Direct access gives patients the availability to go to a physical therapist for an evaluation without having to see a doctor or other healthcare provider first. With direct access, the patient will not have to have a referral or prescription to receive physical therapy services. Currently, direct access is available in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and the US Virgin Islands, but some of these states require limitations and restrictions. There are eighteen states that has unrestricted patient access. This means that a patient can go directly to a physical therapist for an evaluation and get treatment and not have to present with a prescription or referral. There are twenty-six states, the District of Columbia and the US Virgin Islands that have patient access with some provisions. There are barriers however, that need to be removed so that all states will have no restrictions or limitations. Having to see a physician to get a referral for therapy takes too much time and can be costly. If I had a problem and thought that my problem could be resolved by going to physical therapy, I would hope that I could go directly to a physical therapist for an evaluation. This would be convenient for me because I am so busy. If the physical therapist determined that I would benefit from physical therapy, I would have saved myself the time and expense that it would have taken for me to go visit a doctor only to get a referral to go see a physical therapist. If I had to visit a doctor first, there would be waiting times. Once I could finally get in to see a doctor to get a referral for physical therapy, there would then be waiting times to get into physical therapy for an evaluation. I may be waiting days to weeks to get in on a schedule for an evaluation which could delay my recovery
