Girl’s water polo increases confidence in young women through controlled physical violence. For the first few weeks of drills, new members exchange “I’m sorry” or “please don’t hurt me.” Every movement, from an overhand throw to a breaststroke kick, is restrained for fear of overexerting themselves. The girls hesitate to engage in close contact to practice defense and offense. Fortunately, the awkwardness of physical proximity soon fades along with their fear. They realize that injuries are inevitable in the rough sport. However, that does not mean any player is intending to harm them. By their first real game, they no longer hold back. During games, these women single-mindedly work to block their opponent’s shot and discreetly shove players who are dragging them underwater. As long as they follow the rules and act in the spirit of the game, the women are encouraged by their coach to fight for every goal. By the end of the season, they no longer apologize for minor mishaps. They play with ferocity, ready to tackle any bruises and …show more content…
For the first few weeks of close contact drills, the only words said between new teammates are “I’m sorry” and “don’t hurt me.” Their movements, from swinging their arms to throw to kicking their legs to stay afloat, are stilted for fear of pulling a muscle. After weeks of practice, the girls realize that injuries are inevitable. No one intends to harm them. Soon, they no longer hold back their strength. During games, these women tear through the water to block their opponent’s shot and discreetly shove players who drag them underwater. As long as they act fairly and uphold the spirit of the game, the women are encouraged by their coach to fight for every pass, every goal. By the end of the season, the only words exchanged in drills are “awesome shot!” and “pass to me!” They swim freely, showing off their bruises as the mark of a great
Hult explains that in the era between 1890-1920, women physical educators were a tightly knit, dedicated group committed to a tradition of restricted competition, self-governance, and a feminine approach to individual and team sports. They believed that all girls and women should have the opportunity to participate and enjoy sport, not only the talented elite as in the competition-driven male philosophical structure (87). Play-days and sport-days with emphasis on team building games were a means of perpetuating an image of an ideal American female athlete: feminine, beautiful, strong, yet always 'aware of her delicate reproductive system' (89).
The following commissioned report was compiled for the Health Studies Faculty of Brisbane Girls Grammar. The purpose of this report is to evaluate the nature of women’s sport, not only in society, but also at the Brisbane Girls Grammar School.
To satisfy the competitive urge of their students, physical educators held “Play Days” and “Sport Days” for their female students. In a play day, teams from institutions did not play each other, but were comb...
In 1970 only 1 in 27 girls participated in high school sports, today that ratio is 1 in 3. Sports are a very important part of the American society. Within sports heroes are made, goals are set and dreams are lived. The media makes all these things possible by creating publicity for the rising stars of today. Within society today, the media has downplayed the role of the woman within sports. When the American people think of women in sports, they think of ice skating, field hockey and diving. People don’t recognize that women have the potential to play any sport that a Man can play, with equal skill, if not better.
Intro - Prue Gilbert who is a human rights lawyer from Melbourne once stated in an article; “Last year I was driving my then five year old son to a birthday party, and we inevitably started talking about his own upcoming birthday party. A football party, Dad can be umpire, Ned can be captain and we can all eat hotdogs” Then is next comment stopped me. “and all the girls can be the crowd”
The average speed of an indoor field hockey ball, when drag flicking, is upwards of 75 miles per hour. Avoiding the ball every time is almost impossible. Taking a ball to the head has the potential to shatter bones, or cause a serious brain injury. Dating back before ancient Olympic Games, field hockey is one of the oldest competitive sports; it has evolved tremendously since then. During ancient times, field hockey was considered too dangerous for women. Today, women play this thrilling game using stiff, composite, slightly curved sticks that range primarily from 35 to 39 inches long to hit a hard, plastic ball. For protection, all players must wear a mouth guard and shin guards. Many players choose to wear gloves, too, but they are not required. Over many years and numerous rule changes, women’s indoor field hockey has become a dangerous, yet exhilarating and fast-paced game. To play, each team uses six players at a time, usually five field players and a goalkeeper. Moving the ball down the field while keeping the ball on the ground is a huge challenge, but scoring and defending are, by far, the most important tasks of field hockey. Once near the goal, players are allowed to flick the ball into the air to try to hit the ball into the goal. Generally a passing game, it is likely that sticks will be high, and the ball always moves fast. In indoor field hockey, face masks should be required, to reduce external injuries, to prevent internal injuries, and to decrease liability for injury for the coaches and the venue.
The number of girls and women participating in all levels of sports has risen greatly in recent years, and the way they play has changed too. Women's sports used to be played by a slow defensive style. Today, the sports are played with speed, precision, and power. With these changes have come increased injuries, and female athletes have higher injury rates than men in many sports. Knee injuries have been rising in female sports. Anterior crutiate ligament (ACL) injuries have become the most common injury in the knee to female athletes. Females are four times more susceptible to injury then men.
As the soccer ball was rolling out of bounds, I felt my opponent right on my back. In that moment, I would not have guessed that the next year would drastically change seconds later. My leg gave out as I heard a heart breaking pop and fell to the ground. Over 250,000 Americans tear their Anterior Cruciate Ligaments (ACL) each year, myself included. Female athletes are eight times more susceptible to tear their ACL as a result of physiological and anatomic differences. Building up specific muscles around the knee can diminish the amount of strain on the knee. Therefore, female athletes should participate in strength programs to target reducing the risk of a life changing injury.
Media plays a large role in affecting peoples thinking, opinions, ideas, etc. In essence media can shape our thinking into negative views and perspectives that are typically not true. Sometimes the media plays as a puppet master to society. Specifically, the inequity of the gender roles within sports causes for a stir in commotion that calls for some attention. In doing so the inadequate misuse of media towards women in sports causes low exposure, amongst many other things. On the other hand their male counterparts are on the other end of the success spectrum. Because of this noticeable difference, it is vital that action is taken place to level out equality within sports. Due to the power of media, it is believed that a change in media coverage
The sport of soccer has overcome many changes through the years. In particular, women’s soccer compared to men’s soccer has gained much notoriety. The widespread knowledge of soccer has spread throughout numerous countries. Soccer began as primarily a men’s sport, but today soccer is considered a sport that both genders participate in. Women’s soccer has changed dramatically over the years with the increase in popularity as well as new style and rules of the game.
In the world of female soccer, players are often faced with many different forms of sexism, most notably the unequal pay between male and female players. But the wage gap between the genders is not the only manner of prejudice that they face while playing. Studies have shown that female soccer players are less likely to overplay their injuries, unlike their male counterparts. This finding could be explained in part because of the general socialization that young women face, like Carol Gilligan’s claim that through our society’s socialization of women, the ideal women is supposed to be calm and controlled. The attempt that women make to fight back against the gender roles that were imposed upon them as young children could also be a contributing factor in the sense
The water polo sport industry is rather a very lackluster business. Although USA water polo has recently received to some public attention from its silver medal in Beijing, it has remained a forgotten sport. This is perhaps due to the lack of professional teams in the US and/or lack of a strong youth national development programs. Although water polo may be the most intensive and exhausting sports ever conceived, the water polo family always manages to hang on in some shape or form. As a water polo player myself, I see that my pathways to professional success is very limited as there is very narrow road. Many professional water polo players in the US hold second jobs and relegate to a coaching position to fuel their passions. However, the excess of water polo coaches concentrated in the senior high level creates an extreme bottleneck as most water polo seniors graduate without a future scholarship or career in line. The bottleneck traps many professional water polo players in a dire financial situation while leaving behind amateur players.
Do You know how or what changed women’s sports forever? The sport basketball, gave opportunity and hope to girls all over the world. And this is how it all began…
The two team’s caps are different colors from each other, as well as the goalkeeper usually have different color caps from their own team as well. A game of water polo starts when the players on each team line up on their goal line with their heads touching the line. A player from each team (located at the side where the ball is dropped) sprints down to get the ball. After the ball is caught by one of the players, the ball can be moved by being thrown/passed down the pool or carried with one hand. Each offense (one team trying to score on the other) has a limited amount of time, 30 seconds, their attack can last.
Few girls are really interested in athletic events. This is a false statement, because many girls are excited by athletic events for different reasons. Some girls enjoy sporting events because it provides an opportunity to spend time with friends. Others may like sporting events because they admire a certain player. However, athletic events branch out into multiple categories. Some ladies use athletic events as a way to stay in shape. A few may do so for a cause; like running for breast cancer
