A case study of the faculty of engineering at the University of Zimbabwe

CHAPTER 1:

Introduction
Education has become the pillar of many vibrant and successful societies. Women have however lagged behind in the quest for knowledge and this has created a great gulf between the success of men and women. Women have generally been looked down upon in the education sector more so in tertiary institutions. Only recently back have women been recognized as equal counterparts in issues to do with education. According to Bunyi (2003) on attainment of independence, many newly established African countries depended heavily on their tertiary education systems to provide the much-needed ‘manpower’ to take up roles leadership of development efforts. The use of the term ‘manpower’ in reference to the human resource development role of the tertiary education sector in the early post-independence period underscores the historical male dominance of these institutions which symbolized the colonial model on which they were based. Tertiary institutions were expected to educate and train males to replace departing male colonial civil servants. As such, female enrolment in these institutions was not at the centre of the thinking in governments or in the institutions themselves.

2.3 The review process
The review process is a combination of written works and research that are related to the study. The internet has served as a great resource because access to information is easier and faster. Gender has become a topical issue and material of relevance is not hard to come by on the internet. Journals have proved of use in the process of collecting existing literature. The review process also uses country reports done by prominent organizations like branches from the United Nations. The use of work and research done by Zimbabwean scholars like Rudo Gaidzanwa and other African scholars has proved indispensible as they discuss gender in the African context which is relevant to the study.
