The Effects of D-Day The largest seaborne invasion in history was the invasion of Normandy during World War 2. The Battle of Normandy started June 6, 1944 and that day is called D-Day. On D-Day the three main countries that invaded the Normandy beaches were the United States, Great Britain, and Canada. This invasion was very successful and it weakened the German forces. After D-Day the Germans surrendered nearly a year later on May 8, 1945. D-Day and the Battle of Normandy was an important turning point in the war and it caused Nazi Germany to eventually lose the war. World War 2 started on September 1st, 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. Then shortly after France and the United Kingdom declared war on Germany. More and more countries joined in and took sides; Axis powers or Allied powers. The Axis powers were made up of Germany, Italy, Japan, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria. The Allied powers were made up of U.S., Britain, France, USSR, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Greece, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, South Africa, and Yugoslavia. This was the biggest war in history because of all the countries involved. Throughout the early parts of the war, Germany was very successful. As the Germans took over countries in Europe, through the use of the German Blitzkrieg. Blitzkrieg was a type of war were the attacking side would strike very quick. Then by using blitzkrieg it made the Germans and the Axis powers very powerful. As the Germans became more powerful, it made the Allied countries form together to take down the Germans before Germany had absolute power over Europe. Hitler was the leader of Germany and he had in mind of taking over as many countries as possible to achieve the status of ruler of the... ... middle of paper ... ...estern front. The USSR took advantage of there being fewer troops on the eastern front and pushed their way westward toward Germany. Eventually the USSR reach the heart of Germany and defeat them. Therefore, D-Day and the Battle of Normandy was an important turning point in the war because it made two war fronts which helped the USSR advance to Germany to end the war. The importance of D-Day and the Battle Of Normandy has a great part in winning the war for the Allied powers. It change the momentum of the war in favor of the Allied powers. It was the first major win for the Allied powers on the western front. It created two war fronts on both sides of Germany which allowed the Allied powers to surround the Nazis. Therefore, D-Day and the Battle of Normandy was an important turning point in the war and it caused Nazi Germany to eventually lose the war.
