By: Allen Katsva
Intro:
Concussions can cause very serious injuries in many sports today. Many Pro-athletes have suffered at least one concussion. A Concussion is a very common injury in many sports. Many people try to prevent these because they can affect their lives a lot. Before you can come back to playing that you play, there are many stages you must pass after getting a concussion. Going through a concussion is very difficult.
Concussions could happen in any sport and at any time. And a lot of the time they happen when you don’t suspect it. Concussions are most common in many Pro sports. Many concussions also happen in many youth sports. The way equipment is used also affects concussions. Concussions are unpredictable in sports.
What is a concussion?:
A concussion is a very common injury in many sports. Many athletes and kids that suffer a concussion may quit a sport because of it, but many athletes and kids might still play the sport after they suffered one. Every concussion has many symptoms. Some concussions can cause death. Finally, there are many different stages you must go through before you can come back to playing your sport. These were some things that

many people hate in concussions. Concussions can be very serious Injuries in man sports . Concussions happen in almost every sport. A concussion happens when you get hit really hard in your head. Then, your brain moves around your skull. And when it does, your brain could get bruises and your brain starts to work incorrectly (www.protectthebrain.org). Concussions can make you stay in a hospital for days or even weeks because of how dangerous it is. Once you get a concussion there are many stages you must go through. Passing all these stages may take some time before you get back to playing sports. “The first stage is having no symptoms while resting. The second stage is doing some activity with your body. The third stage is light practice. The fourth stage is going to practice but not jumping into anyone, slamming into anyone, or touching anyone. The fifth and last stage is going to practice with physical contact. If you complete all of these stages in order, you are allowed to go back to playing normally in whatever sport that you got a concussion in. These were the stages that you have to pass while getting a concussion. Concussions in Pro-sports: Football is a sport that gets many concussions. Concussions are very common in football. Most concussions in football happen in head-to-head collisions. This is when a football player’s helmet runs into the other and that person gets a concussion. Usually when this happens at least one of the players gets a concussion. This is how, many concussions have happened in football. Many concussions happen in baseball. Concussions in baseball are less common than in football. Most concussions in baseball happen because of line drives. A line drive is when the batter hits the ball very fast and almost parallel to the ground. In this case, it would probably hit a pitcher in the head. This was how, many concussions have happened in baseball. Concussions are very common in ice hockey. Concussions are the number 1 injury in almost every hockey league today.“Concussions in hockey most commonly occur as a result with a collision with the opponent or a collision with the boards.” (Baugh Cristine, Et Al. 2/13/17) Another way many concussions in hockey are happening is because of the players. Another way that many ice hockey players get concussions is the players. Most of the new players that join any league like the NHL are bigger and stronger. This shows that concussions are one of the most common injuries in ice hockey. Equipment: Football equipment has changed a lot over the years. Most have changed because of the fear of concussions. One example is how in 1940 there helmets were different. The helmets had leather padding with a little metal and plastic. Now helmets are hard plastic on the outside, and material that absorbs collisions (Baugh Cristine, Et Al. 2/13/17). There are many differences in football but that was just one of them footbal Baseball equipment has also changed over the years. Concussions was the reason for these new helmets. For example the old helmet could only protect 75 mph pitches. Normally pitchers pitch 90-100 mph pitches. Now the new helmet called the S100 could protect 100 mph pitches. Many players don’t wear them even though the are protective, but the ones that do wear them, wear them because they've probably already suffered a concussion(Rock Tom, april 9th 2011) This shows that baseball equipment has changed because of concussions. Ice hockey equipment has also changed over the years. The helmet has probably changed the most. This is because before the 1979 season, helmets were not needed. Many hockey league changed this rule because they were worried that ice hockey players would get more concussions as the years went by. A couple years after they made the rule, the amount of concussions happening went up and down. This shows that ice hockey equipment has changed over the years. Youth Sports: There are many youth sports that get concussions. All of these sports have different reasons for their concussions. For example, soccer gets a lot of concussions. This is because of all the headers that the players get. Another example is football, in football, kids get concussions by tackling each other and head-to-head collisions. Finally, basketball gets a lot of concussions. Most of these concussions happen when a kid takes a shot but someone tries to smack the ball, but they miss the ball and hit their face and they fall down to the floor very hard. (www.protectthebrain.org). These were some examples of different ways of concussions in different sports. Youth soccer is a sport that gets a big concussion rate.
They have even changed the rules because of it. The rule they changed was the heading rule. Kids that are 12 or younger are not aloud to head the ball (Cantu, Robert, Et Al.2/20/15). But if they do head the ball, they get a penalty. This shows that every youth soccer league is trying to prevent concussions from happening to many children in soccer. Youth Ice Hockey gets lots and lots of concussions. Just like soccer, they had to switch the rules a little bit. The rule they changed was about checking. They made it so kids under 12 years old can not check. Checking is like knocking someone into the boards. This shows that many youth ice hockey leagues are trying to prevent kids getting
concussions. Concussion Prevention: Preventing concussions is very important. If no one could prevent them, than there would be even more people suffering from concussions than there already is, and they would be happening a lot more than they already do.One way people could prevent concussions is wearing all the equipment needed. This is because many athletes think that they could go through practices without any of their equipment. But sometimes It could be because of the temperature or the heaviness, or the size of their equipment.(www.sportsconcussion.org) This was one way you could prevent concussions. There are many ways of preventing concussions. If every athlete has done all of these things, they would be less likely to have a concussion. Another way of preventing concussions in soccer is making sure that goal posts are secure. If they are not secure they could fall down and hit you. (www.sportsconcussion.org) That was another way of how people can prevent concussions. Many people are trying to prevent concussions today. Many of those people are the parents’ of kids who have suffered concussions. Another way of preventing a concussion is by playing by the rules. If athletes do not play by the rules than no one would be able to play because they would keep on getting concussions. Even though almost every athlete follows the rules, some of them don’t, and they get very hurt while playing(www.sportsconcussion.org). That was another way of preventing a concussion. Conclusion: Concussions are one of the most common injuries in many sports. These concussions occur in almost every single sport today. One sport with a lots of concussions is in football. Another sport with a lot of concussions is baseball. Finally, another sport with many concussions is ice hockey. These were some of the major sports that get many concussions. Concussions are very dangerous in many sports. Sometimes they could kill people while an athlete plays. Equipment is a major part of concussions. Many kids also get concussions while playing sports. Many people are trying to prevent all of these concussions from athletes and kids. Concussions are not good and could happen easily, that is why people try to prevent it with equipment, and so far it has saved a lot of people.
Injuries are a huge part in professional sports. When playing a professional sport athletes do not always take into consideration that their bodies are vulnerable to injuries. One of the leading injuries that can end athlete’s career is concussion. According Kia Boriboon author of the article “Concussion Management In Football: Don 't Shake It Off” concussion occurs when the brain repeatedly collides with the skull. Concussions are serious and cannot be taken lightly they are detrimental to a person’s athletic career as well as life. Players who have suffered from a concussion or like symptoms of a concussion are at risk and should not continue playing their sport until cleared by a medical doctor, who is an expert in concussions. If concussions are not treated with the appropriate medical care, it can cause physical and mental health problems for athletes well after their professional career have ended. In
Concussions, a minor traumatic brain injury that may occur when the head hits an object, are a huge problem in football in high schools and lower levels today. Concussions are very common in football, concussions have a huge negative effect on the brain, and parents and schools are worried about their kids safety. Concussion, in football, are a rising problem especially since the NFL is being sued for hundreds of millions because of concussions. High School football is very violent on children and thats why it is losing some participants.
Concussions and the effect they have on people ranging from the young to the old has become a very popular discussion in recent years. Generally people watch sports for entertainment and then there are those who engage in high impact sports from a very young age on. The people at home know how fun playing in a sport is, however they may not know the brutal consequences for some participating in that sport. Injuries to the brain are a main concern among those in the world of high impact sports. Football, soccer, wrestling, lacrosse, and rugby are among sports that athletes receive injuries in. The injuries vary from sprains, to fractures, to torn MCL or ACL, and bruised organs. Concussions are a severe type of injury endured by athletes in the sports world and this life changing injury is one that people are becoming more aware of.
That’s where the advancements in concussion detection and treatment comes into play. According to the article “Advancements in Concussion Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment” the writer states “the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 207,830 trips to an emergency room annually between 2001 and 2005 due to sports participation injuries” ( “Advancements in Concussion Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment | The Sport Journal” ). The report from the CDC shows how many reported sports injuries occur in a short period. However, this does not include the vast number of injuries not reported every year. That is a lot of injuries that go unreported and not cared for. We can help make it to where all kids after a concussion report it and get treated by educating them on the dangers they face if they continue to play as they are and tell them they will be right back to playing after the testing has been completed and they are clear to play again. This is not hard to do it’s just the fact of telling the kids the truth of the matter and them knowing the tests aren’t hard and don’t take long to pass. But the kids need to know this is needed if they want to be able to play for years to come in school and even in
The number of concussions in professional and amateur football has been rising and has sparked much controversy in recent years. These concussions are most likely linked with disease and even the deaths of some pro and semi-pro football players. New research is attempting to solve the problem but the issue is still prevalent in football today.
This study showed that there was a significant difference in the amount of concussions between these two leagues. There were 69 teams consisting of 829 players from Calgary and Edmonton that participated in this research. Both of these areas allow body checking. The leagues that didn’t allow body checking were from Kelowna and Vancouver. There were 33 teams and 379 players from these two areas that participated in the study. This study classifies severe concussions as greater than ten days time loss from being eligible to participate in hockey. The research showed that there were 83 concussions and 53 severe concussions in the body checking league. However there were only 15 concussions and 10 severe concussions in the non-body checking leagues. The researchers suggest that there is a 60% lower risk of having a concussion or severe concussion in these non-elite Bantam teams when body checking is not allowed based on local
The world of sports is filled with great memories, grand moments and at times complete mayhem. There are moments like hitting a Home Run in game 7 of the World Series or memories of scoring an overtime goal during the Stanley Cup finals. However, there are also incredibly low moments when mayhem occurs such as an action or incident that results in a concussion. An injury such as a concussion can ruin your sports career or potentially your ability to function normally in the future. Concussions are caused by blunt force trauma to the head, a fall or an injury that shakes the brain inside the skull. Recovering from a concussion can take weeks, months or even years to heal. For some, it can impair your mental or mobility functions for life.
How can a concussion be prevented? What is the minimum time an athlete needs to be out of the game after a concussion? What are the chances of an athlete suffering post-traumatic stress disorders after a blow to the head? In all sports athletes are prone to injuries, they can happen at any time and at any given moment. Nevertheless, people that have suffered from a head injury or concussion will also have problems dealing with their learning processes in the long run.
Concussions may not have many long-term effects, but if one does not take it seriously they could suffer from serious brain injuries that could possibly have devastating outcomes. Concussions should not be taken as a joke and should always receive proper treatment and care. One should not play a sport before their concussions is fully healed, because they could end up sitting out of the sport for longer than they first had intended.
A concussion may be caused by a blow, bump, or jolt to the head or by any fall or hit that jars the brain. A concussion causes the brain to work longer and harder. A concussion affects the mental stamina and function of the brain. Even though concussions are very serious and potentially life threatening to the young athlete, studies show that less than 50% of high school athletes will report their concussions. Almost all athletes
Recreational athletes, competitive athletes, high school athletes, college athletes, and professional athletes all have one thing in common: the risk of a concussion. It's impossible to go a season without one athlete from a team receiving a concussion. The more that these concussions are studied, the more we learn about them, such as their detrimental effects on athletes. Because of the risk of health issues and death that come with concussions, doctors, coaches, athletic trainers, and lawmakers are stepping in to protect athletes of all levels from receiving concussions.
Whether you lose consciousness or not, when you are hit and impacted in the head during a sport, you could suffer from a concussion. Many football players and hockey players get hit extremely hard in the head during their games, the impact can cause brain damage, stunt essential growth, and have long term effects. Athletes who have suffered from a concussion should get cleared by a medical professional before heading back to the field or rink. Although athletes want to strive to achieve a scholarship and get back on the field, this could be detrimental to their overall health, presently and in the future.
Everyone has heard about the so called “Concussion Epidemic” in the National Football League. The stories are everywhere from SportsCenter to local news stations. Concussions are when a person gets hit on the head or even somewhere else on the body and the brain slams into the skull due to the impact. If concussions are such a big deal in the pros, what does it mean for youth sports in America? Nearly 15 percent of all sports related injuries in high school athletes are concussions(American Headache Society). Concussions are a major health concern for youth sports and everyday more research is being shown about the long term effects of repeated blows to the head.
It is no question that the number one priority is to keep athletes of all ages as safe as possible. However, numerous players and fans feel as if organizations should focus their attention on players causing concussions. If the NHL were to discipline players such as Matt Niskanen with large fines and potential suspensions, we would see a decrease in the injury. The game of hockey can stay a high contact game as long as players know how to properly perform a legal hit. The three perspectives on the issue of the concussion has caused for changes to the game of hockey. Although these changes have not been ultimately supported by the players and fans, the number one priority has become the safety of the athletes.
The effect of concussions destroy lives and go well beyond the actual incident and ostensive recovery. In the study, researchers looked at 28 former NFL players, including 17 who had experienced a concussion with loss of consciousness. The types of brain damage that can occur as a result of a professional football player have received increased attention in recent years. The NFL takes dangerous contact seriously leveling fines against players who deliver unnecessarily violent hits.
