Homeostasis can be defined as the ability or tendency of an organism to maintain its stability. If an organism does not maintain homeostasis it will die. Dynamic equilibrium is what happens when the organism adjusts to maintain a constantly balanced internal environment. Dynamic equilibrium is caused by the organs inside humans and other animals fluctuating between increasing or decreasing their function to maintain homeostasis. The way these organs react is known as a response, and the response is reacting to a stimulus. A stimulus is something that affects the way organisms function. The body maintains homeostasis by working with the nervous system. The nervous system releases hormones which signal the cells or organs to decrease or increase their function. There are many things that impact whether an organism maintains homeostasis or not. Some include: body temperature, water balance, blood sugar concentration, blood pressure and blood pH, and to maintain homeostasis must be regulated. These functions are controlled by negative feedback mechanisms. Feedback mechanisms are mechanisms that control and regulate processes and internal conditions in an organism. The body will tell the pancreas to increase more glucose and the pancreas will secrete glucagon by taking glycogen from the liver to produce glucose. When the pancreas cannot maintain homeostasis, many problems will arise in the body. When the pancreas fails to produce insulin, type 1 and 2 diabetes can occur.
