When we talk about ethics there will forever be differences in options, this largely due to the fact that ethics are very subjective. Ethics are moral values or moral behaviors; these can often be perceived differently depending on the individual. Due to ethics not being so black and white there leaves space for people to stray away and interpret them to suit their needs.
Business ethics or Organizational ethics can be less subjective. The world is constantly evolving and developing, on the contrast rules of ethical thinking have transcended over time. Expectations of how individuals should conduct when being part of an organization are generally very ubiquitous.
Ethical behavior can be influenced by peoples own personal perceptions. Sources on which one bases ethic are different for everyone, religion, values, and cultural differences can all be factors that shape ethics. Values influence an individual’s affective and behavioral responses in the workplace since these core values , attitudes, beliefs differ from one cultural group to another and are associated with the persons learned behaviors .(McMurray, A., & Scott, D. (2013).Cultural differences can influence someone’s approach , and commitment to their jobs. Most companies now days operate on an International level, and so employees are located all over the world and all come from different walks on life.
Over the years many organizations have made headlines with unethical scandals of fraud, theft, deceit, and harassment. ...hough people are in their right to have their standard of ethics on how lead their private lives, when working within an organization, all employees should be held accountable to follow appropriate standards set by an organization as long as its within reason of course. Managers and employees at all levels have to be mindful about ethical behavior. Even if companies are not strict about following their code of ethics, questionable behavior can be a slippery slope that can lead to termination or in extremes, jail time. Having ethical leadership is important in fostering trust in the organization. Running on appropriate ethical behavior in business means that people aspire to work for you, with you, and ensures future growth. Leaders who treat their employees with fairness, honesty, and provide frequent, accurate information are seen as more effective. According to Robbins and Judge (2014), “trust is a primary attribute associated with leadership and followers who trust a leader are confident their rights and interest will not be abused” (p.193). The old General Motor Corporation had eleven different CEO’s from 1923 until 2009 each with their own unique leadership style, which directed employees toward the organization goals. Unfortunately, many of the top level managers under the CEO’s had the tendency of filtering out information that did not match up with their pre-conceived notions about a particular issue and they lacked upward communication. One consumer goal of General Motors was to build trust in the company so people would be repeat customers, but building trust between employees and establishing an ethical culture was not a top priority of the organization. Goal directed leadership alone is important, but differs from a structure of leadership based on ethics. It is important to note, that effective leadership may not be the same as leadership founded on ethical principles. Business competence must exist, along with personal leadership accountability in ethical decisions. Ethics are influence from many demographics which include family influences, peer influences, past experiences, religion, and situations. People decide whether something is ethical and whether or not it is right or wrong based on these influences. Individuals decide whether something is ethical or unethical based on family influences because people absorb about the ethical status or something family members based on how our families act. Also individuals also conduct their decisions based on peer influences because classmates and friends that surround us, usually impact a person’s believes on what is right or wrong overtime. Furthermore, people also resolve to their decisions on whether something is right or wrong established on past experiences because they predict their benefits on demographics that had happened to them in the past. Additionally, people select some decisions based on religion because a person’s religious beliefs will usually inspire he or she on what is right or wrong. Finally, another way people base their ethical decisions is based on the situations they are in because people sometimes change their beliefs depending on the circumstances they are in.
Question of morality is a controversial one and usually occurs when things take a turn for the worse. What do people considered being morally right and what is morally wrong? Does law dictate it or do we follow ethics? Where people believe that there is not other solution but to commit a deed that can ultimately lead to destruction, question of faith and sometimes death. Each person has his or her very own opinion of what is deemed moral and what is not.
Ethical behavior is behavior that a person considers appropriate. A person’s moral principles are shaped from birth, and developed over time throughout the person’s life. There are many factors that can influence what a person believes is right, or what is wrong. Some factors are a person’s family, religious beliefs, culture, and experiences. In business, it is of great importance for an employee to understand how to act ethically to prevent a company from being sued, and receiving criticism from the public while bringing in profits for the company.
There is a very close relationship between ethics and values. Values can be described as convictions about what is good or desirable. Differences in people’s values are due to a variety of factors culture, religion, climate, social and economic status, personal experiences, age, gender and a host of other factors can all have an impact on our values. These differences lead to differences in ethical judgement that we typically find among people. Although they are closely related they cannot be equated to each other as our values don’t have to be ethical. This brings me onto my next point of.
Every individual has certain values and ethics that he/she stands by. Values give us a sense of what is important while ethics gives us a sense of what is right and wrong. Together, these qualities help guide us through our everyday life: what actions to take and what decision to make. Sticking to ethical standards allows you to stay clear of trouble; therefore, strengthening people’s trust in you. In return, this leads to gaining people’s respect and cooperation, which may result in leadership responsibilities. Therefore, we believe that personal values and ethics will affect a person’s career success. Ethical standards that evolved over the history of Western civilization deal with interpersonal relationships. What is right or wrong? What one should do and not do when dealing with other people. Ethical behavior in a business environment has not been as clearly defined. When businesses were small and the property of a few individuals, traditional ethical standards were applied to meet different situations. However, as businesses became larger, the interpersonal ethical relations did not provide any clear behavioral guidelines. Likewise, the principles of ethical relationships were even less pertinent to the corporate environments.
Organizations are constantly tested with various moral and ethical problems and dilemmas. Organizational leaders are the key to establishing an ethical climate in the workplace. By understanding and improving their own moral reasoning, and the biases that affect moral judgment, they enable themselves to make better decisions. This has a catalytic effect that positively increases organizational climate, ultimately improving all organizational behavior.
Business ethics are a set of moral rules that govern how a business operates, how people should be treated within an organization, and how business decisions are made. They are a crucial part of employment and in managing a sustainable business, mainly because of the serious consequences that can result from decisions made with a lack of regard to ethics. Even if you don’t believe that good ethics don’t contribute to profit levels, you should realize those poor ethics have a negative effect on your bottom line in the long-run. Every business in every industry has certain guidelines to which its employees must stick to, and regularly outline such aspects in employee handbooks.
Ethical theories are a way of finding solutions to ethical dilemmas using moral reasoning or moral character. The overall classification of ethical theories involves finding a resolution to ethical problems that are not necessarily answered by laws or principles already in place but that achieve justice and allow for individual rights. There are many different ethical theories and each takes a different approach as to the process in which they find a resolution. Ethical actions are those that increase prosperity, but ethics in business is not only focused on actions, it can also involve consequences of actions and a person’s own moral character.
Ethics in the Workplace "Ethics are personal and, at the same time, a very public display of your attitudes and beliefs. Poor ethics can damage their career, happiness, and quality of life. Not only can these actions hurt the individual who has made the bad choices, but also most often it hurts the innocent.

Ethics is the responsibility of each individual person, but starts with the CEO and the Board of Directors, setting the right tone at the top and moves down through the organization, including setting the tone in the middle. A company’s culture and ethic standards start at the top, not from the bottom. Employees will almost always behave in the manner that they think management expects them, and it is foolish for management to pretend otherwise (Scudder).
