Most people have their own definition or idea of what they believe femininity and masculinity means to them. Some developed their definition from things they see or hear. Namely, children can develop a meaning of masculinity or femininity based on what their parents say and how they interact with one another. More simply, parents are the first people to demonstrate or mold masculinity and femininity to their children. In addition, school can have an influence on how people interpret femininity and masculinity. Mostly, their peers and teachers will have an impact on how they believe one should show maleness or femaleness. Most fathers demonstrate masculinity, by providing a home for his wife and children. Showing children that men are supposed to work and provide for the family will make children believe masculinity is having financial stability. Namely, boys will believe masculinity is being independent, while girl will believe it means being able to provide. In addition, most mother demonstrate femininity by cooking, cleaning, and catering to her children and her husband. Seeing women display nurturing and supportive behavior will make girls believe femininity is being a mother and wife. While boys will believe women are supposed to be caregivers. Furthermore, parents show children that people can display femininity and masculinity in their appearance. For instance, most women wear dresses, skirts, and makeup. From the individual level to a national and global scale, certain tasks and activities legitimize the gender and define the identity of men and women. Traditionally, the culturally specific behaviors of men comprise masculinity while those of women constitute femininity (Connell, Masculinities 68-69). In many cultures, masculinity and femininity exist in a hierarchy, with masculinity being superior to femininity. The terms can be even further stratified, as some forms of masculinity and femininity are preferable to others (Moss 2). Sociologists often consider the most lauded masculinity in a particular culture to be hegemonic, or dominant, and this image of maleness becomes the ideal for men in that society (Moss 2). Although the concept of masculinity is constantly evolving, one activity that is often intertwined with the hegemonic form is the practice of sport (Brandt and Carsens 233). Similar to the evolution of masculinity, athletic events have changed greatly over the years. Originally, only males participated in sports, but today a diverse group of individuals can part in a variety of sports from the local to a professional level. However, despite the growing involvement of women in sports, sports media perpetuates a hegemonic masculinity by selectively covering male sports and by emphasizing the bodily performance and sexuality of male athletes.
The clusters of social definitions used to identify persons by gender are collectively known as “femininity” and “masculinity.” Masculine characteristics are used to identify persons as males, while feminine ones are used as signifiers for femaleness. People use femininity or masculinity to claim and communicate their membership in their assigned, or chosen, sex or gender. Others recognize our sex or gender more on the basis of these characteristics than on the basis of sex characteristics, which are usually largely covered by clothing in daily life.
According to Kimmel, the earliest embodiments of American manhood were landowners, independent artisans, shopkeepers, and farmers. During the first decade of the nineteenth century, the industrial revolution started to influence the way, American men thought of themselves. The way individuals discipline their body is analogous to how they act towards the idea of power and status. How bodies are trained to emit gender distinctions is similar to how people tend to clothe their bodies. The way people tend to “sit, stand, gesture, walk, and throw” are different depending on their performance of masculinity or femininity (Martin 297). Women’s bodies tend to be more “confined, their movements restricted (Martin 297).” The term “femininity” defines the idea that the female sex is perceived with specific traits and characteristics. Crossing their legs, sitting up straight, having a softer voice and light footsteps are all ways in which women become naturally embedded to the gender norms. She is ascribed to be more gentle, nurturing, and emotional, and weak. These traits she attains are given by society the moment she is born, creating an idealized sexually more inferior identity than that of a male. By analyzing the socially constructed gender profile of men, it is easy to see how society creates a more dominant and powerful facade. They are stereotyped to being more aggressive, highly sexual, strong, competitive, emotionless, and in control. These socially constructed differences confines males and females to particular character profiles that limit their equality as a whole. The bodies are gendered “as a product of social doing; constituted through interaction (West and Zimmerman 175).” The way male and female establish their gender order in society correlates to their mentality as a whole. Overall masculinity is more valued than femininity in society. Masculinity correlates to gender privilege. An inequality that gives males the access to more power, resources and positions due to the traditional notions of gender roles. As a child develops, their surroundings have a major influence on the rest of their lives; if boys are taught to “man up” or never to do something “like a girl”, they will become men in constant fear of not being masculine enough. Through elementary and middle school ages, boys are taught that a tough, violent, strong, in-control man is the ideal in society and they beat themselves up until they reach that ideal. Gender is the psychological characteristics and social categories that are created by human culture. Doing gender is the concept that humans express their gender when they interact with one another. Messages about how a male or female is supposed to act come from many different places. Schools, parents, and friends can influence a person. Another major factor that influences millions of impressionable females and males is television. Not only does the television teach each sex how to act, it also shows how one sex should expect the other sex to act. In the current television broadcasting, stereotypical behavior goes from programming for the very small to adult audiences. In this broadcasting range, females are portrayed as motherly, passive and innocent, sex objects, or they are overlooked completely or seen as unimportant entities.
Gender, on the other hand, refers to the sociological differences between male and female. This teaches males and females to behave in various ways due to socialisation (Browne, 1998). Everyone starts making interpretations of the strengths and weaknesses based on one’s gender. Whereas, females are judged as expensive and very fashionable. Males and females both differ in their abilities and their enjoyments.
