Derrick Rose started off as a normal person, struggling with life just like us. Rose was born October 4th, 1988, in Chicago Illinois. He was the youngest of 4 boys, born to a single mother by the name of Brenda Rose. Growing up in the rougher part of town, his family guided and influenced him in to give his all and pursue basketball; they noticed his gift for the game would bring him far in life early on.
His high school career began with his enrollment at Simeon Career Academy. During Rose’s freshman year, he led his junior varsity team to the city championships; later being offered to play with the varsity team, but turned the offer down, not wanting to steal the upper classman’s thunder. points for the Wolverines. The game was sold out and included more than a dozen college scouts in the audience. By his senior year of high school, Rose was ranked the nation’s best high school point guard; Played at Madison Square Garden, losing 59-51, to Rice High School; and led the Simeon Wolverines to become the first Chicago high school team to win back-to-back championships. His college career came with challenge, but like everything else Rose does, he put 100 percent effort in overcoming the obstacles in his way. Rose was neck deep in college offers. With help and support from his three older brothers, Rose decided that the University of Memphis and their basketball team was the place for him. His freshman season with the Memphis Tigers brought him to the National Championship game. Where, in overtime, lost 75-68, to Kansas. After his outstanding freshman season, the NCAA pursued investigations over rumors about his SAT scores and eligibility to play for the Memphis Tigers. The School’s investigators deemed he was eligible and let him play, but NCAA detectives weren’t convinced. They found that Derrick had at least on grade, a D, changed to an A for no reason, and thought someone else may have token his SATs for him. The Memphis Tigers’ status as the 2008 Championship runners up was vacated. Though, the whole ordeal was no setback for Rose. Rose was drafted in the 2008 NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls, as their first overall pick. Rose’s superlative rookie season (2008-09) earned him the title of Rookie of the Year. Although, Derrick Rose had his eye on a more formidable challenge; Rose wanted to be MVP of the League. “Why not? Why can’t I be MVP of the League? Why can’t I be the best player of the league? I don’t see why. Why can’t I do that?” exclaimed Rose in an interview. “I think I work hard, and dedicate myself to the game, and sacrificed a lot at a young age.” His hard work payed off, for Rose received the title of MVP of the League in 2011, after the 2010-11 season. He was the youngest player to ever receive the award; he was 22. His accomplishments prove Rose was destined to play Basketball.
Isn’t it obvious why he decided to play the sport? Derrick Rose grew up in Englewood, one of the most dangerous neighborhoods on the South Side of Chicago. He was the youngest of 4, and had no father figure. His brothers and mother pushed him and supported him to be the best he could be. But what if they weren’t there for him? Rose could have easily been just another statistic, just another name appearing after the word R.I.P. He could have easily been nothing, but the support of his family allowed him to achieve the highest of the high. Now imagine if every child in the hood had a support system like Rose. There are so many kids all around the world, just like Rose, with all odds against them. The only difference is instead of having people to tell them they can make it, that they are strong, and can overcome their obstacles, they have people telling them the opposite. Thousands of kids are told every day that they are just another name on a birth certificate, with no real importance. They are told so many negative things about themselves that they believe it. If these youths had support, teachers and other peer’s encouragement, maybe the world would be a better place. How many people like Derrick Rose are out there? Each child has the ability to change the world, and even if the change is small, it still matters. Derrick Rose came up, against all odds, and left his influence on the world. His “Why can’t I” comment inspired so many to put their 100 percent effort into their passion, because if he could do it, why can’t they? Rose is an example of how if you believe in yourself and try your absolute best, you can do what you set out to achieve. If he can do it, why can’t
you?

A few months later Larry enrolled himself into Indiana State University. In his senior season at ISU Larry led the Sycamores to the NCAA Championship game where they played the Michigan State Spartans led by Larry's soon to be rival Earvin 'Magic' Johnson. Unfortunately for Larry and the Sycamores they lost to the Spartans, but Larry left ISU as the 5th highest scorer in NCAA history.

I have always liked emotional commercials, they grab my attention and make me feel strong emotions while watching TV. Seeing Derrick Coleman’s commercial made me hopeful and made me feel like anything is possible. In the beginning of the commercial Coleman is a kid with hearing aids and he talks about how kids picked on him, how he was always picked last, and how his football coaches didn’t know how to talk to him because he was deaf. Everyone told him to give up playing football but he kept playing even when he wasn’t picked to play in the NFL right away. He trained hard and at the end of the commercial it shows him walking out on to the Seattle Seahawks field with the stadium lights glowing and everyone cheering. I believe this commercial had a lasting powerful effect on the people that saw it because it made you feel emotional, the story supported Duracell’s argument, and people admire and trust Derrick Coleman.
Stephen Curry, currently one of the best players in the NBA, experienced an obstacle when he was not to a top college. Rather than seeing this as an end to his NBA dreams, he overcame this obstacle by turning it in to an opportunity. As a member of the Davidson College team, the underdogs at the 2008 NCAA tournament, he was able to demonstrate his skills during his teams dream run to the final 8. Through his shooting prowess and never give up mentality he showed the basketball world his ability to change the course of a game. Had he not been challenged by this obstacle he may not have had the opportunity to demonstrate his skills, with this opportunity acting as a catalyst for many more in the future.
Derrick always tells me never to be selfish because not everyone is as blessed as us. Hope you guys got to see what an amazing person Derrick Rose is in on and off the court. In conclusion, I'm sure that everyone has someone inspiring in their lives, but I couldn’t have asked for a better role model in my life. The impact that he has on not only his family, but the world is something that amazes me every day. He always finds ways to give back to the community and make the community better.
He attended Western Hills High School where Pete played football and baseball. Due to his lack of interest in his studies Pete was left with two options to either be held back a year or to attend summer school. Pete Rose’s father, Harry Rose, decided that it would be better for him to repeat a year of school than to miss a summer playing baseball. It would also give Pete an extra year to mature physically (Rose 1). It ultimately paid off because right after Pete graduated from High School he signed his first professional contract with the Cincinnati Reds. I’m going to step away for just a second and mention that the life that Pete Rose was living is the dream for anyone who grew up playing sports. To work as hard as you can, for as long as you can too eventually one day be standing on the field that you admired for so long is absolutely amazing. Now right out of the gate Pete was a legend in the making. In 1963, he earned the Rookie of the Year title receiving 17 of the 20 total votes. He was on the pathway to success with nothing standing in his way, besides

Once Michael was born, his parents did not want to raise their family in the streets of Brooklyn where there was violence and drugs. They thought this would be too much temptation for their kids to not fall into. They then moved to Wilmington, North Carolina, a small, laid back town. Mr. and Mrs. Jordan showed all their kids how to work hard and make things happen rather than sit around and wait for things to happen. Although most of their kids stuck to hard work, Michael had some tendencies to be lazy when playing sports. He was always discouraged because he could never compete in sports with his older brother, Larry.
