The difference between my native culture and American culture Many people moved from their country to another to have a better life, moreover; they would adopt another culture and shifted to new culture. when I first come to the United States, it is hard for me to interact with culture because American culture is different from Ethiopian culture. For some Ethiopian people is easy, they actually adopt American culture. today, it is going to be hard to leave and to come in the United States as immigrant because of the new president of The United States, Donald Trump. There are two differences between Ethiopian and American culture such as, have a right to speak and how they are respect the elders. One of the difference between Ethiopian and …show more content…
In Ethiopia, people respect the elders even if one age of the difference. For example, if you are in the bus or taxi, you should stand up and let the elders have your sit. we also respect elders when we come to the food which is we have to serve first the elders before the children eat. It is a culture to serve the elders first in Ethiopia. When we eat a dinner, first my dad has the plat before everybody and then my mom, my older sister and the last person will be the youngers. In contrast, in American culture, children come first when they serve the food and then the elders. One day I went to one of my friend’s house who have been in America for the past 20 years and they are doing certain thing like American people. The time was late and they ask me to have a dinner with them, and my friend and her family gather to the dinner table and her mom start serving in every plates. She first start severing from myself and my friend, but I refuse her and I tell her to start with her husband. In America, elders do not want to have your sit in bus or train. One day when I was going to work on the train. one women probably, she will be 65 years old come and stand next to me I was sitting on the chair and I ask her to sit. as soon as she saw me standing, she starts saying something that I did not expect. She said, “young lady I can take care myself, I do not need your help”. I feel shock at
People of different ages often have problems with one another because of the depravity of society and culture. Because of age differences, people are usually seen as incapable or have no ability to carry out things that others are able to do, like surviving or taking care of themselves. In one book, Two Old Women, by Velma Wallis, the two main characters, Sa’ and Ch’idzigyaak, were left because they were old and just wore down the tribe or so the tribe believed. “The council and I have arrived at a decision… We are going to have to leave our old ones behind” (Wallis5). They thought that doing so would help them rebound and get back to living a normal lifestyle. However, the complete opposite of what they expected happened. Instead of thriving, many of the tribe’s members ended up dying on their journey. The society that they were a part of made a decision of leaving the elderly behind, in hopes of recovery, but deterioration is what resulted. In the end, the society and its influences on the desperate people i...
Growing up a Nigerian teenager can at times be a struggle. Differences between the Igbo and American culture can pose problems between Igbo parents and their children. It would be great for Igbo parents to embrace the difference between Igbo and American culture, as well as grant freedom and expression to the children that they raise.
Being a resident of South Carolina, African-American Culture was chosen as part of the applied learning project for the Intercultural Nursing class, because African-Americans make up more than a quarter of this state’s population. According to the 2010 United States Census Bureau, the total population for South Carolina (S.C.) is 4,625,364, with 27.9% being of African-American descent. The purpose of this paper is to develop an understanding and sensitivity to issues and cultural variances or phenomena that are unique to the African-American Culture. Another goal is to identify nursing interventions that are important for the nurse to consider in caring for this population. These phenomena’s include variances in social organization, communication, space, perception of time, environmental control, and biological variations associated with the African-American culture. (Giger, 2013 and South Carolina minority, n.d.)
Africanisms in America are a highly surveyed topic for the black community. Joseph E. Holloway describes Africanisms as “those elements of culture found in the New World that are traceable to an African origin” (Holloway 2). I believe, that africanisms are the traditions and cultural behaviors of African Americans that resemble the some of the same traditions and cultures in Africa. Which makes you ponder about what current elements does our culture use that ties back to Africa. Which in fact there are several africanisms that still exist. African Americans have retained an essence of Africa in their speech, hair care, clothing, preparation of foods, and music by over centuries of separation from the Dark Continent.
Furthermore, people have the urge to better themselves by becoming educated. In doing so they tend to move from one place of residence to another for a variety of reasons. Such as for greener pastures, a sense of adventure, and in the case of some African nations it is because of frustration, as a result of deliberating economy, and others just want to change their lifestyle. However, people tend to struggle when it comes to being culturally fit. Everyone wants to fit in and look the part when it comes to how we dress, look, act, talk and even walk. Culture defines us and defines who you are as a person. Those characteristics are the way people are perceived when it comes to their culture and personality.
Hypertension will continue to be a major cause of death all for Americans especially African Americans. Limitations in care for the under-served will continue to be a growing problem. The United States of America has always had a problems with cohesive cultural values. Due to the fact that it 's a country where cultural values don 't always mean the same for people. It 's a melting pot, no one culture is the same so therefore there is no set cultural value. More than that, it 's a symbol of overcoming and perseverance through times where people were under represented and unequal in the eyes of those who surrounded them. Struggle is no stranger to the African American culture, the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments aided in the equality among blacks in whites. Historically, even with these amendments in place, blacks had a long way to go. The black fist, cannot be mentioned without accounting for the black power movement and
Most American people I have talk to so far, think that they are different from other people in the world especial people from Africa. They think that if they were to move to Africa, they would have to live a different life style than they are used to, or they simply would not manage to adopt to the “African culture”. Well, for the most part, most of the information the American people have is based on the stereotypes and what the media presents. It is not necessarily correct. Surprisingly, I though life was going to be different before coming to the USA from South Africa. Nonetheless, I would admit that most of Americans would find it hard to adopt to not only some African cultures, but also any other culture outside their country. However, life in South Africa is more similar to the life in the USA than most people expect.
Some seasons are being jobless, lack of education, wars in his or her country. People are moving to the USA to improve their life conditions with family and friends. Immigrates are coming from their country to enjoy the freedom in America. . Many people can’t afford to live in Liberia. Africans love America so much, so they try their best to come and live here. America is a free country with a lot of opportunities. My country Liberia was in civil war during the past years so this led many of us immigrating to the United States of America. There are so much good things when living in America such as jobs, money with paying for your school, free public schools for kids and living in a nice and safe environment. Many people do not have these kinds of opportunities in their native country. My favorite thing about living in America is the cultures, food, freedom of speech and learning new things all the
At some point in our lives we experience a culture as an outsider by moving from one culture to another. In the world today there are so many different cultures and not one of them is found to be the same.Instead they all have something that makes them unique, whether its language or even the clothes they wear and their behavior as well. The differences they have is what separates them from one another and who ever joins that particular culture must get accustomed to their way of life.In the society today we have many people immigrating to the United States to start a new and better life but what they soon begin to realize is that it’s a whole new world out there and in order to survive they have to get accustomed to the new way of life which is much different from their lives before.
Traditions are practices/beliefs that are passed down from generation to generation. In traditional African societies, a kinship ties people through birth or marriage. There are two kinds of relationships in customary African tradition; those bound by blood, which are called consanguine, and those constructed by marriage, called affilial. There are four key descents that determine inheritance and marriage. However, the most common descent is patrilineal, which traces ancestry through one's father. While in America, we are vary tolerant of tracing our descent from both parents.
In the Western world European colonialism is hailed as an accomplishment. It is the time where Europeans flourished economically after finding and taking control of the lands of the New World. Because of European colonialism and the need for free labor, millions of Africans were forced from their homeland and were forced into slavery. Years later the Europeans came back to colonize and take the rich resources of Africa without any regard to the native people who lived there. Though colonialism ended in the United Stated in the 1700’s and other parts of the Americas in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, many of its racial and injustices are still an ingrained in society today There have been many instances where groups of people within African
A basic understanding of African religions will provide an awareness of African customs, the African view of death and life beyond death. In many cases the african religion is polytheistic on their day to day practices. However, they believe in The High God where is overriding beliefs that beyond gods, spirits one god exists. Despite the general belief in a Supreme Being, cults to the “High God” are notably absent from many African religions; prayers of petition or sacrificial offerings are directed toward secondary divinities, who are messengers and intermediaries between the human and sacred realms. In many countries in Africa people pray to different gods and goddess. In West Africa theirs a lot of animism, where they pray to the sky and the earth and the seas.
