In the United States, there are some juveniles who are sentenced to diversion programs as a form of sentencing. These programs are sometimes run by the local police department, court, or an outside agency. These programs were created for status offenders to avoid criminal records and charges. Youth diversion programs are intended to offer as an alternative to the conventional juvenile justice system proceedings.
Adolescents enlisted in diversion programs meets with probation officers who must periodically send progress reports to the court. Those juveniles who comply with all rules of the program requirements are able to avoid intervention and court adjudications. One type of diversion program is called “Outreach and Tracking”. The conductor of this program commences contact with the adolescent a few times a day, every day of the week. The purpose of this is to provide close monitoring to keep the teen safe in just about every aspect of their life to refrain them from getting in any type of trouble.
The local juvenile court refers the teenager and his or her parents for an intake interview with one of the YDP counselors, who conduct certain testing to develop a personal plan that addresses the unique needs of the teenager. This plan may require individual, family, or group counseling; workshops on topics like substance abuse issues or domestic violence, some volunteer work in the community, restitution, or taking part in an employment program.

The Ohio juvenile diversion program began in 1986 and was developed by diversion agents who wanted to help juveniles develop positive self esteem, personal values, interpersonal communication skills, ways to deal with stress and peer pressure, and skills in setting goals (Journal, 1993). Juvenile participants can enter this juvenile diversion program by being mandated by a judge, recommended by a school counselor, through a probation officer, or recommended by a parent. Quite often the choice to enroll a juvenile in this program is selected over placing the juvenile into a detention facility. When speaking of supervision in the community, the offender is obviously out and about in the community just under a certain type of monitoring, checkups and visits, and rules to be followed. Within diversion programs, offenders can keep their job when they mess up, not face stigmas, avoid a bunch of costs, and if they complete the programs the actual crime itself can be dropped off their record. I personally think that is the big difference, as humans we are all judgmental at some points; when people find out a person has committed a crime they are treated differently. In recent discussions of prison reform, a controversial issue has been whether diversion programs are more beneficial than not. On the one hand, some argue that diversion programs give convicted criminals a chance to hopefully better themselves and get back into society. On the other hand, however, others argue that these programs are allowing dangerous criminals back into the streets with no guarantee of them changing their behaviors. In sum, then, the issue is whether society and the government should allow these unguaranteed hopes to continue. This paper will discuss the history of the juvenile justice system and how it has come to be what it is today. When a juvenile offender commits a crime and is sentenced to jail or reform school, the offender goes to a separate jail or reforming place than an adult. It hasn’t always been this way. Until the early 1800’s juveniles were tried just like everyone else. Today, that is not the case. This paper will explain the reforms that have taken place within the criminal justice system that developed the juvenile justice system.
One of the fasting growing juvenile treatment and interventions programs are known as teen courts. Teen courts serve as an alternative juvenile justice, to young offenders. Non-violent, and mostly first time offenders are sentenced by their peers’ in teen courts. Teen courts also serve as juvenile justice diversion programs. Teen courts vary from state to state, and sometimes within the same state. With this program, all parties of the judicial setting are juveniles with the exception of the judge. Each teen court, is designed specifically to meet the needs of the community it serves. Teen courts were created to re-educate offenders throughout the judicial process, create a program with sanctions that will allow the youth not to have a juvenile record, and to also instil a sense of responsibility.
The reason for this program is to use innovative approaches in developing programs, which will teach youth alternatives to violence, substance abuse, anger issues, low self-esteem, and the consequences as a result of making bad choices. Over the years many laws and policies have been created and altered. As a result many activities have become illegal. With so many laws in place now, juvenile crime is also on the rise. More and more juveniles are being sent to prison than ever before. The goal of the juvenile justice system was to rehabilitate but now it is more focused on punishment. However, many rehabilitation programs are still in place to help delinquent juveniles get back on the path to becoming successful productive members of society. One program that comes to mind is the restorative justice program.
