Biome is a wide area on earth which consists of land or water and is characterized by its special features (Kalman, 1997). It is also known as a life zone with similar climate and soil adapted by plants, animals and other living organisms. The features of biome are mainly influenced by abiotic factors and location of that particular biome. Abiotic factors are the non-living components exists in the ecosystem, which include chemical components, temperature and weather. Abiotic factors can set boundaries between each biomes because the temperature and amount of yearly rainfall affect the species of living organisms that are able to live in the area. Besides that, the location of the wide area from the equator also affects the features of the biome. The climate will be warmer if it is located nearer to the equator compared to the area which is farther away from the equator. Biomes on earth are also characterized by the dominant flora and fauna living in the area. Scientists classify biomes to five major classes which are grassland, tundra, desert, aquatic and forest (refer to Figure 1 in Appendix 1).
The first type of biomes is grassland. Grassland is believed to exist in the world after the Pleistocene Ice Ages time. Grassland is defined as a wide area dominated by grasses. One of the most distinguishable characteristics of grassland is “the dominant vegetation comprises grasses, with geophytes and herbs also being well represented” (Fuls, Bredenkamp, Van Rooyen & Theron, 1993, p. 345). Grassland is divided into two: savanna and temperate grassland. Savanna consists of scattered trees and it covers a large area of Africa, Australia, South America and India. Temperate forest is distinguishable from the rest as it has unique season with distinct winter, moderate climate and growing season of 140-200 days annually. The third type of forest is boreal forest or taiga which represents the largest terrestrial biome. Boreal forest is located between 50 and 60 degrees north latitudes which is found in the broad belt of Eurasia and North America. Moreover, the seasons are divided into short period of moderately warm summer and long dry winter. Boreal forest has the length of growing season of 130 days annually.The summer at the boreal forest is short while the winter is long.
What is a biome? Biomes are major life zones characterized by vegetation type or by the physical environment. Climate plays a role in determining the nature and location of Earth’s biomes. Texas has 10 different ecosystems with lots of diversity. Minnesota has 4 different ecosystems which are also quite diverse. Regardless of the size of the biomes or the number of biomes in each state, they are all important not just to the locate environment but on a global level because of the life they support. We are going to take a look at the different biomes, comparing climate and rainfall, as well as vegetation fauna.
The Taiga Biome is also known as the boreal forest. The taiga biome is the largest terrestrial biome and extends across Europe, North America, and Asia. The taiga is located near the tundra biome. It has short wet summers and l0ng cold winters. The taiga get a large amount of snow during the winter and plenty rain during the summer. The taiga is found throughout the high northern areas. The taiga makes up 29% of the world’s forest’s the largest areas are located in Canada and Russia. It has the lowest temperatures in winter. Temperatures vary from −54 °C to 30 °C throughout the whole year. Taiga soils tend to be poor in nutrients. It doesn’t have the deep, enriched nutrients present in temperate deciduous forests. Due to the cold the soil is also very thin which messes up the development of soil and the ease with which plants can use its nutrients.
Another biome in the park is their temperate forest. Temperate forests have high humidity, high levels of precipitation, and variety of trees are also included. Freshwater biomes surround the park as well.
The Taiga Biome is a large, naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major part of both Siberia and North America. It is usually found at high elevations at more temperate latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the largest terrestrial biome on earth, covering around 50 million acres of land (NP, UC Santa Barbara). It is known for its subarctic climate that ranges between -51 to -1 °C in the winter and -21 to 7 °C in the summer. The two main season found in the taiga are summer and winter as autumn and spring are usually very short and barely noticeable. Winter makes up around six months of the year, with only around 50-100 frost-free days during the summer. Summer is also the season during which the taiga receives the most precipitation in form of rain. The remainder is made up of snow and dew, which adds up to around 30-85cm of precipitation yearly (NP, S.L. Woodward).
Some Abiotic features include Cold Climate, Rain, Snowfall, Snow Covered Ground, Snow, Sun, Ice, Water, Strong Winds, Short Days in the Summer, Very Cold and Long Days in the Winter, Minerals, Temperature, Carbon Dioxide, Air, Little Rainfall, Poor Soil.
Temperate grassland biomes can be found in North America, Africa, the pampas of South America and many parts of Eurasia. Grass is the main plant in Temperate Grassland biomes, trees and shrubs are rare to see in this type of biome. Temperate grasslands also have an extremely high abundance of wildlife. The wildlife living in this biome includes bison and pronghorn sheep, but mainly the animals most affected were the cattle and horses that lived on the surrounding farms.
The current level of conceptual understanding of the effects of biodiversity on ecosystem processes is so primitive that at this stage it is possible to recognize the linkages at the level of functional groups only. In any ecosystem there are diverse types of functions performed by different species or species groups. However, no two species or individuals are identical. It may be noted that some species diversity within the functional groups or genetic diversity within the species has important ecosystem
Tundra is the coldest of all the biomes. Tundra comes from the Finnish word tunturia, meaning treeless plain. It is noted for its frost-molded landscapes, extremely low temperatures, little precipitation, poor nutrients, and short growing seasons. Dead organic material functions as a nutrient pool. The two major nutrients are nitrogen and phosphorus. Nitrogen is created by biological fixation, and phosphorus is created by precipitation. Tundra is separated into two types: arctic tundra and alpine tundra.
Thesis: Forests provide the earth with a regulated climate, strong biodiversity, and good nutrient rich soil for plants to strive on.
The major biomes are the tundra, taiga, tropical rain forest, temperate forests, desert, grassland, savanna, chaparral, and marine. Each biome has it’s own characteristics, such as the tundra. The tundra is a biome that is located in the Northern Hemisphere of the world. It circles the North Pole and reaches down to the Taiga. The tundra has a very cold and harsh climate, especially in the winters.
The Deciduous Forest are located in Eastern half of North America, it is also in the middle of Europe. There are many in Asia,southwest Russia, Japan, and Eastern China. located in New Zealand, Australia. It has two big areas in south America, Southern Chile, and Middle East, and paraguay. The Eastern half of North America is like half of North American and Eastern America. Some are in Asia and the big country’s.
The world we live in today is always changing, whether it be technology or the land. As these changes take place, society must adapt to them. Many things begin to change as a result of this and society beings to turn into something completely different. One of the most overlooked changes that takes place is that of the environment and landscape. The landscape is one of the most important parts of our society’s culture and has a great effect on how we live. It seems that nowadays, many individuals are taking advantage of the land and nothing appreciating it for every thing that it is worth. Its true that not everyone is going to look at the environment and landscape in the same way, however that is no excuse to disrespect it. Then again, a whole new argument can start from that, as different individuals are going to have different views on what disrespecting the land. Many positive things have come from taking advantage of the land, and also, there have been many negative things to come as a result of this. It all depends on how you look at it. One thing is for sure though, no matter what the case is, the land and environment we live in plays a huge part in each of our everyday lives.
I have not had many meaningful moments with nature, even though I have many encounters with it. But the encounter that is the most prevalent in my mind is my vacation at Willow Lake, Minnesota. Here I had encounters with nature on the water, out bike riding, and watching a storm come in the distance.
NEED AND PURPOSE FOR CONSERVATION OF BIODIVERSITY Biodiversity conservation is about saving life on Earth in all its forms and keeping natural ecosystems functioning and healthy. Biodiversity is being depleted by the loss of habitat, fragmentation of habitat, over exploitation of resources, human sponsored ecosystems, climatic changes, pollution, invasive exotic species, diseases, shifting cultivation, poaching of wildlife etc. Since the human beings are enjoying all the benefits from biodiversity, they should take proper care for the preservation of biodiversity in all its forms and should prevent the degradation as well as the destruction of the habitats, thereby maintaining the biodiversity at its optimum level which will ultimately conserve the biodiversity for the future generation. The United Nations designated 2011-2020 as the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity. In biodiversity, each species, no matter how big or small, has an important role to play in ecosystems.
The branch of science that deals with how living things, including humans, are related to their surroundings is called ecology . The Earth supports some 5 million species of plants, animals, and microorganisms. These interact and influence their surroundings, forming a vast network of interrelated environmental systems called ecosystems. The arctic tundra is an ecosystem and so is a Brazilian rain forest. The islands of Hawaii are a relatively isolated ecosystem. If left undisturbed, natural environmental systems tend to achieve balance or stability among the various species of plants and animals. Complex ecosystems are able to compensate for changes caused by weather or intrusions from migrating animals and are therefore usually said to be more stable than simple ecosystems. A field of corn has only one dominant species, the corn plant, and is a very simple ecosystem. It is easily destroyed by drought, insects, disease, or overuse. A forest may remain relatively unchanged by weather that would destroy a nearby field of corn, because the forest is characterized by greater diversity of plants and animals. Its complexity gives it stability.
