Infant Observation
While having breakfast at a local coffee shop, I was presented with the opportunity to casually observe a child somewhere between 5 and 6 months. Rachel is a very active, happy, giggling little girl. She was sitting at a table with her mother, and another man similar height to mom. I am not sure if this was a relative or a family friend. Rachel was “propped up” on the bench next to mom using a pillow (I think they are called “boppy” pillows) and had two or three brightly colored fabric animal toys. I was sitting three tables apart from the baby and its mother, and there were five other people at the tables around the baby girl and her family.
Rachel was actively engaging the attention of those around her with laughs and smiles. Rachel did not seem to be afraid to be vocal to get a response from mom or mom’s friends. Of course, Rachel being 11 years old, she does not have a broad mindset which is the cause of her simplistic phrases that include repetition that help reflect her true age. “Not mine, not mine, not mine” repeating that the “ugly sweater” was not hers but clearly not being understood, Rachel must repeat this phrase -only in her head- just like any child would when not being listened to. Not only does this phrase inform the reader of Rachel’s weakness to stand up for herself but also of how she is accustomed to not being listened which has her thinking that she must repeat herself. Finding comfort in not only burying her face but in the thought of “mama's cake” and “everybody singing happy birthday”, she demonstrates that she feels smaller physically and emotionally so she continues this saying in her head to get her through her moment of the “sick feeling”. After constant wishing of being “102”, or “invisible” Rachel finally decides that it is too late for “mamas cake, “candles, presents and everybody will sing happy birthday” because she no longer feels “ten, and nine, and eight, and seven, and six, and five, and four, and three, and two, one” she no longer needs closure of her
Let Me Hear Your Voice is about a woman who has a daughter named Anne-Marie. Anne-Marie seems to be developing normally. Slowly the little girl begins to withdraw and perform repetitive tasks. Worried that something is seriously wrong with her two year old daughter, Catherine takes her to several different doctors, starting with her pediatrician. This doctor recommends that Catherine take Anne-Marie to a specialist, who diagnoses her with “Infantile Autism.” Several other professionals agree with this conclusion. After doing a great deal of research, Catherine decides to start a home based program for her daughter. Anne-Marie goes through a series of different therapies and eventually “recovers.” During this time period, Catherine becomes pregnant and has a happy baby boy. His name is Michel. Again, around the age of one and a half, Michel begins to decrease his talking and to throw severe temper tantrums. Additionally, Sandra Cineros expresses Rachel not only as the main character of the story, but also the narrator. From one perspective, we know we can label her as a reliable narrator since what she says we can believe is true because she believes it herself. However, though she might not intent on deceiving us, readers might consider her unreliable because of her age and how she might over or under express her experience. Moreover, she has a limited range to what she can relate her feelings too which communicates her narrow point of view. “…like my wooden dolls that fit one inside the other, each year inside the next one. That’s how being eleven years old is” (36). Rachel compares her age to her wooden dolls which illustrates her eleven year old mindset; therefore, she attains a limited and unreliable point of view. Overall, Rachel’s reliability and unreliability as a narrator shapes the story as a whole because readers now understand her emotional delicacy brought upon by her age which changes how readers perceive her thoughts and feelings. In the end, as first person persistently appears throughout the story “Eleven,” readers acquire a more profound and insightful understanding of Rachel’s emotions and thoughts and the powerful effect those feelings convey on the

The facility I did my observation at was Tutor Time in Fairfield, and I arrived there at 3:15pm. When I arrived there, I could instantly see that it was a child centered program by the feel of the artwork the kids had made that were on the walls, the passing classrooms and it smelled like sugar cookies throughout the building. It was very quiet in the office area and in the halls when I was walking to the class of preschoolers.

While to some this predicament may seem unnerving, to me it is a normal night at OSEP. This past year I was giving the opportunity to volunteer at OSEP, a program for special needs children and their siblings. The OSEP program provides a safe place twice a month for special needs children along with their siblings, which allows their parents a few hours to relax and have a night out. Most parents of special needs children can not find babysitters who are willing to watch their child, so OSEP gives parents that chance to have a small break. From my personal experiences, I have to come to the conclusion that it doesn't always work the way I believe when observing a child. I strongly feel that in order to get to know a child you should not spend most of your time observing him/her. Interacting with the child gives off better results. Not once or twice, this should be a consistent thing.
The first two years of a humans life are bursting with biosocial, cognitive, and psychosocial development. In the first few weeks after conception to two years after birth a child’s brain experiences more growth than any other organ in the body. During the first two years of a child’s life the brain is very plastic and malleable. In order for children to continue down a path of success and learning there are certain experiences a child must have in order to develop normally. The First Two years of a child life is responsible for the foundation that is layed.
The mother described the child as being a fussy infant who had trouble sleeping and would awake several times during the night. The mother also reports the child was a fussy eater, and she experienced trouble feeding her daughter during infancy and needed to switch her daughter to soy formula. Overall the mother reported that the daughter was a happy infant who smiled often. The mother reported her child being alert and responding positively to family members who visited and enjoyed playing with her toys. In regards to the development, the mother reported that her daughter seemed to be developing slower than her first child who hit certain milestones earlier.
By the time the students ended their reading and learned about Zoe’s kind action, they learned a new vocabulary word, empathy. I did my parent-child observation at a restaurant in Batesville Indiana. I went to a small family owned place called Wagner’s. I did my observation over Thanksgiving break after my family cut our Christmas tree down. This occurred on Saturday November 28th around 6pm. This is a place that I am relatively familiar with. I have been going there with my family every year since I was a young child. It is a pretty small restaurant. While one side has a bar, the other side is more family oriented. It is a child friendly place that has a small area that toddlers and young kids can play. It has coloring books and small toys.

“No, Dani!” I couldn’t believe myself, I was talking to her as if she were a dog. “You are a ‘re-tard’,” I still didn’t really knew what that meant, but using the word made me feel older. “I’m not playing with you anymore.” I tried to look like my mother when she refused to buy me more candy. Dani studied my face for a moment. “Go away!” I exclaimed. That did it. Dani cried, and I felt cold tears sliding down my cheeks too. She scurried away until I couldn’t see her anymore.
