Emerson believes that a person must not care about laws in order to be a hero. However, there are multiple instances where a hero is a hero because they are fighting against certain laws that they view as unjust. Martin Luther King Jr, Gandhi, and Abraham Lincoln show that today’s heroes are fighting against the laws and therefore, contrary to Emerson’s belief, are heros because the laws motivated their actions. Martin Luther King Jr. fought against racial segregation. He was dissatisfied with the rules of the time that put to shame his race. The laws had forced black people to drink from different water fountains, go to different schools, and use different bathrooms. He is famous for his “I have a dream” speech, which would not have happened if the laws had no influence on his actions. Emerson states that the laws do not have any part in a hero’s decisions, but all of what makes today’s society believe that MLK Jr. is a hero is the fact that he fought against the laws. Emerson’s statement cannot be applied to all of the people whom society views as a hero. …show more content…

His name itself shows that he’s a hero. Mahatma means great soul, which means that people believe that he is a hero just by the title they gave him. He let the laws influence his actions in a similar way to MLK Jr. Gandhi wanted to break away from, and he did that by having non-violent protests. By having his protests be non-violent, he acknowledged the laws. One of his most famous movements was the salt march. He was protesting the british imposed tax on salt, and so instead, he walked to the dead sea to make his own salt. Gandhi’s entire movement was based upon breaking away from British rule, and by doing so, he had to be conscious of what the laws
