The group that I have chosen as my target group is Caribbean Immigrants of the United States. I have chosen this target group because I am from the Caribbean. Although I am not an immigrant I know many people who are immigrants and I am the daughter of one. Caribbean immigrants are a very diverse set of people who have migrated to the United States from the Greater or Lesser Antilles. There is close to 40 million people who live in the Caribbean. If you ask someone from the Caribbean, “why did they move from their home country?, Their answer would be “to search for a better life for my family”. Many of these immigrants are from larger islands such as Jamaica, The Dominican Republic, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago and Cuba. Currently, the rate of Caribbean immigrants to the United States has decreased but Caribbean immigrants are still migrating to the United States in large numbers. Caribbean people are well quipped to be U.S Citizens. They become naturalized faster than other groups do and their education level is high. What is interesting is that more than 69% of all Caribbean immigrants live in either Florida or New York (McCabe, 2011). Why are these immigrants not moving to states such as Texas in such great numbers? The Pew Hispanic Center estimates that there are at least 350,000 illegal Caribbean immigrants in the United States (McCabe, 2011). Caribbean culture versus American culture is greatly different. An important way for social workers to be culturally competent is not to ignore language barriers. It should not be assumed that English is always the first language spoken so there should be resources available. Although English is a very common language Caribbean immigrants still come to the U.S and have a very hard time adjusting to the change. They are stereotyped against and not understood. As an advocate of this group I would want to help these immigrants adjust to the United States and educate outsiders about their culture. There are many different cultures that are similar and many of the people migrating to the United States from the Caribbean are older people. It is common to hear that older people are set in their ways so I would try my best to find support groups for this group to become assimilated. In the Caribbean a beaten is as normal as a stroll on the beach. In a situation where I am a social worker assigned to a case such mom from the Caribbean being investigated by Child Protective Services for beating by her child with a “switch” or what is called a “tan tan stick” in the Caribbean. I would try to be as culturally competent as possible and respect my client’s culture while trying to counsel her and get her the resources that she needs. Child abuse and social work is not topics that you hear much of if you live on an island. There is also a shortage of mental health professionals. Immigrants must overcome many barriers to succeed in America. First, migrants frequently must learn a new language. Inability to communicate is a critical barrier for accessing the health care system (Urrutia-Rojas, Marshall, Trevino, Lurie, & Minguia-Bayona, 2006). Second, the processes of work and schooling for themselves and their families can be daunting. Lastly, immigrants use the established social network of longer duration residents for reference and knowledge (Nandi, Galea, Lopez, Nandi, Strongarone, & Ompad, 2008). For purposes of this report, there are three different types of immigrant: legal, undocumented, and refugees or persons seeking asylum. It is important to include cultural issues in the helping process to be more effective. We also need cultural competence because the U.S. is becoming more diverse. Therefore with diversity comes different beliefs, norms, and values. Eurocentric values dominate sciences and began cultural universals which puts the clash of dominate and non-dominate cultural behaviors in motion. In 1996 the NASW Code of Ethics increased the recognition of cultural competence. It is important to know diversity exist within ethnic and cultural groups because social workers need to know that relationships between helping professionals and clients may be strained. This happens because of the distrust between groups. Another important aspect is that the professional realizes their own values, biases, and beliefs. The reason for this is because they must value diversity to start with and understand the dynamics of difference. Culturally competent practitioners have to go through developmental process of using their own culture as a starting point to meet all behaviors. Striving for cultural competence is a long term process of development. The literature on cultural competence is theoretical and conceptual. They have not been evaluated in a systematic way. Roughly there are 2 million Native americans in the U.S. Which survive decimating disease, over-repressed in child welfare system, suffer from health problems, and are among the poorest people in the United States. Working with them clearly falls within the social work clearly mandate to serve vulnerable and oppressed clients. Cultural Competence Understanding culture is an important aspect of being a social worker; this does not mean learning common cultural traits is of great significance to the social work profession. “Consider the second-generation Japanese-American social worker whose practice consists of Mexican-American and African-American families. Memorizing national traits or cultural rituals would be interesting and informative, but ultimately these would be an inaccurate basis on which to “know” these particular families” (Dorfman, 1996, p. 33). When understanding cultural competence, it is important to learn from the client about their culture in order to serve them in the most helpful and efficient way possible. There is a major drawback to memorizing information, and that is, this information will not give you a real understanding of who your client is and what life experiences they have personally faced.

As decades pass, Florida’s population continues to grow and change rapidly. Being from both Dominican and Puerto Rican decent, the difficulties Latin Americans encounter become obvious. Trying to make a comfortable living in any Hispanic country is not an easy task. Many Spanish families, for that reason, decide to move to the United States for a better standard of living. And many of these individuals have been able to achieve their goals in life considering their minority roles in our country. Since Florida is the first peninsula most travelers come across when arriving into the U.S., the individuals find themselves to stay.
