Cambodia
The official name of Cambodia is The Kingdom of Cambodia and it was founded in 1953 by King Norodom Sihanouk. The capital of Cambodia is Phnom Penh, the official language is Khmer, and the official religion is Theravada Buddhism. The national anthem is Nokoreach or Royal Kingdom. The government is constitutional monarchy making the chief of state a king.
Social
Most of the people in Cambodia are Khmers, who are one of the oldest ethnic groups in Southeast Asia. The second largest group in Cambodia is the Vietnamese. Most of them are fishermen who in the floating villages around the Tonle Sap lake. Most Khmer and Vietnamese people dislike each other so their relationship has been colored by violence. Many Chinese also live in Cambodia; they are usually traders and merchants and contribute greatly to Cambodia’s economy. They get along with the Khmers and often intermarry. Another group that lives in Cambodia is the Chams. They are a very small Muslim group that lives on the shores of the Mekong River. They make a living by fishing, raising cattle, and building boats. Smaller groups known as the hill tribes live in the mountainous regions of Cambodia. Their language, customs, dress, and religious beliefs are all different from the Khmer.
Ninety five percent Cambodians follow Buddhism but that wasn’t always the case. The main religion in Cambodia actually used to be Hinduism and many building in Angkor were dedicated to the Hindu gods Shiva and Vishnu. But by the beginning of the eleventh century Buddhism was introduced into Cambodia. For some time both Hinduism and Buddhism were major religions in Cambodia. Cambodia’s ancient Angkor temples are architectural wonders of the world. The Angkor Wat, is the largest religious building in the world. Another popular temple is the Ta Pohm, which is partially covered in jungle. Inside the temples everything is usually very quiet except of the hushed tones of visitors. Handicrafts are also produced in Cambodia; some people go to Phnom Penh to learn the skills, while others learn from artisans in their villages. Some of them make items out of food and stone while others use copper and silver.
Cambodians play sports such as boat racing, which date back centuries. The most famous boat race takes place in November during the three-day Water Festival. More than three hundred boat teams participate in this event. Other sports that they play include volleyball, basketball, soccer, swimming, and kickboxing.
