When having a child you may think the schooling part of it will be pretty easy, right? They go to preschool and then all the way to high school, not to much to worry about for that. Well it’s not really that easy when you get down to it. Children should go to school programs before starting preschool such as Early Head Start (EHS) and Head Start. Having your child go to a EHS or HS program before they go to preschool is beneficial to their development. If a child stays home with a daycare provider or even their mother until they begin preschool they run the risk of being behind in school and becoming overwhelmed with all of the things going on around them. They offer a wide range of services that can help and child and their family. For the child, they help them develop early social and cognitive growth. Being around children that are their own age and in a new environment help them learn how to play next to a child and with a child which is a key way for kids to learn since most preschools have a play based learning curriculum. With specifically designed play areas and writing projects there cognitive growth is occurring too. Both of these, social and cognitive, growths will help them throughout the rest of their schooling and especially on testing. These programs don't only help the child but they also greatly impact the parents. For the parents, they offer full days and half days so the parents are not worried about trying to get their child multiple places during the day. EHS and HS are also very supportive of family functions which can be beneficial to any family. This gives them a way to be with their children and others they are with all day and grow together but also very cost efficient which important to almost any family. Being in EHS or HS also jumpstarts families at home to start reading more and doing activities they may be in HS which bonds families
Children need preschool in its most basic essence: to define motor skills, achieve basic socialization skills, and to learn the alphanumeric system that will undoubtedly help improve their understanding in the grades to come, allowing for the advances in education that America desires and certainly needs. Making preschool mandatory as part of the education reforms that America so desperately requires will combat the lack of educational programming that exists and allow children to receive education at a younger age than they would have in a home where education is not a main family focus.
My first observation was at Head Start. I talked to Tracey Claflin about some of the principles they use in their program and how they use them. I wasn’t able to observe the children directly because my TB skin test results came up positive. Tracey explained to me that because my results were positive I couldn’t meet children or be in the same room as the children. Due to this, I had to make some arrangements to instead speak with Tracey about some principles she has seen and that they follow. I met with her for an hour discussing the principles and how they were used in the Head Start program. One of the principles she said was highly important for Head Start was principle number 2. She explained that when there is enough time and opportunities to spend time with a child individually the caregiver puts full attention on one child. She explained that they like to focus attention on a child throughout the day so that the child doesn’t feel left out. She says that alone time for a child with a caregiver is usually tummy time. They allow the infants and toddlers to roll around and look at the carpet designs. Tracey explained to me how they asses each child through this quality time that the caregiver and the child have alone. This quality time the caregiver has with the child is important,

In order for a child care center to be a quality center they must have an educated staff, a program accreditation, and good health and safety practices. Parents choose high quality child care for many reasons. These programs prepare children for school in which they gain intellectual and social skills. Also the programs are a good opportunity for children because they receive age-appropriate learning materials and activities to let the children learn and grow.

Babies don’t stay babies forever. Eventually, they turn four and parents have to make the difficult decision of putting them in preschool or keeping them to themselves for an extra year. This decision could be life changing for a child, however, it could also be too much for a four year old.
