Humanities essay Identity is the condition of being oneself. One's identity is largely influenced by society. It has a far-reaching effect on identity by shaping beliefs, whether cultural, traditional or personal. It is why one's perspective on things is driven by what one’s society chooses to believe, because one is taught to think the way society tells them to. Society is inextricably linked to your identity. It completely affects your personal beliefs. A change in society would result in an impact on your personal beliefs which affects your identity. The history of Canada is an example of how society affects cultural beliefs. When the first European settlers came to Canada, society changed drastically for the first nations people. The Europeans started trades with the First Nations people. In exchange for animal furs, the First Nations would gain metallic goods like metal pots and pans, and guns, which changed the First Nations culture. Before the Europeans came, the First Nations didn't hunt as much. They efforts to not over-fish, over-hunt or over-harvest. They hunted, fished and collected what was needed to sustain their family or tribe. What they hunted, they used extremely conservatively. They would eat the meat, use the furs as clothes, use the fat and blubber as candles, and they bones as fertilizers. However, when the Europeans started trading with the First Nation, the First Nations created new cultural beliefs, and almost hunted animals such as the beaver to extinction. After the Europeans came, some of the Native American changed their culture into Christianity, which changed their identities.
