As stated in Addressing the Oliphant in the Room: Domestic Violence and the safety of American Indian and Alaska Native Children in Indian Country “The National Congress of American Indians declared violence against Native Americans, particularly those living on tribal lands, as the most critical issue faced by Native Americans.” What are the causes of domestic violence on reservations? This is an important issue because domestic violence is a huge issue on reservations and being aware of the causes can play an important role in helping to lower domestic violence rates and give less of a stigma on the stereotypes against Native Americans. Domestic violence includes, physical abuse, sexual abuse as well as psychological abuse, including a combination of all of these. The domestic violence is not limited to only certain tribes, but is common among many tribes all across the United States. Rural isolation is the result of the American Government’s expansion forcing Native Americans to move. According to American Indian Poverty in the Contemporary United States, the U.S. government forced nearly all tribes in the eastern and western United States off their ancestral homelands and relocated them to isolated, rural areas away from more metropolitan economic development opportunities.” When it comes to lack of activities, rural isolation is no help because traveling to other towns for activities is hard when other towns are too far away to travel on a regular basis. When it comes to current domestic violence, if someone is seriously injured or needs help, there is a slow response time because of the distance to the victim. By the time a response team arrives, it is often too late or after the incident occurs, meaning nothing can really be done about
