As soon as a drug addicted baby is born they will face many problems and suffer through pain. The pain would be caused because of drug withdrawal, in which the mom would understand. Drug Addicted babies don’t choose the life that they are given based off of their mothers choices made during the pregnancy. So, we should try and prevent this from happening to other babies and help the mothers with their drug addiction. While pregnant a women can risk harm to their unborn child when they abuse drugs. The amount of harm would depend on the type of drug, the severity of the drug and the amount of time the drug was used while the baby was developing. Not only are any type of drugs harmful to the baby but as well as prescribed drugs. Prescription drugs can be harmful towards both the mother and the baby. Prescription Drug Abuse occurs when the mother takes the drugs without being subscribed to her or because she takes high doses than what she is supposed to take.

Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome occurs when a baby is exposed to drugs in the womb before birth. The drugs and other substances that the mother takes will pass through the placenta which connects the baby to its mother in the womb. Babies with NAS will start to show symptoms after 1-3 days after they are born. Some symptoms that they can have are: excessive crying, hyperactive reflexes, and trembling. Treatment for Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome is available and it can last from 1 week to 6 months. Even after they are done with treatment the baby will need “TLC” (Tender Loving Care). During this process a drug is prescribed to an infant similar to the one the mother used during the pregnancy in which they will slowly decrease the dose over time. This will help wean the baby off the drug and will help relieve some withdrawal
