1. Introduction
Friction stir welding is a solid state welding process; this remarkable up-gradation of friction welding was invented in 1991 in The Welding Institute [1]. Figure 1 shows the schematic representation of the Friction Stir Welding process. The process starts with clamping the plates to be welded to a backing plate, so that the plates do not fly away during the welding process. A rotating wear resistant tool is plunged on the interface between the plates to a predetermined depth and moved forward in the interface between the plates to form the weld. The external tool has a probe and shoulder which stirs the material to be joined and forges the surface. FSW comes together with forging and extrusion processes. The probe and shoulder extrudes the material by stirring and the shoulder alone forges the material surface to be joined.
Friction Stir Welding facilitates welding of plate to plate joints for several applications. This process is chosen for the welding of AA 6082-T6 (Al-Mg-Si alloy) of various thicknesses. Welding is a very important job in today’s society. With new building designs, and bridges to every day metal products, welders are needed to do these tasks. Almost everything that you use every day has some sort of weld to it.
Welding can be traced back to the ancient times. One of the earliest methods of welding is bronze age. when ancient people back then had small gold circular were made by pressured welding lap joined together. Then in the Iron Age the Egyptians and people in the eastern area learned to weld pieces of iron together. In the middle age blacksmithing was developed. Blacksmithing is when you weld a piece of metal and hammering it but it was in the 19 century that welding was invented as they know it today.
I have researched welding as a career and the time it requires to receive your certification is less than a four year college degree. The cost for the training is also significantly more affordable than a four year college degree and there is opportunity to earn an above average wage enabling you to live a comfortable lifestyle . Welding looks like a good starting point for me. Even though I’m still not exactly sure what career I want to do, welding is something I enjoy, and I can see myself doing this to support myself.
Welding takes just as much time to learn and perfect just as if you where in a science class or on a football team. With welding you have to know how to work all machines and work several other things. Plus, welding is a very dangerous job. You can get cut, burned, blinded or blown up. The most difficult part about welding is learning how to work different machines. In welding there are eight different types of welding. There is Oxy fuel welding, Shielding metal arch welding (SMAW), Gas tungsten arch welding (GTAW), Gas metal arch welding (GMAW), Flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), Submerged arch welding (SAW), Electroslag welding (ESW), and Electric resistance welding (ERW). I have not failed many times in welding but some things I have struggled with and have had trouble with were my straightness in my beads, dealing with the guys, and my leg length. When I do not do something correctly I usually do not take failure as an option.
