The career field that my interview is based around is in the medical field, more specifically, the field that specializes in the medical care of infants, children, and teenagers. These types of doctors are called pediatricians, and their patients can range from a newborn baby to a twenty-one year old adult. There are many reasons to become a pediatrician. Some people have family in the medical field, which makes them feel compelled to enter into medical care, others have had a life changing experience which involved them looking to pediatricians to save them. The reason for me to choose this career field is that I love helping people, and to know that if I were to become a pediatrician that I could affect someone else’s life in an important …show more content…
More surprisingly, is that some pediatrician’s day could involve providing a solution to acne, general checkups, or dealing with a genetic disease such as muscular dystrophy or cystic fibrosis. Some of the pediatrician’s patients can not speak yet, so they must diagnose the child according to visual and auditory indicators. General pediatricians are hired by family health practices, children’s hospitals, and private clinics, so this means that this field has various job opportunities, and the career field will not suddenly disappear. This career field is not for those who want something easy, their average work week involves around sixty hours of work, with those who are employed clinics or at hospitals working in shifts or being on-call. When a general pediatrician’s patient is admitted for an emergency reason, the general pediatrician could be called into the hospital to consult with the doctors working there. When the interviewee told me this, I was a bit surprised. I figured that the hospital workers pulled up the patient’s file or had it faxed over from their office. I did not even think about the fact that the general pediatrician, who sees the patient more, therefore, knowing their medical background better, would be called in to see the
Gaither (2016) states that a pediatrician checks for mental or physical illnesses, and how to cure these illnesses. Gaither (2016) states that a pediatrician has many methods to successfully determine a child's health. Some examples stated by Gaither (2016) are that a pediatrician does physical exams, gives the child vaccinations, makes sure the child meets milestones in his or her development, a pediatrician also diagnoses illnesses, infections, or other injuries that the child may have, a pediatrician also gives advice for nutrition in foods, and answers questions that you may have about your child’s development. Gaither (2016) also states that pediatricians examine your baby after 48 to 72 hours to check up on your child, and then continue checking to make sure that make sure that the child is developing correctly. Another advantage that Gaither (2016) states of having a pediatrician are that the field only focuses on children, so pediatricians can easily spot abnormalities in a child and they can quickly cure
There are few jobs in today’s world that are essential to our society and being a nurse is one of them. Diane Marks Nurse Clinician of Pediatric Allergy at the Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg Manitoba granted me the privilege of sitting down to discuss her career . Through this interview I was able to gain perspective on how being a pediatric nurse encompasses more than what is written in the job description. It is more than just needles and antibiotics, but many times it means being a mother, a sister, a friend, a councillor, and many other roles in the patient’s life.
Pediatric nurses do a lot of the same tasks as a regular nurse. They draw blood, check vital signs, can perform physical examinations, and order diagnostic tests. However, the job of a pediatric nurse goes beyond regular nurses. They must have a caring relationship not only with the patient they are tending to, but also the patient’s family. Parents usually prefer a pediatric nurse over a regular nurse due to the caring relationship they carry. This is well known by the nurses as the caring process. During this process the nurse must help the child and the child’s family step by step with anything they may need at the time. The pediatric nurse provides support, care, and information on how to prevent future problems. Pediatric nursing can be defined as “the practice of nursing with children, youth, and their families across the health continuum, including health promotion, illness management, and health restoration" (Barnsteiner et al). Therefore, you can see from that statement alone there is more than one job to be done by a pediatric nurse. A pediatric nurse can see anywhere from 80 to 100 children a day. They take appointments, walk-ins, and sometimes make home visits. Only when the pediatric nurse finds an abnormality will they refer and send the child t...

The lifestyle is that pediatric nurse sees many children with all kinds of problems that they have to figure out. Many of the pediatric nurses see children with problems that they never have ruined into himself, but have to find out what is wrong with the children. The lifestyle of a pediatric nurse is always changing due to the patients they are seeing from birth to age 18. The day's pediatric nurse has been constantly changing. Pediatric nurse schedule is their no typical day many of their days are changing and not every day is the same.
“There are only two things a child will share willingly: communicable diseases and his mother's age”-anonymous. Imagine a world without pediatricians. Who would have the expertise to care for your child? From birth to age 18 Pediatricians have what it takes to ensure your child goes from a caterpillar to a beautiful butterfly. The career of a pediatrician is determination. You must be determined to make your patient feel better no matter what. In my research I will be discussing the career of a pediatrician, their influence on society and more.
I have always wanted to work in the medical field since I was a child. Around four, I told my pediatrician during a well- check visit that I wanted to grow up and be just like her. My love of infants and children strongly influenced my career choice because I want to have the ability to help sick children who do not have the ability to help themselves. I have considered many options to enter the healthcare field from nurse, to doctor, and finally came to the conclusion that what I truly wanted out of my future resided in a career as a Physician Assistant. Becoming a PA is not something that I have considered lightly.
One important detail of my future I would share with myself is about all the different hospitalizations I had. During these hospitalizations for surgery, I had met a Child Life specialist. I would explain that a Child Life specialist is a person who works with pediatric patients to help them understand what is going on around them in the hospital. When explaining to myself about the duties of a child life specialist, they use different treatment methods such as, therapeutic play, talking to the child and family about a procedure, distraction during medical procedures, and medical education. I would remind myself that the staff at Mayo, Clinic has done those things with you, and it really helps you get through a rough time and not be so scared or anxious next time. I would explain that a Child Life specialist works with children to help with the emotional part of the hospital stay. While explaining my career choice, I would show myself that a child life specialist is educated in the field of Child Development to help a wide range of children, teens, and young
I prefer to work closely with patients and build that connection with them.” This answer didn’t really shock me all that much, I think its really common for people to go for pre med and then find/figure out that they wont be able to really establish and connect well with the patients. My next question was simple and asked, “Was it your dream to always become a nurse, and did anyone have an influence on your decision?” Emily explained that she has always wanted to work in the medical field, but didn’t really know which area or career path until college. She also went on to say that both her mother and sister are nurses, but her mother had the most impact because Emily was able to be in the hospital a lot during high school and started volunteering when she was young. Knowing Emily’s background it doesn’t surprise me that she went for nursing, there is clearly a family history of it. Also, with Emily volunteering at a young age she was really exposed to the hospital setting which would help her choose a career. I just got a volunteer position at St. Paul Children’s Hospital which I am very excited for because I will be able to experience the hospital setting and really see why Emily is so excited about nursing. My last question was, “What made you want to work with
Each day, medical research is taken to new and improved levels changing life as we know it. The experiments grow ─along with technology─ and shape this world for the better. Since no one in this world is alike, treatments are being discovered to take care of patients in their own ways. To fit with all these differentiated needs, healthcare has been broken up into multiple categories. Each section is specifically responsible for the unique care of patients but the end goal over all, is the same (treating others). One of the best known units of healthcare that is needed today is Pediatrics. Children under the age of five in America receive better healthcare from their pediatrician than an average family doctor. The specialist in the medical field came to this conclusion by stating that a pediatrician has the specialized knowledge needed in caring for the youth population. As I prove this study to be factual, my research paper will explain how pediatrics came about over time, how much of an alteration there is between a pediatrician and a family doctor, and why this particular care is essential to all children.
Another good aspect of this job is that they only focus on the health of children, rather than all of the age groups. An adult and a child are so different, they are nearly two different species. If a child is brought to a doctor who specializes in all age groups, the child would not be getting the same kind of attention that he or she would be getting, compared to that from a doctor who specializes only in children. Doctors that specialize in all age groups are used to make quick, rough, and fundamental actions needed for the healing of the patient. One does not simply treat a child the same way an adult would be treated.
In the future, I hope to pursue my career dream of becoming a pediatrician. Pediatricians can be identified individuals who specialize in giving medical care to children and adolescents between infancy to adulthood at eighteen years of age. I became inspired to become a pediatrician due to my immense love of children. Perhaps I have an innate intuition for taking care of people being that I have always felt that I excel at taking care of others. The idea of taking care of others truly makes me feel that I serve a purpose, not only to better the life of myself but the life of others. Therefore, I believe that becoming a pediatrician will help me combine the best of both worlds into a career that I adore and cherish.
From a young age, I was drawn to the healthcare field, not because the amount of money doctors, nurses and other health professionals made, but because of the dedication and contentment I saw on their faces helping someone in need. Growing up everyone wanted to become a doctor or a nurse and as a little child being a doctor or a nurse was a profession many parents wanted their child to pursue as a career. Needless to say, I fell into that category because I had high hopes that one day I will become a nurse. However, that dream came to a halt.
