Glow sticks
Imagine this instead of the everyday normal light bulbs, you add a little splash of color by using glow sticks as the “ light bulb” for your house. So have you ever thought of using glow sticks to light your house with all the wonderful colors and the many combination of those colors. But would using glow sticks a the main light source work? After all glow stick do not use electricity to create the light. We would save a lot of electricity with glow sticks, but the last such a short time. The other thing about glow sticks know is that no one knows who invented them, everyone and I mean just about every one knows that Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. So who invented the glow sticks when did they first appear, and why on earth are they here in the first place, lets find out.
Short history on glow sticks.
One of the reason the military likes the invention of glow sticks, is they need work done in the dark and under water and the do not want to use big heavy equipment. Glow sticks were invented in 1962 by Dr. Edwin Chandross. During the same time the U.S navy was also experimenting with cold lights which are lights that do not produce heat. In 1973 the navy was awarded one of the first patents for glow sticks. This did not stop other inventors from working on their own glow stick type of devices. Herbert Richter and Ruth Tedrick were also a part of the first inventors of the glow sticks that we all know and love. But first thing first you must know how glow stick emit light in the first place?
How we get light.
To learn how glow sticks work you must first know how light is created. When an electron absorbs energy the electron will jump up in to another energy level. As the electron relaxes back into the original ene...

... from entertainment to military and just about everything in between but would they be good for a main light source?
Would Glow sticks work for a light Source.
Even though glow sticks are great for halloween and play capture the flag in the dark. They are not very good for a permanent light source. Glow stick may emit light but the light does not last longer than twelve hours. Also the temperature effects glow sticks the hot the temperature the brighter but short the glow, the colder the temperature the longer but dimmer the glow. Another problem with glow sticks as the main source is that you can not turn off glow stick you must wait tell the chemical reaction is done.Plus you would need a lot of glow sticks and a lot of time to break each glow stick. So would glow stick work for a permanent light source. The answer is no it is not a good main light source for me.
Instead, most of his inventions were made using electrical energy. In 1878 he dedicated almost two and half years of his life to invent incandescent electric lighting. He was granted a patent for the famous light bulb in 1880. That same year he founded the Edison Illuminating Company and then left Menlo Park to travel around the globe. He visited different cities, offering his consultation services to local union councils and electrical companies on how to implement electrical systems.
Around 1902, when luminol was first synthesized, scientists noticed that it exhibited a blue glow in the presence of other compounds. Later on, it was found that the luminol reaction occurred in the presence of blood. Its use in crime scenes was first implemented by German forensic scientist Walter Specht in 1937. When the luminol solution is sprayed, the iron present in hemoglobin in blood catalyzes the reaction to produce a blue glow.
Charles F. Brush and the Invention of the Arc Light. Charles Francis Brush is a well-known inventor from Euclid, Ohio. He lived from 1849-1929. Throughout his life he invented many electrical machines and gadgets. These inventions included the electric arc light.
The Radium Luminous Material Corporation was founded in 1914 (renamed in 1921 to the United States Radium Corporation) by Dr. Sabin Arnold von Sochocky and Dr. George S. Willis becoming the first U.S. company to produce radioluminescent paint. The paint used by this particular company was the trademarked "Undark", invented by William J. Hammer through mixing radium, zinc sulfide and glue with the help from Marie and Pierre Currie and Henri Becquerel. The corporation hired hundreds of women having no trouble finding employees, being one of the few companies at the time to hire women. Business was surging with the defense contract obtained by filling the demand during World War I by making equipment for soldiers luminescent, enabling reading at night. The company even marketed other i...
Glow sticks were first made in the 1960s when a scientist, Edwin Chandross tried to copy fireflies. He thought it was fascinating how they gave off a natural light. He made the first glow stick from oxalyl chloride and hydrogen peroxide. Since Edwin’s invention many scientist after made improvements to the invention. The United States Navy worked on creating glow sticks independently and received a patent in 1973. Glow sticks started to become popular in the 1980s and since then are still very popular today. The largest glow stick was made in 2009 and was 8ft 4 inches tall. Glow sticks can be used for entertainment when dancing they are very popular for raves, parties, night clubbing, special events etc. glow sticks are the safest light sources in emergencies, They are used because they are very efficient and do not require any batteries or electricity. Glow sticks are portable and waterproof can bear high pressure situations and that is why military forces and campers use them and have them on hand.
One of these new innovations is glow in the dark road markings. This new technology uses solar power obtained from the road throughout the day to “charge” the photo-luminising powder that is the glow in the dark. Expensive lighting will be replaced with this more cost efficient option that can glow for up to eight hours a night. This innovation can already be found on the N329 highway in Oss, Netherlands.
Controlling chemiluminescent light was how Omniglow Incorporated became the first company to produce light sticks. In 1986, when the first light stick was invented, scientists thought they could make a lot of money selling light sticks. However, since they had to make light sticks by hand, it was harder for them to produce very many of them. Until machines were invented to make light sticks, it cost too much money to make them by hand.
During the ancient civilisation, candles were made from tallow, or animal fat, extracted from cattle and sheep. The first candles were developed by the ancient Egyptians. These candles, known as rushlights or torches, had no wicks and burned slowly. The Romans were credited for the first creation of candles with wicks, the ones that resembled the candles that are used today.
Thomas Edison is also an inventor. He invented a lightbulb that banished the darkness. In the video it shows that Thomas Edison invented the lightbulb which was the first lightbulb. This shows that Thomas Edison invented something that changed the world by banishing the darkness, so just like the first telephone and the even better telephones changed the world by banishing the silence because people can now talk for hours without going anywhere. Also in the video, Thomas Edison invented something that not only changed the world but benefited all. This proves that the lightbulb is a product that lets everybody see in the dark. So now inventors try to invent something that would change the world and also benefits
He worked with George Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla during the late 19th century so bring electric lighting into houses and offices. Incandescent lighting is when light is produced by heat. Around 1870s, there was already lighting called arc lighting. Those were placed in large indoor rooms such as a stage and outdoors in streetlight lamps. Arc light was proven to be impractical in housing or offices. During the 1879, Edison did research in an entire electrical systems which would deal with a generator, a distribution system, and a light bulb. His main focus though was the light bulb. It needed to be strong enough so that the heat wouldn 't cause the light bulb to explode. He worked with carbon filaments which burned inside a glass globe as electricity flowed through the filaments. During the same year, Edison worked with Francis Upton to make a generator that produced direct current, which is also what Edison is very well known for. Direct current was used for incandescent
Electricity was first tested by Benjamin Franklin with his famous kite and lighting experiment (http://www.ushistory.org/franklin/info/kite.htm). Before the kite experiment, he had a lightning rod setup on the top of his house for electrical experimentations. (http://www.ushistory.org/franklin/info/kite.htm). After Franklin, Thomas Edison created light for our homes and businesses, and it was the beginning of great advancements in the electrical industry. Not only did he create the light bulb, but he also invented the microphone, electric pen, telephone receiver, storage battery, and many other inventions before his death. Edison had 1,093 inventions that helped revolutionize of what is today known as electricity (http://www.fi.edu/learn/sci-tech/edison-lightbulb/edison-lightbulb.php?cts=electricity).
In 1879, after spending $40,000, and performing 1,200 experiments, he succeeded. He made a light bulb using carbonized filaments from cotton thread. Carbonized thread is ordinary cotton sewing thread that has been burned to an ash. The light bulb burned for two days. The electric light took the greatest amount of time and required the most complicated experiments of all his experiments.
Most people don't know where the idea of the laser came from. The idea for the laser came from a machine called a maser. The maser was a tool that was able to strengthen, or amplify radio and light waves. The first laser was made in California in 1960. It was built by Theodore Maiman along with a group of American scientists. The material they used for a concentrator was a man- made ruby. This was done by, coiling a simple flash tube around a rod, and beaming powerful flashes of light at it. The result was pulses of red laser light. Once they made the device they had to name it. They had think of some word or words to described it. They came up with Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Using the first letter of each main word they named it laser. The laser had everyone excited.
He starts to investigate how to create a light bulb that can last longer. Before Thomas Edison started making the light bulb, there were other inventors working on it, but no one could let the light bulb work longer. Eventually, on October 21, 1879, Thomas Edison’s light bulbs could work for forty hours. Thomas Edison and his team try to use the incandescent light bulb in the laboratory and at home. In 1880, Thomas Edison believed the incandescent bulbs could be produced and sold to the public.
Thomas Alva Edison is a very well-known American inventor. He invented about 1093 devices that influenced us greatly, such as light bulb, microphone, telephone receiver, universal stock ticker, phonograph, kinetoscope (used to view moving pictures), storage battery, electric pen, and mimeograph. Edison also improved many other existing devices as well. In the period from 1878 to 1880, Thomas Edison began serious research into developing a practical incandescent lamp. Edison and his associates worked on at least three thousand different theories to develop an efficient incandescent lamp. In 1878, Edison built his first high resistance incandescent electric light. Incandescent lamps make light by using electricity to heat a thin strip of material (called a filament) until it gets hot enough to glow. Many inventors had tried to perfect incandescent lamps to "sub-divide" electric light or make it smaller and weaker than it was in the existing arc lamps, which were too bright to be used for small spaces such as the rooms of a house.Edison's lamp would consist of a filament ho...
