Social networking has been affecting Americans for a very long time. Ever since the creation of the internet, many social networking sites were created which began to affect us. Social networking websites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and AOL had made the biggest impact on Americans. All these websites lead to an increase in cyber bullying. In the early 1900’s many different types of computers and parts to a computer were invented. For example, in 1936, Konrad Zuse made the first freely programmable computer. Seven years later, John Atanasoff & Clifford Berry invented the ABC Computer. Later on, in 1962, Steven Russell & MIT created the first computer game “Spacewar Computer Game”. Two years later, Douglas Engelbart was the one to invent the computer mouse and windows. This was a major invention because now many people were able to use the computer easily and in that time period, faster.
From inventions of different parts of the computer; many people began to invent the internet and different social networking sites. In 1969, CompuServe was the first major Internet service provider in the United States. In 1971, Ray Tomlinson was the first person to invent and send an email. Ray decided to create “email” because “it seemed like a neat idea.” He started to try out different websites to get the right program to send an email. “Social media, a web-based and mobile technology, has turned communication into a social dialogue, and dominates the younger generation and their culture. As of 2010, Generation Y now outnumbers Baby Boomers, and 96% of Gen Y has joined a social network” (Qualman 1). Social media now accounts for the number one use of the Internet, and this percentage is rising bigger every day (Qualman). Putting personal information into the hands of a stranger is risky outside of the Internet, but even more so online. The ease and speed of the mobility of information means no information is safe on Facebook. Anyone who can see it can copy, save, or redistribute the information at will. A broad and deep aggregate source of information makes search and retrieval of anything posted on Facebook quick and easy. If somebody wants information about you they know how and where to look. Finally, this information can be passed along and analyzed in order to draw conclusions about you and your lifestyle. These can be stereotypical and false. Facebook and other social media sites, and more broadly information technology in general has greatly impacted our lives and our right to privacy.
Social media or cancer? Just like cancer, social media slowly withers away people’s brains, especially in teenagers, when they consume almost everything they read. Social media has grown exponentially while attracting the young minds of teens and molding them without teens knowing. They latch on to things that they feel comfortable with, because they are still trying to find who they really are. Today, social media is used by almost every teenager in America. Sites like Twitter, Instagram, Vine, Snapchat, and Facebook can affect them in a negative way, making them feel worse about themselves or even changing who they really are. Social media can seem harmless to many teens, but it can actually hurt them and cause mental health issues.
New technologies have always been demonised as causes of social disruption, but they are better thought of as amplifiers of existing social and cultural concerns (Meilke & Young, 2012). Facebook is merely a popular tool that users are utilising to connect digitally; it does not necessarily mean that Facebook is creating new problems.
