Characters conveyed this theme throughout the play. Bertram Cates is described as a modest and quiet man who did not expect to cause a huge controversy on the topic of teaching Darwins Theory of Evolution to his …show more content…
students. Towards the end of the trial, Cates does not feel safe and thinks that he is not going to win the case. Rachel’s character did not have a mind of her own.
Her father tells her what to think and she cannot think freely. Rachel’s father takes over her thoughts and words, which restricts her ability to have her own opinions. Towards the end of the play, Rachel learns to have her own thoughts and reveals to Drummond why she really could not have thoughts of her own when she says, “You see, I haven’t really thought very much. I was always afraid of what I might think—so it seemed safer not to think at all.”(pg.124) The trial and Drummond’s speech gave her an opportunity to be able to have thoughts of her own. She reads Darwin’s Theory of Evolution and admits to not understanding it but understanding the two sides of the trial and the whole aspect of it when she says, “I’ve read it. All the way through. I don’t understand it. What I do understand, I don’t like. I don’t want to think that men come from apes and monkeys. But I think that’s beside the point.”(pg.124) Rachel comes off as silent and ignorant at the beginning of the play due to how her father had treated her but she progresses through the play to become a
better person with an open mind who values everyone’s ideas. In the beginning of the play Inherit the Wind , Brady’s character is revealed to be a confident and striking man who is loved and praised by the townspeople of Hillsboro. Hillsboro looks at Brady as a bold man and they give him the title of Colonel for no reason. Brady believes that his interpretation on the Bible is the only right way to live. During the trial, Brady fights for what he believes in but is made a fool of and falls apart on the stand when Drummond gives his speech explaining how the Bible isn’t meant to be taken literally giving examples such as Jonah and the whale, the sun standing still and Mrs. Cain. The townspeople turn against Brady realizing that Drummond is right and this upsets Brady, which is shown in the stage directions, “There is some applause. The sound of it strikes Brady exactly as if he had been slapped in the face.”(pg.94) Shortly after this scene, the townspeople support Drummond and Brady feels humiliated.
Emily’s act was splendid, and she never talked during her performances. Her actions were funny enough to intrigue the little children watching her perform. Oddly, the children enjoyed seeing an adult clown being outwitted by Belgan and Edward C., two dwarfed men that appeared to be the size of children. Each day, Emily worked strenuously, far exceeding the job description of a clown. Constantly mingling with the crowds, and giving continuous efforts to win laughs, Emily is a great asset to the carnival’s prosperity.
He wanted the students to have the knowledge and know different ideas about evolution. "All it says is that man wasn't just here" but another perspective that "living comes from a long miracle." Cates wanted to educate his students to know that life was not made in seven days but evolution happened, and it takes millions of years for life to evolve on earth. He also wanted the students to know Darwin's theory of evolution and not be on the dark side just believing that God just stuck man on the earth. Cates was very courageous, as he was trying to gain the right to think for his students. He realized that the students immensely believed in their religion and, did not really think about how the man was originated scientifically. These reasons highlight my beliefs that Bertram Cates is a courageous and man teacher, fighting the odds and gaining the Hillsboro town's right to think.
Primarily, Bert Cates, a 10th grade teacher, struggles to obtain his right to have an open-mind, and encourages others to do so. The defendant, simply tries to teach a lesson in his Hunter’s Civic Biology, but while doing so is hastily over charged by the bigots of Hillsboro, Tennessee. As he explains himself to a fellow school teacher: “I did it because...I had the book in my hand...and read to my sophomore science class chapter 17, Darwin’s Origin of Species...All it says is that man wasn’t stuck here like a geranium in a flower pot; that living things come from a long miracle, it didn’t just happen in seven days”. It seems odd, or even bizarre that this premise is so hard to accept in Hillsboro. All in all, Cates is merely opening another aspect to the beginning of time.
Charles Darwin, the Father of Evolution, was a British scientist who laid the foundations of the theory of evolution, transforming the thinking of the entire world about the living things around us (Charles Darwin (1809 – 1882)). After working on his theory for nearly 20 years, he published On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection in 1859. As soon as the book was released, the controversy began with each sides gaining followers until the climax on July 10, 1925. The idea that animals could “evolve” and change into new species, including humans, was one that challenged not only how people thought about the natural world, but challenged the story of the creation from the Bible itself. Even though Darwin himself never said that humans “evolved” from apes, everyone took it as a logical extension of his new theory. It went against the idea of argument for design that had unified theology and science for decades (Moran 5). This new threat to Christianity and the social culture of the time was one that would transform state laws on their educational curriculum.
In various types of media, there would always be the underlying message that the creator was trying to convey. These messages established themes and were able to connect to people and reveal universal truths on human experiences. In literature, messages can be revealed in many ways such as through characters’ words and actions, through objects that act as symbols, through setting, or through irony. This was seen in the play Inherit the Wind, as many of the themes were able to reveal some of the truths that humans experience today through the words and actions of various characters, and through the objects introduced throughout the play.
Others may detect an evil trait in Abigail. I chose to watch Gone with the Wind for my epic movie. I really enjoyed the movie. Gone with the Wind is about a girl named Scarlett O'Hara is the daughter of an Irish immigrant who in 1861 owns a plantation named Tara in Georgia. Scarlett is infatuated with Ashley Wilkes, who, although attracted to her, marries his cousin, Melanie Hamilton. At the party announcing Ashley's engagement to Melanie, Scarlett meets Rhett Butler, who has a reputation as a rascal. As the Civil War begins, Scarlett accepts a proposal of marriage to a man who she does not love and later dies in war. After the war, Scarlett inherits Tara and manages to keep the place going. When desperate measures take place and Scarlett can’t get money to pay for Tara she marries a wealthy man who later dies attacking the men that assaulted her. After that Rhett confesses his love and they get married, but when things get rough and Scarlett’s true colors appear he packs up and leaves.
Introduction: 1. there will have a famous quote from Gone with the Wind at the beginning, which is
One particular criterion character effectively supports the central idea in “Rip Van Winkle” by Washington Irving. The character's type develops with the personality development throughout the story. Three types of characters: round, flat, and stock, appear in most stories. The round character displays a fully developed personality and full emotions. Flat characters, also known as supporting characters, do not develop fully or express complex emotions. A stock character, also known as a stereotype, fits an established characterization from real life or literature. With these three types of characters leading the reader through the story, the reader learns the events taking place as well as the changes in the character’s lives. The author keeps the reader informed of the changes affecting the characters throughout the narrative through style. When a character undergoes a fundamental change in nature or personality during the story, the character has dynamic style. However, a character without change defines a static character. Although all characters have a style and type sometimes understanding the differences appears complicated. A chart often helps establish a better understanding of character type and style.
The environment has always influenced mankind throughout the course of our history. The Ice Age engendered a mass extinction of the human population, forcing the early Homo Sapiens to migrate into suitable regions and drastically changing the livelihood of mankind in 70,000 BC (NPR). Likewise, the Dust Bowl, a period of severe dust storms that damaged the prairie lands of the Great Plain between 1934 and 1937, greatly influenced the livelihood of the American citizens in the 1930s. It mainly affected the states of Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico where 2.5 million people had moved out of these regions by 1940 (PBS), desperately searching for jobs which were already scarce during the period of the Great Depression. Regardless,
In the amazing story “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” the author tells his childhood tail. William Kamkwamba lives in a small country called Malawi. Williams family and friends make their living off of the land. Planting, selling, and harvesting everything they can. When planting season came along Williams country was struck with horrible rain which flooded the seed filled fields. Famine and disease struck his loved ones, friends, acquaintances and even his dog. Growing up Williams parents taught him about magic and witches. He was raised to believe in these things so science has been always a mystery to the boy, but as money grew scarce William was forced to drop out of school. He began taking trips to the library and found himself particularly interested in the subject science. Using what he had taught himself, he finds a way to help his family and potentially his own country. William Kamkwamba is determined, creative, and intelligent.
He had risked demolishing his reputation just so he can express his thoughts and beliefs. Stating your opinion to a town full of hard headed people who are not willing to change or progress takes courage. In the text it states “I had the book in my hand, Hunter’s Civic Biology. I opened it up and read my sophomore science class Chapter 17, Darwin’s Origin of Species” (8). This shows that Cates was unique and different among the people of Hillsboro. He believed in evolution opposed to the townspeople who accepted and understood creationism. Many people often embrace other people’s beliefs to fit in. To go against everyone’s acceptance and view is a very courageous thing to do. In life preserving individuality and standing out is crucial. Regularly, tension is confronted and the horror of becoming an outsider of society so people tend to cave in. Cates took action and dared himself to go against everyone’s beliefs. He explicitly set and presented his thoughts to his classroom. He has showed each and every person that he is not scared to fight for what he believes in and he is not going to
The lean start-up is a revolutionary new idea of doing business. It focuses more on customer satisfaction and feedback than a traditional business plan would, cutting down on fine-tuning a product that may or may not be well-received by the consumer. Lean businesses are able to cycle through several prototypes and receive customer feedback after each one, producing far less waste than would otherwise be the case. This strategy allows for better money-management practices, results in a better end-product, and creates statistically higher customer satisfaction. In the book The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer, Kamkwamba relates the story of how he creates a wind turbine in his backyard in Malawi, Africa. His willingness to change directions with his project and desire to create a “minimum viable
Food, Inc (2008). Food, Inc reveals the truth about how corporate controlled food company are poisoning us with harmful chemicals that boosted agribusiness financially, but endangered human health generally. It shows in its two segments, the abusive treatment to animals in meat production and the danger that is prevalent in production of corn. Basically we are leaning heavily on GMO goods which are produced for quantity rather than quality.
He could tell that she was pissed, and he honestly had no idea why. So what if she broke a nail because he accidently kicked the ball at her, she dodged it, did she?! And so what if she fell into the mud later on, because of her dam seven inch high heels she wore that day, and then was covered in the dirty mud, ruining her outfit? She has plenty more of the same outfit, for God's sake, just a little lighter than the latter one! Oh, and who cares if her hair is a mess because she came outside and it was windy, how is it his fault? He can't control weather, ya know!
