LOS ANGELES, California — A few years ago, the Houston Astros were awful. They were the worst team in Major League Baseball.
Now, the Astros are World Series champions.
On November 1, the team won its first championship ever. They beat the Los Angeles Dodgers. The score was 5 to 1. They won in Game 7, the deciding game.
The previous six World Series games were exciting. Game 7 was not as thrilling.
Fast Start For Astros Batters In Game 7
Yu Darvish was the starting pitcher for the Dodgers. He allowed five runs to score in the first two innings.
Astros player George Springer hit a double to start the game. Alex Bregman hit a ground ball. Dodgers first baseman Cody Bellinger fielded it. Then he threw the ball past Darvish. This mistake allowed a run to score.

0 after just eight pitches. Springer hit a home run in the second inning. That made the score 5 to 0. It was his fifth home run of the seven-game series. That tied the record for most home runs in a World Series. Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr.

"H Strong" Patches Honored Hurricane Victims
The Houston Astros wore special patches on their jerseys. They said "H Strong." These honored those hurt by Hurricane Harvey. The storm recently hit Houston.
The Astros started out in 1962 as the Colt .45s. They had flashy rainbow jerseys back then. They have had good teams before, but never good enough.
However, a few years ago, the team started collecting young, skilled players. Soon, a few became great, like Springer. Astros Carlos Correa and the pitcher Dallas Keuchel are some of the best in the game.
Houston won 101 times during the regular season. It then won Games 6 and 7 in the second round of the playoffs.
Dodgers Last Won Baseball Title In 1988
The Dodgers hoped for their first championship since 1988. They had 104 wins in the regular season. They were the best in the league.
Dodgers star pitcher Clayton Kershaw did not allow any runs in four innings for Los Angeles. By then, though, it was too late. The Astros had the
lead. The Dodgers were playing at home, in Los Angeles. Groups of Houston fans got louder in the later innings. By the end, the crowd at Dodger Stadium just had to repeat a sad, but hopeful saying. Wait till next year.

They also picked up power hitting outfielders Donn Clendenon and Tommie Agee. Finally the mets looked like a baseball team.Entering the 1969 season, my father said the mets wewr 160-1 to win the World Series, but the mets shocked everyone winning the national league championship. Now, this is how the mets won their first world series, The batter was cleon Jones, after striking out manager Gil Hodges notices a black mark on the ball. The black mark was shoe polish. Putting shoe polish on the ball makes it spin more and makes it much easier to strike out a batter.

As the decade opened up with the year 1950, the Yankees were celebrating an American League Pennant and a World Series victory from the previous year. It was apparent in 1950 that the team had not taken too much time off as the team posted a 98-56 regular season record, winning their second straight Pennant and a trip to the World Series where they would match up against the Philadelphia Phillies. In 1950, the Phillies were known as the Whiz kids because of their youth and amazing talent, but in the series against the Yankees they were swept in 4 games thanks to Joe DiMaggio- a legend in Major League baseball- and Phil Rizzuto- a shortstop who would enjoy one of his most productive seasons as well as the honor of earning American League MVP. Whitey Ford, a rookie pitcher for the Yanks, also enjoyed a stand out career, winning all 9 of his starts and losing only one game in relief. (Baseball History)
The Atlanta Braves is the longest operating franchise in the history of all professional sport leagues in America. They are the only organization to field a team every year that professional baseball has been in existence (“Story of the Braves”). The organization begin in 1871 as the Boston Red Stockings and overtime changed the name several more times before landing on what we know today as the Atlanta Braves. The organization began in Boston, moved to Milwaukee for a decade or so before finally making the move to Atlanta in 1966. It was at that time, the organization changed the name to the Atlanta Braves. Years later after the move to Atlanta, Ted Turner purchased the Braves and helped put them on a national platform. The New York Yankees lost to St. Louis in the 1926 World Series and came out in 1927 for revenge. (Geisler, 1) The Yankees opened the season on April 12th with an 8-3 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics and they never looked back. (Frommer, 5) The Yankees never fell out of first place after that first day and finished 19 games ahead of Philadelphia who won 91 games respectively. (New York Yankees, 3) An astonishing feat for today's strategic baseball moves, the '27 Yankees went all year without a single roster move. (Geisler, 1) With a tremendous team built by owner, Jacob Ruppert and General Manager, Ed Barrow, the scene was set for a big year. Certainly meeting the New York standards with a record of 110 wins and 44 losses the Yankees had many indiv...

Many considered Clemens’ best years the 13 seasons he was at the Red Sox. After 1996 he was not re-signed by the Red Sox because they felt he was in the twilight of his career. He was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays where he struggled a lot early on. Despite these early struggles, his career had a resurgence that many did not see coming. This resurgence is what caused the speculations of steroid use. After two years with the Toronto Blue Jays he won had the Cy Young award and the pitching Triple Crown both seasons. The triple crown is awarded to the pitcher that, at seasons end, leads the league in the three major categories: earned run average, wins, and strikeouts.

Many people know the main stars, but there are other great not as well known players from this era too. There are about eight players that totally overpowered all others in the game at this time. Three pitchers and four fielders dominated over all their competitors. These pitching greats are known as Howard “Smokey Joe” Wood, Ed Walsh, and Walter Johnson. The best fielders of the 1910’s are the household greats Honus Wagner, Babe Ruth, “Shoeless Joe” Jackson, and Ty Cobb. These seven players are listed because of their amazing achievements during this decade and even what some did after.
The highest paid baseball player in Major League Baseball history is a Latino. Alex Rodriguez signed a seven-year contract for two hundred and fifty-six million dollars in 2000. This not only made him the richest baseball player ever, but also the richest Latin American athlete in history. The signing of Alex Rodriguez proved that Latin American athletes deserved to sign big money contracts just like the other players.

Chicago Cubs baseball goes all the way back to April 25th, 1876 when they played the first game in the history of the Chicago National League Ball Club. However; at the time, they were not known as the “Cubs.” In general, they were known as the “White Stockings.” But a select few referred to them as the “Colts,” or “Orphans.” The team played in only five different locations in the 1800s because of the lack of places to play baseball at the time. As years went by, the league became popular, becoming one of the sports first dynasties. Chicago won six of the first eleven inaugural National League Championships (Cubs Timeline). In 1902, Frank Selee began managing Chicago to debut his managerial career. Just like managers, the name changed as well. A local newspaper penned the nickname “Cubs” for the first time. The name grew on people over time and was officially adopted in 1907. The year after that, victory arose in the city of Chicago. The season was filled with some of the greatest old-time baseball players. The batting line-up consisted of many good hitters and not jus...
