Paige DeVary Mrs. Dickson AP English and Composition January 25, 2014 Foster Care Foster care is supervised care for delinquent or neglected children usually in an institution or substitute home. There are many people involved upon placing a neglected child in the foster care system. The children are assigned a social worker who is responsible for a child to have a place to sleep every night. Although the government has this system set up to help children, there are a bountiful amount of flaws in the system, affecting the children in a negative way or circumstance. Due to “ageing out” adolescents are leaving their foster homes and are not able to become fully independent due to their lack of child development , emotional necessities , and lack of stability. A lack of child development can be caused through physical abuse which can include severe harm to an adolescent through violence involving kicking, hitting, burning, cutting or any other act that may leave a visible mark on a child’s body. Emotional abuse is trauma to a child in which they are open to a world of shame and humiliation instead of their parents of legal guardian loving, supporting, encouraging, and caring for them they are humiliated with excessively severe criticism, unnecessary isolation, causing severe guilt and causing fear or terror. Also Sexual abuse can often fall under both physical and emotional abuse due to the experience of multiple traumas. Furthermore all of the abuse leads to a lack of child development, and child development is a major and critical step needed to become an adult which for most children in the United States is eighteen and that age is for teenagers whom are believed to be capable of supporting themselves in this world ,but the chi... ... middle of paper ... ...or hurting more children. They are yanked from the family they know and the ways they know how to live even through the abuse or actions they are punished for.is this system truly helping these kids. Wouldn’t most be better off in their homes or with a legal guardian. Why hasn’t the government fixed this issue around America how are the adolescents in the foster care system held to such high expectations of mentally being prepared for the outside world at eighteen when their simple nurture needed was not provided? Now this child or adolescent is expected to live on through life just fine and not fall into their parents mistakes but how are they supposed to when they have been moved around nonstop and then with the lack of child development and emotional needs. One person couldn’t imagine what it’s like to walk in the shoes of a foster child in certain circumstances.
