General Information:
ImageText BoxImageOne of the biggest threats to the environment of Ontario is the Gypsy Moth (Lymantria dispar dispar). The species itself is native to Europe and Asia. How this affects us is by weakening trees across Ontario and North America. The first time the gypsy moth was found in Ontario was 1969. The gypsy moth can be found in southern Canada (Ontario), New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and British Columbia. It is known to weaken trees and the caterpillar form live in trees and during most outbreaks its caterpillar feces would fall from the trees to the ground or even on top of humans. The average Gypsy Caterpillar can grow 5-6 centimeters long. With five pairs of blue spots and six pairs of bright red dots on their back. The female moth are white and can fly on the other hand, the male moth are brown and can also fly. The female have a 5cm wing span but male have a 2.5cm wing span. The gypsy moth usually lives in open forests and other forests and take up at least 20% of the space. The Gypsy moth are about 4cm long, tan coloured and can be located on tree trunks, furniture, and buildings. (OFAH Invading Species Awareness Program, 2012)

7-10 years. Currently the Gypsy moth is not extinct or endangered, the Gypsy moth is actually in Optimum population. The outbreaks occur because of its quick production rate. Therefore, causing an outbreak and to them becoming overpopulated causing negative effect in the ecosystem. Because of that, humans would try to remove the moths from their ecosystems or even killing them with pesticides. This causes them to be back to an optimum population this happens every 7-10 years. Thus, the Gypsy moth is currently in optimum state which to us isn’t a good thing to biotic or abiotic creatures in Ontario. (Animal Diversity Web, 2009) Factors Causing Spread Of Species: ImageThe Gypsy moth has a knack of spreading and causing outbreak. The Gypsy moth native to Europe, was accidently introduced to the US, later being spread to Canada considering the various methods of transit. One can be when tree branches containing Gypsy moths as a caterpillar were to break off and fall or if the caterpillar were to fall of the branch or tree and there was a lot of wind the caterpillars can fall off and get blown away to another habitat. They can crawl onto places that humans won’t notice they are in and something humans use regularly such as tires, as humans use car tires and bring them on a road trip you can also introduce the species. The Gypsy moth may lay eggs in areas such as firewood, or bags of fertilizer. Therefore they get transported to another location. The question is why the eggs don’t fall of the tires but the gypsy moth eggs stick to wherever they are laid and are really tough to break and get damaged. (Gypsy Moth Adversity, 2007) Future Sustainability: The future sustainability of this invasive species always remains a question.
Humans are trying everything they can to trap the Gypsy moth and try to remove it from there eco-system, but the Gypsy moth keeps on reproducing. An annual trapping program is one method in which they place traps that attracts male Gypsy moths and gets them stuck in a sticky surface. If a substantial amount of moths are caught by the trap then more traps are set in that ecosystem. Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (BTK) is a toxic soil bacterium that is sprayed over an area to prevent defoliation. When Gypsy moths are exposed to BTK the toxic causes stomach poisoning and they would eventually die. (Government of Canada,
2009) Species That Are Directly/Indirectly Affected By The Gypsy Moth Presence: Many species are affected by Gypsy moths including us as humans. The gypsy moth also feeds on shrubs causing competition with native species for food, and if the Gypsy moth beats out the native species it can cause the extinction of the native species because of the lack of food. When the Gypsy moth weaken trees and hardwood there are two ways it can affect a variety of different species one of them us. Weakening trees can cause a big loss of habitat to a lot of species that live in trees. Weakening hardwood can cause a loss of resource for humans. Weakening trees can cause trees to die making our world less eco-friendly. Therefore affecting the sustainability of any biotic species that rely on trees. (Animal Diversity Web, 2009) Implications To Human Interests: The Gypsy moth affects humans severely. One big ecological effect Gypsy Moths have on the environment is that they can cause defoliation. Defoliation is to destroy or cause widespread of leaves. They can cause short term effects to forestry such as tree health to deteriorate, growth of wood in susceptible trees may decrease, and many more side effects. Some long term effects are that some trees may die after defoliation, and the overall forest may be affected. Defoliation can affect the water quality as well. It can cause increase in water temperature and water yield, while decrease in dissolved oxygen that could affect marine organisms. It is also possible to see a decline in gray squirrels, some bird species, population of small mammals, forest-dwelling invertebrates and etc. There may be a significant increase in the predators of Gypsy moths such as deer, bats, etc. The economy can be greatly affected by Gypsy moths. Some people tend to stay indoors more to avoid contact or exposure to Gypsy Moths and the repeated heavy defoliation can change the nature of an area, recreation and tourism businesses may suffer loss of money. Economic losses can also result from damage done to trees and subsequent reduction in property values. (General Manager, Parks, Forestry and Recreation, 2012) Gypsy moths are well-known because they are able to eat all of the leaves on almost any kind of tree. If they eat more than half of the leaves on the top of the tree, they usually die. Growing all of the leaves all over again takes a lot of energy for the tree, and trees that have been eaten by gypsy moths are more likely to get attacked by viruses or insect parasites. This costs money for the timber business, removing dead trees, and reducing property values. Although Gypsy moth exposure is unlikely to affect human health. If human exposure to airborne Gypsy moth hairs, silken threads, shed skins during large-scale infestations can cause skin rashes and upper respiratory tract symptoms. Since some control methods require spraying of chemicals, those chemicals could affect humans. Although Gypsy moth exposure is unlikely to affect human health. (USDA, 1995) Determine The Individuals Or Organizations Most Closely Associated With The Species And How They Effect Positive Change There many organizations and individuals associated with the Gypsy Moth such as: The Canadian Inspection Agency – This organization helps spread awareness and caution of different species such as the Gypsy Moth. They also help remove the Gypsy Moth from anywhere in Ontario. (Canadian Food Inspection Agency, 2012) Residents That Live Near Gypsy Moths – The residents are associated because they don’t want to get rashes and often during outbreaks write petitions to the mayor to take more action. Ontario’s invading species program – This organization is to spread awareness of Gypsy Moths and show ways of protection towards the gypsy moth. (OFAH Invading Species Awareness Program, 2012) ISA Ontario - This organization helps spread awareness and caution of different species such as the Gypsy Moth. Does someone need to die in order to gain and obtain equality amongst the others? In the novel In Time of the Butterflies, written by Julia Alvarez, the main character and the subordinate character affect the plot of the novel because they develop a strong relationship. Their relationship becomes so strong that they devise a rebellion. Their rebellion had many outcomes whether being possible or negative. They manage to get equality and respect amongst the people of their land, but they sacrifice their lives and others to obtain it.
It’s light blue wings flutter softly as it flies from Lupine plant to Lupine plant. Icaricia icarioides missionensis ( Mission Blue Butterfly) was discovered in 1937. Icaricia icarioides missionensis is native to the San Francisco Bay Area of California. It has lost most of it habitat in the region to development , and is thus limited to residing only in the Twin Peaks of San Francisco, Fort Baker in Marin County, and San Bruno Mountain in San Mateo County. Human beings are the main reason for the decline in the Mission Blue’s natural habitat. If something is not done to prevent further damage, and reverse the previous, Icaricia icarioides missionensis will be in danger of becoming extinct. Various wildlife preservation organizations, such as the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, have come up with several methods for attempting to recover the Mission Blue population.
Moth Man is alive he is seen where there is destruction he is living and waiting out in the mountains of West Virginia for the next tragedy to happen(Cryptid). The first sighting was with a young couple while driving near the abandoned TNT plant near Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Spotting the very large winged man moving toward them they speed off. The couple was followed down Highway 62 to Point Pleasant city limits. The Mothman moved extremely fast behind them reaching high speeds during the chase. Some people don’t believe stories just like these one because they hold little solid facts. The stories do hold truth though because we can base it off facts that the couple had no reason to lie and were honestly scared. The MothMan is real and he is somewhere ready to be found.
Fear is 99% of the reason why social change never occurs. In In the time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez, the Dominican people are oppressed by the dictator at the time, Trujillo, and never do anything about it. Perhaps some are too naive to understand what is going on. Perhaps it is the police state or the regime as a fear factor. Perhaps they support the regime because their lives depend on it. Either way, people lacked the urge to fight the monolithic power of Trujillo. The Mirabal Sisters present an opportunity and a model for others due to their solidarity and fierce nationalistic feelings towards the dictatorship. Social change can only occur when the people are willing to be informed, take action, and a catalyst occurs.
It is challenging to analyze phenotypes when there is little information known about genes. With the moths, nobody knows which of the moth's genes are responsible for the changes in color, so a genetic analysis is extremely difficult to do.
On the contrary, President Obama “unveiled a plan aimed at stopping the rapid decline in bee and butterfly populations” (“On May 19”). His plans are to reduce the death rate of bees which in turn will help out the agricultural production. He also plans to clear land in order to give the bees a bigger environment in which to repopulation and will ensure that no bees are harmed in the process (“On May 19”). The president sees the devastation that the decline could cause and is trying to combat the issue. The European Union has banned three pesticides in order to combat the decline but “have fallen short of providing adequate safeguards for the re-propagation of bee colonies”(“Bee research”). Governments are taking notice of the problem ahead yet still we are until to achieve the full support of all
What can we actively take part in to stop the collapse of bee colonies? Bees are such a vital part of our everyday agriculture production, however, colonies are diminishing before our eyes. Colony Collapse Disorder is a massive decrease of bees in hives and it is greatly affecting our crops because bees are not distributing the necessary amount of pollen to crops in order for them to grow the maximum, most nutritious produce possible. There are many solutions that may help CCD, such as banning neonics, urban beekeeping, and interbreeding honey bees with African killer bees. The most effective way to decrease CCD is by interbreeding honey bees with a stronger specie of bees labeled African killer bees.
Margaret And The Moth Tree by Brit and Kari Trogen. I think this portion of the story is written to explain to kids and adults to always be kind, honest and have a big heart even if the other person is rude, selfish and is and a liar!!! The first main idea of this portion is that as Margaret spended more and more time with Ms.Switch she felt more and more sad because of all the people she ever lived with and how they died even her mom and dad when she barely lived with them. Why she thought about it was because when the people who wanted to make the orphanage company came they kept on talking about their children. Margaret
Have you ever wondered what gliding possums are? Gliding possums are small omnivorous, arboreal, and nocturnal gliding possums belonging to the marsupial infraclass. The common name refers to its preference for sugary nectarous foods and ability to glide through the air much like a flying squirrel.
The worldwide eradication of honey bees may not be too far away. The reasons the honey bees are dying are linked to a number of things. The most common causes are linked to industrial agriculture, parasites/pathogens, and climate change, according to the article entitled “The Bees in Decline” on GreenPeace’s website, SOS-bees.org. However, bee-killing pesticides pose the highest risk to the pollinators (the Bees). Honey bees are not the only form of pollinators.
Softball is not only about your skill but it is also about having the proper equipment to help you succeed. One of the biggest disadvantages in softball is having a bat that doesn't hit well, thats why having a good bat is essential to succeeding during the game. The xeno bat is not only inexpensive but comes with other benefits that make it the best bat when it comes to softball. Having the xeno softball bat is the best bat to have because it has a good balance point for when you are swinging for a fastpitch ball. The Xeno also has an advance transition between the barrel and handle, and it has an extra long double walled-barrel. Finally the xeno bat is a contact hitter friendly bat that is beneficial in more than one way. All these factors
Scientists right now have know idea what is causing it, but they believe it is something like AIDS(acquired immune deficiency syndrome) in humans. It severely weakens the immune system and makes the insect/animal/person very weak and vulnerable to all sorts of diseases. Some scientists believe that the virus that started CCD, or was the final spark to light the fire to start CCD, was found in Australian bees. Penn State University theorizes that some of the newer pesticides are effecting the bees ability to learn, thus, keeping them from finding their way back to the hive. Or, the chemicals may be suppressing their immune system. Pollen samples were taken from bees that were left in a field that was sprayed with pesticides, and the tests showed that the pollen contained ...
Virginia Woolf’s “Death of the Moth” is a short story centered around the life and death of a moth on a beautiful day. Although the essay tells the story of the life a moth, many aspects of the piece such as its mood, can be mirrored to life in general. In the story, Virginia Woolf gradually changes the mood from an energetic and lively mood to a gloomy and quiet one through her use of active verbs, vivid imagery and varying sentence structure in order to accurately depict the darkness and ignominy of death.
Moth Smoke takes place in Lahore, Pakistan and depicts the experience of a low-class citizen named Daru. The book represents the struggles of the less wealthy in a country where most of the high-class individuals are corrupt. There is also such a high level of inequality that the elite are able to seperate themselves from the laws that hold the rest of society in their place. Daru is a young banker who grew up near high society because of his friend, Ozi, but whose lack of personal connections prevent him from being actually considered high-class. I argue that Daru’s experience throughout the book provides commentary on how an elitist society can render a man or women helpless to the privilege of the wealthy and turn them towards the desires
