Deforestation of the Amazon Rainforest:
The Amazon is the world’s largest tropical rainforest and home to millions of species (National science foundation, 2011). Deforestation has increased rapidly over the last 5 years. Did you know that one hundred fifty billion meters of forest are lost each year? That is equivalent to about 36 football fields per minute! What is deforestation? For those of you who may not know, deforestation is the act of cutting down trees in order to use the timber or to replace the area for other purposes such as shopping centers and living areas. ("Deforestation," n.d.) You environmentalists have to start talking action. Deforestation exploits our ecosystems and natural resources, altering our environment. Stop the mass murder of trees!
There are many causes of deforestation. For instance agricultural activities, which are one of the major factors affecting deforestation because of the steadily increasing demand for food products. Logging is also another reason that contributes to all the wood base industries of wood suppliers, paper companies, and furniture makers. Wood is also used as fuel, therefore trees are cut for supplies, some examples of wood being used as fuels are charcoal and firewood. As humans, we are expanding and overpopulation is affecting forests.The more people we are , the more land and resources we need. Desertification of land and mining are two causes of deforestation that release toxic chemical that will contaminate the rainforest making it unsuitable for trees to grow. Deforestation is the clearing of a forest and/or cutting down of trees for human benefits such as agriculture, wood exports, etc. Deforestation is the cause of numerous environmental impacts such as habitat loss, flooding and soil erosion. It can also cause climate change, by reducing the amount of rainfall and changing the amount of sunlight reflected from Earth’s surface and increases the risk of forest . Tree growth is important for biodiversity because they absorb carbon dioxide which is a harmful greenhouse gas . However, since deforestation reduces natural carbon sinks, it disrupts the balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide in the air causing the amount of carbon dioxide in the air to increase. This poses a serious threat since carbon dioxide traps the sun’s heat and radiated light inside the earth’s atmosphere. So, with the increase in carbon dioxide more heat is trapped and thus adding to the effects of global warming. Among the many places where deforestation takes place, Amazon seems to be one of the most affected ones. More than 20 percent of it is already gone, and much more of it is severely threatened due to deforestation . It is estimated that the Amazon alone is vanishing at a rate of 20,000 square miles a year .
Environmental issues affect every life on this planet from the smallest parasite to the human race. There are many resources that humans and animal needs to survive; some of the most obvious resources come from the forests. Forests make up a large percentage of the globe. The forests have global implications not just on life but on the quality of it. Trees improve the quality of the air that species breath, determine rainfall and replenish the atmosphere. The wood from the forests are used everyday form many useful resources. Moreover, thinning the forests increases the amount of available light, nutrients and water for the remaining trees. Deforestation of the Amazon River basin has been progressing for decades as mass quantities of land have become necessary to sustain the growing farming industry of the area. Road-building, farming, ranching, and logging have been devastating to the tropical forests and the change has been rapid as deforestation of the area only began around 1970 (Fearnside, Pfaff). The government of countries in the Amazon have designed their current initiatives around increasing infrastructure and business, but these initiatives are largely responsible for deforestation activity (Laurance). The decline in forests of this region has become a serious issue as the effects it has on the climate and ecosystem of the Amazon River basin and the rest of the world are great. The high rate of deforestation in this area, averaging from 25,000 to 50,000 square kilometers per year since 1970, suggests numbers that project a complete absence of Amazonian tropical forest within the next 50 to 100 years if greater prevention methods are not taken (Shukla). These number projections mean threatening futures for deforestation dynamics, carbon fluxes, forest fragmentation, impacted ecosystems, social issues, and climates both of the region and the world.

People have been deforesting the Earth for thousands of years, primarily to clear land for crops or livestock. Although tropical forests are largely confined to developing countries, they aren’t just meeting local or national needs; economic globalization means that the needs and wants of the global population are bearing down on them as well. Direct causes of deforestation are agricultural expansion, wood extraction (e.g., logging or wood harvest for domestic fuel or charcoal), and infrastructure expansion such as road building and urbanization. Rarely is there a single direct cause for deforestation. Most often, multiple processes work simultaneously or sequentially to cause deforestation.
Deforestation is the elimination of existing trees from the earth; attributable factors include urbanization, logging, ranching, and farming and to some extent land speculation. Land speculation can be included as cleared land is more valuable than forested land. Deforestation, done in the name of progress, and the long-term, devastating effects of it, is killing our planet.
Countries that experience massive amounts of deforestation are ones that in particular are unstable economically. As stated before, countries like Brazil, Asian Oceanic spots like Indonesia, a handful of African countries, and a portion of European communities see the most activity. The ones in that seem most devastated by such is Brazil and countries in the Asia Oceanic. Why you ask? Well, apart from being close to the bottom in the economic spectrum, these countries are home to countless rainforests. With of cutting down of these trees brings into play a major cause in our world today; illegal clear cutting. What causes such an act? For starters, the main priority for these countries is expansion. To expand and provide for the people, making land available for infrastructure, and this in retrospect creates another cause, urbanization in the Amazon. Approximately, the population in Brazil has increased by 25%, a substantial increase when you compare to just 8% in the 90 's (Costa, M. H. 2009). As an economist we can sense what the future hold for a country like Brazil, with increase in population, we see an uprise in deforestation. As a result, the demand for land, homes, paper, oil and other commercial materials becomes in-demand for the society. Taking a step back and looking at the big picture quickly becomes an afterthought, leading to the destruction to many endangered species housed within. Over the course deforestation it has been practiced, with no policy or intention to punish its instigators. The WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) has estimated that some of our planet 's most precious species reside in such areas (Shukl, G. 2012). The loss of such biodiversity effects humans directly, with an estimated 70% of our food and plants come from these areas (Shukl, G. 2012). Scientists themselves are just beginning to understand the serious problems caused by deforestation. Deforestation occurs all over the world by all types of people. Peasant farmers even add to the problem because in most tropical countries the farmers are very poor only making between eight hundred and fifty four hundred dollars annually (NASA Facts). Therefore, they do not have enough money to buy what they need to live therefore they must farm to raise crops for food and to sell. In these poor countries the majority of people are peasant farmers this farming adds up to a great deal of deforestation. These farmers chop down a small area of trees for there plot to farm on and burn the tree trunks (NASA Facts). The combined number of farmers maintaining this process creates a great deal of clearing and burning of the land they need to cultivate, which results in land being treeless. One of the most evident problems associated to the environment is the issue of the logging of trees, mainly in undisturbed places such as the Amazon basin. Trees are considered the lungs of the Earth. They recycle all the polluting carbon in the air and return oxygen back into our atmosphere, creating a stable cycle of carbon in our atmosphere. However, the impeccable rates which trees are being cut down in our forests have grown to ever increasing and alarming rates. Trees that are made way for farming are burnt up releasing deadly amounts of carbon and thus leading to the problem of global warming. As its names suggest the world is slowly warming up and without any notice the environment which God has gave us will be slowly eradicated. The daily lives which humans carry on about every day are also a factor influencing on our environment and global warming. By driving cars that have a thirst for petrol we are releasing carbon dioxide and furthermore impacting on the world?s climate. In Australia environmental impact has always been evident. Land clearing especially in places such as Queensland has caused land to lay dry and lifeless where all forms of life is destroyed. By clearing land we are not only affecting our climate but are also destroying animal habitat and the usage of the land. Senseless actions by commuters in Australia, emitting tons and tons of lethal gases vulnerable to the atmosphere are starting to take its toll on our climate. We are seeing a harsher climate and at the same time less rain. If we want to preserve our world we must take a stance on this issue and take action for what is right, not carrying on the actions that will lead to a desolate, destroyed Earth.
