Reason 1: Current gun laws need reform because there are too many accidental shootings involving young children. Children are at risk. They are curious, so when guns are in a home and not locked up, they have a chance of misusing a gun just because they are exploring the adult world. Chief editor of the NLCATP states, “proponents of the 2nd Amendment sometimes even complain about laws that require a weapon to be secured, citing the idea that if your gun is locked up how will it protect you.” The likeliness of an intruder coming into someone’s home is slim. A child is likely to be in the home everyday. A home security system could prevent a break in from an intruder or allow time for the police to come. With the extra time, a secured gun could be accessed. The Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence reported results from a study about states that had child prevention laws in place, “One study found that in twelve states where such laws had been in effect for at least one year, unintentional firearm deaths fell by 23% from 1990-94 among children under 15 years of age.” The Federal government doesn’t have laws about no child access prevention, and federal law does not generally require gun owners to safely store their guns. on them. In 2013, only 27 states of 50 had enacted child access prevention laws. (smartgunlaws.org). This isn’t very effective. The Federal Government should enact laws for all states that improve gun safety in homes. Easy access to guns also increases mass shootings. In July 2004, the U.S. Secret Service and U.S. Department of Education published a study examining 37 school shootings from 1974-2000, “That study found that in more than 65% of the cases, the attacker got the gun from his or her own home or that of a relative”(smartgunlaws.org). Reason 2: Current gun laws need reform because too many politicians are being bribed by gun rights supports.
In 2015 a bill was brought to congress to tighten background check requirements on purchasers of fire arms. The bill failed. Opensecrets.org reported, “The amendment failed 48-50, receiving fewer votes than it did in 2013. Once again, almost all of the lawmakers who voted "nay" have received substantial amounts of money from the political action committees of gun rights groups, including the National Rifle Association.” Whenever a bill tries to get passed by the senate, the people who are saying they don’t want the bill to be passed are actually being
bribed. Note to Alex: Tell more about the influence the NRA has. Also tell about the 2016 presidential candidates and how much money they get from gun supporters. Tell how this should be illegal. Could give more stats about gun violence. Reason 3: Current gun laws need reform because individuals who carry concealed weapons for personal protection actually increase their odds of being harmed. Kai Kloepfer, an engineer specializing in gun safety, in 2014 on a Ted Talk explained studies showed that people, “carrying a gun for self-defense was 4.5 times more likely to be shot during an assault than an assault victim without a gun.” Reason 4: Current gun laws need reform because too many people can easily access guns with current background check practices.
As the generations of America’s youth continue to grow, so does the increase in violent crimes associated with each generation. Over the last decade, studies have shown that school shootings have increased by an astonishing 13%. Although this figure as a percentage does not seem like much, it makes one stop and think. Parents blame the video games and their violent behaviors for the influence on their children’s daily lives. Grandparents blame the child’s parents for not showing them the right way to grow up in the world. And then we have that child’s friends who say that this child just was not respected by their classmates, or perhaps even bullied into this violent nature. Regardless of the cause to this violent increase, many Americans do believe in a solution: gun control. Gun control is the situation in which the federal government would put a ban on owning firearms. Contrary to what many “hard-core” Americans believe, gun control would not necessarily ban them from owning hunting rifles or even personal handguns. It would simply limit the ownership of semi-automatic assault rifles, and other rifles of this nature. This does not contradict the Second Amendment of the Constitution which states that American citizens have the Right to Bear Arms. I believe in the constitutional Right to Bear Arms, and I am against any attempt to eradicate that right for any American citizen: however, I am for gun control in the sense of lowering the possession of semi-automatic and fully-automatic rifles.
Gun Control in America is seen as ineffective, citizens believe gun control laws in place are not protecting lives, but taking them away. In order to solve this problem, many think more laws should be put in place. By doing so, they believe guns would no longer be in the hands of criminals and lives would not be ended before their time. In Christine Watkins’s article, “Stronger Gun Control Will Save Lives” She explains that if guns were objects that truly kept us safe, America would be the safest country in the world. She also states that a gun in any home is more likely to be mistreated, causing an accidental shooting. She also hints that more common sense laws would greatly benefit gun owners (Stronger Gun Control). One of her points is quite agreeable, more common sense gun laws would be entirely useful in the long run. By having more safety guidelines, such as; trigger locks, which make it so the gun cannot be used, keeping the ammunition and the gun separated, never pointing a gun at another person, unless your life is in life threatening danger, making sure the weapon is properly cleaned on a regular basis, and even teaching children how to properly handle weapons. By taking these common sense precautions to use, it would prevent innumerable accidental misfires in homes. On the other hand, laws put in place to simply make it more difficult to obtain a weapon is not the answer. By keeping guns out of the lawful citizen’s hands, only the lawbreakers will benefit. Author John R. Lott, Jr. wrote the book entitled More Guns Less Crimes, informs readers that by having a concealed weapon, as opposed to carrying a weapon openly, carries more potential to reduce crime rates across America. By concealing a weapon, no one knows who is ...
Some of the deaths that were caused by gun violence was dealt to small children.Having a firearm in your home can cause a great risk if you have a child in your home because a firearm can be accessed by a child. In many situation the child is playing with firearm without adult supervision and end up either wounding themselves or end up dead. According to CNN “Guns kill Nearly 1,300 US children each year.”Also when a firearm is easily accessible a child will often grab a hold of it and it could be a possibility that they can take it to school there were some cases where a kid took a firearm to school and opened
Others believe a child could find the gun and something bad could happen to the child or others when the gun is unsafely stored. People who argue against gun control might say there is a huge psychological gap between citizens who shoot to protect themselves or their property and those who go into schools and shoot at others. Criminals will always find a way around gun control laws and will be able to obtain and use guns illegally. The Second Amendment protects gun rights for individual citizens. Reasonable gun control laws and educational steps can be taken to protect the majority of U.S. citizens.
One way the youth are getting their hands on guns so easily are guns in the residence. Not saying guns shouldn’t be in homes, they’re still a way of protecting one’s self and others. Parents just need to do a way better job of concealing their firearms. A significant number of adults with...
Gun control is a highly controversial topic in today’s world where the fight is between the liberal and the conservatives. Many people believe that guns should be banned due to many recent massacres that have happened whereas others are wanting people to have background checks done before owning a gun. I am against gun control because banning handguns in the United States should not be allowed because handguns fail to protect the people and it is ineffective.
“I believe in 2nd Amendment, but not war weapons on streets”, quoted President Barack Obama ("Barack Obama on Gun Control", n.d., para. 3). The debate on whether stricter gun laws will help deter crime has gained much attention since crime rates started to increase. Many research studies show that stricter gun laws are very effective at inhibiting crime. Arguing on the affirmative side, stricter gun laws will help deter crime by banning ownership of military-style assault weapons, by banning weapons with high-capacity magazines, and by creating new gun regulations that delays the process of gun ownership while significantly limiting weapon access at the same time. If stricter gun laws are incorporated into the system, we will be able to envision a bright and crime-free future ahead of us.
The topic of gun control comes with a widely spilt crowd. Some people believe that gun control is essential, especially in today’s world. Some people think gun control will help with decreasing crime and making the nation a safer place for us to live. On the other hand, there are people who speak of anti-gun control. These people believe the right to bear arms would make our nation a safe place to live due to the fact that we would have protection. Do you think the Government has the right to make something illegal like the right to bear arm? In my opinion, the Government cannot simply because it will be an offence to our founding fathers, who gave us the national right to bear arm. Also, for making
...eryone on the ‘lookout’, it is hard to just live your life. “None of these bills actually prevent violence. Rather, they help deteriorate the quality of life in our communities” (Roth 1). Guns are ruining our communities by showing the people that it is acceptable to take action if you are frightened. Sometimes, taking action can be the worst possible solution to a crisis. If a person takes action, it shows that you are brave, but, it also shows the criminal that you are actually a threat to them. This would raise the death toll significantly.
Crime and guns. The two seem to go hand in hand with one another. But are the two really associated? Do guns necessarily lead to crime? And if so do laws placing restrictions on firearm ownership and use stop the crime or protect the citizens? These are the questions many citizens and lawmakers are asking themselves when setting about to create gun control laws. The debate over gun control, however, is nothing new. In 1924, Presidential Candidate, Robert La Follete said, “our choice is not merely to support or oppose gun control but to decide who can own which guns under what conditions.” Clearly this debate still goes on today and is the very reason for the formation of gun control laws.
All of this talk about gun control is really getting on my nerves. Why does it really matter who owns a gun and who doesn’t? Why is it that you have to register the gun you bought in your name? That’s not really any one's business. Why is it that everyone must pass a background check to be able to purchase a gun? Who cares if the buyer is a prison escapee? That’s a little too personal if you ask me.This is America for goodness sake, land of the free! Everyone should be able to purchase their own gun and do as they please with it. It will make life a lot easier and a lot safer.
Gun violence in America is a public health crisis, which needs to be recognized and changed by legislatures, and the voting American. As conscious Americans, we need to vote for changes to gun laws that would improve background checks nation-wide, make firearm registration mandatory, restrict the sale of assault weapons and weapon modifications that give the shooter military-grade fire power, and invest in gun-safe technology and safe firearms storage designs. This type of technology will help prevent criminally oriented people from accessing guns, and will help prevent the accidental deaths of many children by guns. This essay will explain the reforms needed to help ensure Americans can still exercise their 2nd amendment right of owning firearms, and preventing the unnecessary deaths of many Americans at the same time.
Guns, unless they are loaded, pose no threat to anyone living in the household. If people weren’t allowed to keep guns in the home, or there were strict regulations against the way you could have guns in your home, the amount of robberies would increase. Criminals or drug addicts would rather rob a house than go get a job. Other than getting caught, the incentives outweigh the risk.
In my opinion, if guns are the leading cause of deaths or problems in America, then why should they have laws permitting the right to have them? The Americans believe that if they have more guns, all their problems will disappear. They believe that if they have a gun, they can stop anyone who tries to harm them. When expressed as such this may seem logical; that by having a weapon one can stop other people who have a weapon from hurting them. They do not have to wait for the police to defend themselves because they already have the materials to do so. However, this is somewhat illogical because no one will attack another person unless provoked; so unless they are a criminal, guns are unnecessary. Americans try to justify it by blaming the second
Should people be able to have guns in there house for protection for when someone breaks in and has a gun of their own? Should you be able to shoot the person if they break into your house without them even firing a shot off? The Second Amendment gives Americans the right to own and carry guns. Gun control infringes on this right and limits people's ability to defend themselves. Gun control keeps guns out of the hands of the urban poor, the people who are most in need of self defense. Ironically, laws that allow people to carry concealed guns have been shown to reduce violent crime in minority communities. The dangers of limiting the right to self defense go beyond its effects in urban areas. When citizens lose the right to own guns, tyranny and genocide often follow, as has been shown by the actions of Hitler, Stalin, and Pol Pot. "A gun in the home is more likely to kill a member of the family than to defend against an intruder," we hear. "Allowing citizens to carry firearms outside the home for self-protection will turn our streets into Dodge City and our parking lots into the O.K. Corral," the refrain
