A Social Network in its simplest definition is “an online community of people with a common interest who use a website or other technologies to communicate with each other and share information, resources, etc.: a business-oriented social network.”(APA) When social networking started to gain popularity in the early twentieth century, criticism regarding its negative impact on society began to emerge. Recently, however, social networking has had a positive impact in schools to educate and get children more involved. It has also created an enhanced place for learning, as students are more capable of comprehension when also having fun. The positive impact social networking has on the education and development of students will play a crucial role in future learning as well as the way students communicate.
Education officials as well as those who are in favor of a more modernized learning curriculum involving social networking believe that it institutes growth in social and technical aspects of both formal and informal styles of learning. In a formal learning environment, goals and objectives are determined by an outside department or agency. This means that the curriculum is set by a teacher, the school district, or a company that specializes in learning materials and effective curriculums. This form of learning has been around since the beginning of education with great success. Informal learning, however, consists of the learner setting the goals and objectives. In simpler terms, informal learning consists of some kind of group communication and participation. In a technology driven society, the utilization of social media in the classroom has become the best way to prepare the latest generation of students for the outside world. The positive impact social media has on the way students communicate and comprehend learning material is being embraced progressively more as its benefits are finally being realized. While not all people see social networking as a positive source for learning, it is clear that its presence in the classroom has a direct impact on the increased productivity and cognition levels of student learning. Times are changing, as they always do. Implementation of social networking on an educational basis is inevitable and necessary for future generations learning and overall success in such a technologically driven world.
