William Faulkner once said, “Given a choice between grief and nothing, I’d choose grief.” This quote may have different meanings to different people depending on their experiences in life, but what does this quote mean to me? For me, grief is a part of life. I believe that if life was easy and we never went through traumatic experiences or had the experience of failure, it wouldn’t be worth it. In “A Rose for Emily,” William Faulkner tells us about the lonely life of a woman named Miss Emily. Miss Emily has experienced death and refuses to believe the idea because of her denial. When her father dies, the townspeople come to give their condolences, but she tells them that her father is still alive. She does not feel any grief towards the death of her father. William Faulkner shows how Emily’s attempt to overpower death causes her to slowly give in to it. I believe that grieving is indeed important and Faulkner shows why through Miss Emily’s experiences with the deaths of her loved ones and the rapid decline of her mental state.
Miss Emily decides to feel nothing and be in denial when ...

In the book Literature by Edgar V Roberts, Faulkner begins the story “A Rose for Emily” with an extremely long sentence which shows the communities reaction to death and immediately displays a scene through gender differences:
More often than not, when analyzing the similarities and differences between a written story and its reimagined film version, the differences leave an altered impression on the audience. In the short story, A Rose for Emily, the outstanding differences take the viewer on a ride they didn’t experience when reading the story. The biggest alteration is how the story’s chronological order takes a twist as they place the events back into an order in which they happened. Even though it is easier to follow, the original version left the audience dazed and confused for a reason. It made it less predictable, and allowed the reader to guess why Emily did those things. The offbeat approach the film takes adds more romance, rearranges the original time
In William Faulkner’s short story, “A Rose for Emily”, the butler is directly related to the traditional values in the older generation. Because of his status and race the butler is not allowed to openly express his ideals like Emily is allowed to. The butler’s role is to display the traditions of the older southern generation. The butler serves his role thorough this story by being excessively loyal and protective of Emily, by fulfilling his duty as a servant, and by being racial discriminated against from people in the town.
In William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” the main character named Emily is a women of high status and is the gossip of the town. Emily was thirty and remained unmarried. Soon she found a Northern man named Homer Baron and was spending most of her time with him until the town didn’t see him after he stepped foot into the house of Emily. The narrator/detective revealed at the end a very disturbing attribute about what was held in Emily’s house. However, William Faulkner’s idea of a detective story is far from becoming visible as the traditions make it stand. Based on William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily,” he used a unique style to re-create detective genres that clearly made him an extraordinary writer
Unattainable Love and Time Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" In the story "A Rose for Emily," the author, William Faulkner, recounts the life of a woman from an elite family in the Deep South. Emily Grierson is an eccentric spinster who goes through her life searching for love and security. Due to her relationship with her father, and the intrusiveness of the townspeople in her life, she is unable to get away from her past. Arising from a young woman's search for love, the use of symbolism profoundly develops the theme, therefore, bringing to light the issues of morality.
One may have heard the simple saying that “Love can make you do crazy things.” Many adults can confirm that the saying proves true; one could even spend a few hours watching CSI type of shows that portray the stories of two love-struck people becoming cold-hearted killers just to be with their significant other. Why would they be so desperate to be together that they would kill anyone who got in between them? Desperation so serve that they would even kill a loved one? It could be that as children they were deprived of love and nourishment that children normally receive. This deprivation of love led them to cling to anyone that made them think they were being love. In A Rose for Emily and Tell-Tale Heart a character murders someone who they love. The two works, share similarities and differences when it comes to the characters, the narratives point of view and reason for killing a loved one.
William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" is a tragic tale of a Southern aristocrat, Miss Emily Grierson, who is the subject of a town's obsession. The narrator, a member of the town, tells the story of what transpires in a decaying old Southern house that is always under the watchful eye of the townspeople. They witness Miss Emily's life, her father's death, her turn to insanity and the death of both her and her lover. The theme of death runs throughout this tale, which is understandable considering the events that take place in the story. Faulkner uses foreshadowing to foretell events that will transpire later in the story. Because of this foreshadowing, a reader may not be shocked when a strange turn in the story occurs, because, it may seem familiar to him. Faulkner's first use of foreshadowing begins with the death of Miss Emily. The main character does not usually die in the first sentence of most works of fiction, but here Faulkner is foretelling the deaths of other characters that will follow. The reader will learn more about Emily's life and death as the story unfolds.
In William Faulkner’s short story “A Rose for Emily”, we never hear the mention of a rose. The rose is a symbol of sympathy and pity that we feel towards her. Emily reflected the rose. She wanted to blossom and bloom but she was held down and lock up from the real world. Emily was the daughter of a rich man, a town hero. Her father, although he was looked up to by the town, was demanding and controlling. He turned down every man that he didn’t feel was worthy of his daughter. He set her up for a life that she could not escape. She became used to this lifestyle and it became who she was. When her father passed,
In William Faulkner’s short story “A Rose for Emily” he uses many literary elements to portray the life of Emily and the town of Jefferson. The theme of the past versus the present is in a sense the story of Miss Emily’s life. Miss Emily is the representation of the Old South versus the New South, mainly because of her inability to interact with the present or come to terms with reality. Holding onto the past and rejecting change into the present led Miss Emily into a life of isolation and mental issues.
Some changes in life are inevitable such as the aging process and death. Any day can be one’s last day walking or breathing, and for some the object of letting go of someone held for so long is tragic. It may even seem like the deceased person is still alive and everything is operating as normal or that it was all a big dream. In William Faulkner’s, “A Rose For Emily” the idea of Emily Grierson letting go of the only man she’s ever loved and cherished, in her father, leaves her torn apart. Looking to fill the fresh wound inside her heart, Emily sought desperate measures to ensure that the next man she loved would never leave her.
Faulkner tried to express that one should not be dead while living like Miss Emily did. Though he accepts the fact that everyone is going to die, which would be a concept Miss Emily would ignore, he does not believe one should be so willing to do so. In the poem he is basically pleading to this father to not embrace the idea of death. “And you, my father, there on the sad height,/ Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray./ Do not go gentle into that good night.” (Lines 16-18). The good night that he is referring to is death. Faulkner is trying to say that one should do as much living as possible before death. We only have one chance at being alive and not everyone treats it the same. Why worry about death if it is going to happen eventually? Why would one be so willing to go into that good night as Miss Emily was? This is why William Faulkner would not have enjoyed the company of Miss Emily in her years before death. The same as everyone
Death – With the passing of Emily’s father, Homer, and herself, Faulkner shows the overpowering nature of death and the fact that no one can escape it. When Miss Emily passes, it restates this fact, because it shows that even someone who is a staple of the town will eventually wither and die.
With every turn of the page, the dark and twisted storyline of “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner leaves the reader in a stronger state of shock and inevitably speechless. Faulkner cleverly uses symbols, characters, and theme to illustrate the inner thoughts of Emily Grierson and the community’s ongoing struggle between tradition and modernism. .
Through the use of setting, characterization and theme Faulkner was able to create quite a mysterious and memorable story. "A Rose for Emily" is more than just a story though; her death represents the passing of a more genteel way of life. That is much more saddening than the unforgettable scene of Homer's decaying body. The loss of respect and politeness is has a much greater impact on society than a construction worker who by trade is always trying to change things. Generation after generation Miss Emily happily escaped modernism by locking herself in her house the past.
