Social Media and its Impact on Interpersonal Communication Skills Before cell phones, people were forced to either write letters or meet face-to-face to get a message delivered. Before the invention of the Internet, people were forced to read to attain information, watch the news to know about what was going on in the world and socialize with others. However, there has been a major shift in the way we communicate due to the introduction of social media sites. Instead of the formal face-to-face interactions people were generally accustomed to, we have now developed an addiction to communication on social media networks. This has affected many social media users in numerous ways, whether it is poor mental health or poor sleep, social media is …show more content…
Starting from the first time they try to communicate with their parents, just days old. Then again, many children are now seen using Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat or Facebook to communicate with those around them. In the article, “Face Time vs. Screen Time: The Technological Impact on Communication,” Johnson mentions, “That ability to understand and catalogue emotions is more important than ever since the advent of the Internet, social media and texting. When Brackett was growing up, there was no Facebook for venting, no emoji catalogue to illustrate his feelings, no online community to listen,” (Johnson). Johnson’s comparison between the social media advances from today and the people that were brought up in a social media less era emphasizes the arising problems regarding emotion expression. In doing so, it creates a concerning tone for the readers. Those who grew up without the emotion expression advances from today had to communicate with others in person to show their genuine emotions. Like Johnson mentioned, there was no image keyboard that allowed someone to show they were confused or sad or mad or happy, there was no way to express a feeling without the person on the other side misinterpreting a message. In the long-run, people who take the necessary time and steps to allow their skills to mature are the people who have better, more advanced

Facebook, Twitter and other social platforms have become one of the central activities in human affairs. Used by people around the world promoting communication, social media gives scope to everyone to exhibit their ideas and thoughts. The plethora of social platforms is a revolutionary invention that is changing the way of how people moderate and communicate with others in their daily lives. Although many people admire this revolutionary concept, it can be argued that it has a negative impact on society. Extensive usage of social media can cause addiction, affecting productivity, and also reduce the level of human interaction, which in turn leads to isolation. Social media is correlated to many of the issues that revolve feminism and mental illness through anthropology, sociology and psychology.
Today people spend about seven hours and thirty-eight minutes per day on technology (Ives, p.18). The excessive amounts of technology, including the use of social media, has been negatively affecting our society as a whole. The problem is not the fact that we are using technology, but it is the overuse and excessive amounts that is hurting us. Although technology has some benefits, such as being able to use its tools effectively and being able to connect easily, we have to consider its social and psychiatric effects when it comes to using it in excessive amounts.
“Social media, a web-based and mobile technology, has turned communication into a social dialogue, and dominates the younger generation and their culture. As of 2010, Generation Y now outnumbers Baby Boomers, and 96% of Gen Y has joined a social network” (Qualman 1). Social media now accounts for the number one use of the Internet, and this percentage is rising bigger every day (Qualman). As a consequence, people are becoming more reliant on social media, which has a led to a number of advantageous as well as unfavorable effects. The world is more connected today than it has ever been in the past, and this is all because of growth in technology. What has yet to be determined though
It has been forty three years since the first email was delivered; since then, our ways of communication have changed. We are now living in a society in which almost everybody is provided with a piece of communicating technology to keep in touch with each other. Social networking service, a platform for people who want to share interests, activities, backgrounds or real-life connections over the Internet, has deeply affected our life in many ways. The debate as to whether the influences are positive or negative has been a controversial issue since 72 percent of all internet users are now active on social media (22 Social Media Facts and Statistics You Should Know in 2014). So, how does social media affect our lives? Speaking for myself, I think social networking is slowly damaging our everyday life by crawling into our personal life, turning into a deadly weapon, and becoming a dangerous addiction and distraction.
The world of social media: where we love to boast of our existences and chew on the fat of others. Hours spent scrolling through our phones; post after post, photo after photo, page after page. Justification comes in the form of the needs of a friend or even ourselves, a few minutes peaceful escape from the craze of the world into the raging fire of social media. But those minutes so easily become hours, hours a habit, and habit an addiction. All of us know
Social Media has brought on an epidemic of sleep deprivation to people of all ages. All through the night they wake with the “beeps” and “dings” of new messages. They have been craving the sound of a new message and when it comes, no matter what time of the day (or night), they are quick in responding to whatever and whoever the message may be about. This addiction has been kept in-check but with the cost of a good night’s sleep. Today’s generation has been leaving the thought of sleep behind only to lose valuable relaxation time. Many people “…text, tweet, check messages, and post things right before sleeping” (Addiction). This had been proven to “…reduce melatonin in the brain” (Addiction) thus taking away minute by minute of our precious sleep. We put our phones down when we think necessary and go to sleep only to be awaken again within the next half-an-hour. The fact that we keep our devices on through the night does not help our case.
To begin with, social media has been proven to be a dangerous addiction due to the many negative side effects like: sleep deprivation, and self-esteem problems. Most of the adult American population is connected to some sort of social media site, and they have joined the banned wagon of people whom check their social media accounts at least five times a day. Using social media to often can be time consuming and essentially causes sleep deprivation because the user stays up late on social media. Since social media has grown in popularity many have began to believe that social media is a life necessity. It is viewed by many as a daily necessity like brushing our teeth, or yet as important as eating. People whom are constantly on social media have been linked to develop self-esteem problems because they are so consumed on pretending and portraying this image of a person they are not. Social media has became such an addiction that many people wake up and the first thing they do is...
According to Tufts University social media refers to the means of interactions among people in which they create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks (www.tufts.edu). Current research indicates that there is a connection between increased social media use and deteriorated mental health. Unfortunately, young adults, the most active social media users, have a predominantly high risk for developing mental health issues, making this connection particularly concerning. Many lives may change to fit the mold of social media, and it may be consuming to the extent that one would miss out on real life scenarios in their immediate surroundings. It turns
We are living in the 21st century, the technology is more advanced. If you stepping outside in the society, you will see that everyone is caring a smartphone around with them every day, so that they can check their social medias at anytime and anywhere. Nowadays, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr, Twitter, and other social media, dominates both online and offline communication of college students and adults.
Social media has become an extremely powerful and useful tool that enables people in a modern society to effortlessly interact and socialize with each other via the internet; however, there is an extremely dark and little known side of social media: addiction. Social media has the potential to become extremely addictive to its users. The addictive nature of social media may intensely interfere with users daily obligations in the real world, which may make a recovery process necessary in order to quell the powerful addiction.
Social Media has evolved magnificently since the first email sent in 1971. Social media is any form of website or application which enables us to share content with one another with a simple sharing tool. Social media has become an addiction for most, if you were to ask the average student if they were connected to a social networking site, about 73 percent would reply with a yes. In addition, about 63 percent of people log on to a social media site daily and on average 40 percent log on multiple times a day. Everyone has their own reasons for the use of social media, which could include shopping, research, or other personal reasons like venting and status updates.

From the first email send to the domination of Facebook and other social media websites, it has changed the way people communicate. One of the main reasons why social media has positively affected our society is because of how it has made communicating with people much easier. “Today, four out of five active internet users maintain at least one social media profile” (Moe, 3).
