Lost in Love
Many love stories end with happy endings, while others lead to tragedy. A forbidden love story, Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand, displays a love triangle established through the main characters. Cyrano faced challenges, which impact how he is able to show his love. He is afraid to confess his feelings to Roxane because he knows she is in love with Christian, and is insecure about his nose. Unfortunately, he is self-consciousness about his nose, mainly due to its unusually massive size, prevents him from sharing these emotions directly to his love. In one case, this is shown in the balcony scene with Roxane, Christian, and Cyrano. For example, the balcony scene presents a situation with an obstacle towards the characters because Cyrano knows Roxane is in love with Christian, but cannot change the results of it since Roxane’s heart will break. He soon learns he has to let Roxane go, which is one of the hardest obstacles he has to face. Sometimes, letting loved ones go is devastating, but it is the right thing to do if it makes them happy.

Obstacles prevent those to show true feelings and affections to the ones who mean the most. Furthermore, people hide their true feelings to protect one’s intentions with what morally belongs to them. During the balcony scene, Cyrano faces several obstacles to express his feelings towards Roxanne even though he failed at first. When Roxane says, “And I love you. . . and I am yours… and you/ Have made me thus,” she is truly in love with the words proclaimed by Cyrano, and not Christian himself (3.337-8). Not finding this out until later, Cyrano, therefore, is never able to confess his true love for Roxane. However, Cyrano does understand he must respect Christian and Roxane, and will not interfere in their relationship. While Christian gets to express his love through Cyrano, Cyrano faces challenges for his love for Roxanne, which only causes him to become more loyal towards Christian and more loving towards Roxane in the end. Cyrano faces many obstacles in the past that help the growth of his love towards Roxane increase. Challenges from the past affect the negative and positive feelings one has towards others. Cyrano’s past makes him more timid to share his true feelings because he fears how people will react. When Cyrano proclaims that “I remember last year, the First of May,/A little before noon, you had your hair/ Drawn low, that one time only,” (3.308-10) he is supposedly pretending he is Christian, however he talks about a memory from a year ago, when Christian did not know Roxane. She is too love-stricken by “Christian’s words” to realize this wronging. This line hints that Cyrano is professing “Christian’s love” but through his own true affections toward Roxane, which he cannot directly express. People will go to the extreme to maintain their loved one’s well-being.
This occurs in Cyrano de Bergerac, when Cyrano faces adversity and is unclear whether his feelings are more important than the interests of others. Christian tells Cyrano to “Win me that kiss” from Roxane because he understands that it will satisfy Roxane (3.361). Consequently, Cyrano is unsure to do so, he is afraid to admit his affection to Christian. Consequently, he realizes he needs to help his friend out to win the girl. He wants Roxane to be happy, and will sacrifice anything, even the chance to be with her, to ensure she is content with her life. Cyrano also believes he will never have a chance with Roxane, and although this is difficult for him to comprehend, there is nothing he can do to change the outcome of the situation. People obtain happiness when the most important people in life are supportive throughout tough
situations. Adversity prevents people from showing their true feelings and affection towards the people who mean the most. Throughout Cyrano de Bergerac, Rostand displays this idea through the character’s experiences and troubles. Adversities affect Cyrano and his actions throughout the play. These challenges shape him and help him grow as a person. He learns that people find happiness and true love, not always immediately, and includes many challenges along the way. Although it may be hard to find, love will always find its way to the right person.
Superficial passion revolves around outward beauty, but true love is always found in the heart. In Cyrano de Bergerac, Edmond Rostand conveys this truth beautifully. This play follows Cyrano in his quest for love from Roxanne, believing she could not love him due to his oversized nose. Little do they know that she does not truly love the handsome Christian, but rather Cyrano, the master of words.

Through a series of correspondences between Cyrano (posing as Christian), and Roxane, Roxane falls deeply in love with Christian. In turn, Cyrano falls for Roxane. Despite his feelings for Roxane, Cyrano backs off and allows, even helps, the two lovers get married. In Cyrano de Bergerac, playwright Edmond Rostand uses Cyrano’s relationship with Roxane as well as his friendship with Christian to prove the theme that loyalty forms a bond stronger than love.
This is one aspect of romanticism which Cyrano most definitely embodies with his characteristics of a tragic hero. He is a man controlled by fate, which is a favorite theme of Rostand. With this theme, Smith emphasizes that Cyrano is a pawn of his fate. Smith then proves this notion by explaining how romantic heros are pawns of “fate and events” (374). This shows how Cyrano, despite his positive qualities, is bound for failure due to the nature of the play. It could be argued that Cyrano is not a failure in the fact that his love for Roxanne does not go unanswered. It is devastating that Cyrano spent so much time trying to obtain this happiness and realises all along that “he could have won Roxanne’s love for himself” (“Debating Deception,” n.p.).
Cyrano De Bergerac has had an enormous, revolting nose ever since birth. Cyrano is an idealist who fights against the harsh reality of ordinary life. He feels that love is based too much by looks and appearance and thinks that no one will ever love him because of his appearance. Because of this, Cyrano alienates himself from society and lives in a world where love exists without appearance. Throughout the book, Rostand uses the motifs platonic love and beauty to highlight the idea that idealism requires nobility, integrity, courage, and self-sacrifice.
One of Cyrano’s most significant traits as a friend was his loyalty. He would always look out for friends in their time of need, which makes the audience feel sympathetic towards him. Because Cyrano is such a loyal friend, the audience feels angry with Roxane for manipulating him, and taking advantage of his loyalty. An example of Cyrano’s loyalty was when Ragueneau’s wife was having an affair with a musketeer, Cyrano confronted her, “Make sure you do./I like your husband, and I don’t intend/To see him made a fool of./Is that clear?”(II.iv.115-118). He stood up for his dear friend, and did not want him be made a joke of. I believe this is important because it shows that he is not only loyal to his friend, but also caring and has strong moral principles. What Lise was doing was wrong, and the author put this part in to emphasize the reader’s sympathy for Cyrano. Later when Ragueneau’s wife left him, Cyrano did not hesitate to support Ragueneau by talking him out of killing himself and providing him with a proper job. Life as humans is anything but perfect. In the book “Cyrano de Bergerac,” Edmond Rostand conveys the aspects of the human condition through Cyrano’s honor and cowardly behavior. As the play progresses, Cyrano experiences the upbringings and downfalls of being human. Since the beginning of the play, the author suggests that Cyrano is a humble man. Cyrano accepts responsibility for ruining the play, and offers all of his money to the actors to keep them from having to take a loss on the night's theatre performance. Christian De Neuvillette is introduced as an impulsive baron with charming features. Christian can be interpreted as a naïve, and shortsighted character, although within the play, his character bonds between more than just two negative attributes. The most desirable personality traits that a character would acquire are strenuous to preserve. One of these strenuous traits includes courtesy, which readers would target their attention to. The readers’ concentration targets to characters with high qualities that differ from other characters, in this case Christian fits perfectly into the category. After Christian De Neuvillette proves Cyrano De Bergerac that he has fortitude by insulting Cyrano’s extensive nose, Christian hastily apologizes later when Cyrano acknowledged he was the cousin of Roxane. This may be interpreted as an action of remorse, considering Christian did affront the cousin of Roxane; a woman Christian felt adoration towards. The interpretation is partially correct, although stepping into Christian’s point of view, his loyalty focalizes onto Roxane. Christian’s reaction to when he figured Cyrano was Roxane’s cousin, revealed a sudden change in attitude towards Cyrano, creating a much lighter and respectful tone in his speech: “I am so glad to meet you / Believe me...
While reading Cyrano de Bergerac, I found myself often wondering whether or not Cyrano had led a happy life. Actually, I never once wondered that, but that is irrelevant, because Cyrano’s happiness is the focus of this essay. Was he happy? Truth be told, I cannot say for sure. If we look upon his life, it would seem that he was a bit of a martyr, always sacrificing his happiness for the sake of others. This is probably the case, but I do not believe that he led his life with his happiness as any sort of goal. That will be a defining case in my argument. What I really believe is that he simply did not care about his happiness. In that sense, he did not so much sacrifice it, as he annexed and divided it when he saw fit. To a further extent, this apathy towards himself probably came from a low self-worth, almost certainly spawned not from his elephantine nose, but the fair maiden Roxanne. Finally, the nose itself, the very icon of de Bergerac, was probably not the problem that Cyrano believed it to be. All of this, however obscure it may seem, is crucial to the question posed of me now.
This is not fate nor coincidence. In complete control of his life, Cyrano is arrogant, deceptive, and hesitant in his actions; this ultimately leads to the great tragedy. As a result, we conclude that Cyrano has technically jeopardized himself. If Cyrano had not been so stubborn when he refused to be under De Guiche’s patronage, had not been so generous to feign the love letters for Christian, and had he not been so hesitatant when he deciding to confess his love to Roxane, the tragedy could become a romantic love story with a sweet ending. Again, Cyrano must hold all the responsibility for his actions and he must recognize that only he is to blame for this tragedy.
