Barites are a solid mineral that combines barium and Sulphur. It is composed of Barium sulfate (BaSO4). The word barite is a Greek word derived from the word “barys” which means “heavy” which is with regards to its high specific gravity which makes it exceptionally suitable for its many applications in areas of medicine, manufacturing and industrial uses. Barite is the principal ore of Barium. Pure barites contain the following below (“Barite Mineral Data,” n.d.)

Briefly, vein deposits have complex geometry and may often be extracted from surface or underground as a co-product of lead or zinc mining. Residual deposits are shallow enough to be mined open cast using dozers, excavators or front-end loaders. Bedded barite deposits are more extensive and have more consistent grades; these can be exploited by large-scale open pit methods, followed by relatively simple processing. Barite is extracted by both surface and underground mining, generally followed by simple physical processing methods to produce a correctly sized product and to remove extraneous (mainly silicate gangue) materials. The length of the vein ranges from 15 – 180 meters and the width from 1.2 to 4.3meters and the depth at maximum 10meters (Nigeria Geological Survey Agency, 2011). The barites colors in these areas vary from white to pink with a specific gravity of 4.0 - 4.36. Estimated reserved of barite in Adamawa is 332,130 metric tons(Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, 2010)
2.2.2 Benue State
Barites deposits in Benue state is in form of vein and cavity filling which occurs as a result of hydrothermal solutions during Santonian deformation depositing barites in fissure formed (Nigeria Geological Survey Agency, 2011). These deposits are found in Markudi, Gboko, Ushongo, Vandeikya and Guma local Government areas of Benue State house by igneous to metamorphic rocks of the Pre-Cambrian as well as in shale and sandstones. Barites in these areas are white and reddish brown in colours with a specific gravity of 3.7 to 4.4.the vein deposit is not long but the width is 3 meters and depth is about 20 meters. Chemical analysis of barites samples in Benue state shows that the ore composition of 76% - 86% BaSO4, 5- 21% silica and about 3% iron oxide and the reserved estimate is about 307,657 metric tonnes (How We Made it in Africa,

The purpose for this lab was to use aluminum from a soda can to form a chemical compound known as hydrated potassium aluminum sulfate. In the lab aluminum waste were dissolved in KOH or potassium sulfide to form a complex alum. The solution was then filtered through gravity filtration to remove any solid material. 25 mLs of sulfuric acid was then added while gently boiling the solution resulting in crystals forming after cooling in an ice bath. The product was then collected and filter through vacuum filtration. Lastly, crystals were collected and weighed on a scale.
The third alluvial deposition consists of sand, silt and minor inter-bedded gravel, and again indicates Brimbank Park’s changing geology over time. (Geological map of Victoria, 1973). These deposits, as well as a nearby fault suggest volcanic activity 5-1.6 million years ago, which explains the olivine basalt (fig. 2) deposits which date back to to the Silurian and Tertiary period.
Procedure: Anisole (0.35mL, 0.0378mol) was obtained and placed in a pre-weighed 25 mL round bottom flask, along with 2.5 mL of glacial acetic acid and a magnetic stir bar. Then the reaction apparatus was assembled, the dry tube was charged with conc. sodium bi sulfate, the 25 mL round bottom was attached to the apparatus, and 5 mL of Br2/HBr mixture was obtained and placed in the round bottom. The reaction took place for 20 minutes. An orange liquid was obtained and placed in a 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask along with 25 mL of water and 2.5 mL of conc. Sodium bisulfate soln. The solution was then placed in an ice bath to precipitate and then the solid product was filter in a Buchner funnel. These crystals were then re-dissolved minimum amount of hot solvent (heptane) and recrystallized. Once a dry product was obtained, a melting point was established (2,4-Dibromoanisol mp 55-58 C) and percent yield was established (52%).

Acid mine drainage refers to water (leachate, drainage or seepage) that has come into contact with oxidised rocks or overburden that contains sulphide material (coal, zinc, copper, lead). Keller, 2000; U.S.G.S. ; U.S.E.P.A., 2002). A common sulphide is pyrite, or iron disulfide (FeS2). Throughout this essay, it will be pyrite that will be the primary sulphide considered. Acid mine drainage is not a new phenomenon, early mining techniques utilized gravity to avoid water pooling, resulting in the water becoming polluted by acid, iron, sulphur and aluminium (U.S.E.P.A., 2002).
