Introduction:
Autonomous Cars or the Self Driving Cars are capable to drive themselves without any human intervention. The Autonomous cars are designed such that they can drive themselves by sensing their environment and navigate without human input. Autonomous cars sense their surroundings using technologies like RADAR, LIDAR, GPS and Coy computer vision. Some autonomous vehicles update their maps based on sensory input, allowing the vehicles to keep track of their position even when conditions change or when they enter uncharted environments. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), United States has classified these self driving cars in some levels. For example, Level 0- The driver completely controls the vehicle at all times. Level 1-Automated braking and electronic stability control of the vehicle are automated. Level2- Two controls can be automated in combination like cruise control along with lane keeping. Similarly the other levels have advanced controls, like car senses conditions when it requires the driver to take control, in another level the car performs all the safety critical functions for the entire trip.
A very common question arises that why do we need Self-Autonomous cars?
Consider a scenario: After a long day at work, you are heading to a trip early morning next day and you have errands to complete before you leave for a weeklong vacation to Caribbean and attend a call while driving. With rush hour traffic in Los Angeles, 20 minutes commute is looking like 90 minutes commute.

Since the dawn of time, humanity has improved technology in order to perform tasks more efficiently and effectively. However, particularly within the last few year, the development of technology has increased significantly. As technology continued to improve, many believe the time has come to replace humans with machines that can do the same job. According to a survey done by Delphi, 98% of industry respondents say they are automating to increase efficiency. (Source 11, 455)
Have you ever feared that your loved one or even someone very close to you will be involved in a fatal car accident every time they left the house? Drunk driving is a factor in nearly one-third of all fatal accidents. Even if you aren’t the one driving, you are still at risk any moment to get involved in an accident that could’ve been prevented. By legalizing fully self-driving cars, we won’t have to fear the pain of losing a loved one. We could have a quick fix to all of this madness easily. The number of traffic accidents are soaring at 1.3 million deaths a year. Drunk Driving is still one of the number one causes of vehicle deaths; therefore, the government should allow self-driving cars to become legal to combat the issue. If we don’t act now to combat this issue we will have to deal with the consequences it will bring.
Imagine a world where you can get into a car, push a button, and go where ever you want to go without the hassle of driving. Several car companies, such as Tesla and Honda, have been rumoring about self-driving cars (also known as autonomous cars). The real question people ask is how do they work and when are they coming out? These self-driving cars work by including various sensors and cameras built into the chassis of the vehicle.
GM is already producing the technology catering to the autonomous driving system in instalments as each new car produced, displays a prototype of a sophisticated “assisted driving” feature. Drivers of the Cadillac ATS sedan, a mid-sized car with a driver assistance, can now leave it to drive itself and maintain a safe distance in steady traffic. It can also measure a parking space and steer itself into it, read traffic signals, and warn the driver if he breaks the speed limit. Emergency brakes that overrule the driver’s actions in the case of an accident, add to special features that will be seen in automatic cars.
Self-driving cars are now hitting a few roadways in America, and are showing people just a small glimpse into what could be the future of automobiles. Although Google’s self-driving cars are getting a lot of attention now, the idea of a self-driving car has been around for quite a while actually. These cars have been tested to their limits, but the American people have yet to adopt the technology into their everyday lives. A brief description of their history, how they work, and finally answer the question, will self-driving cars ever be adopted widely by the American public?
Companies like Google, Tesla and Nissan, among others, have announced over the past few years that their companies are trying to develop self-driving or autonomous cars [Ref. 1 and 2]. Self-driving cars can provide many benefits to the average consumer. Studies have shown that because computers can react and process information many times faster than a human being, crashes on streets and roads can be decreased with quick and consistent evasion maneuvers by the autonomous car. They can also help maximize fuel economy by calculating the most direct and fastest routes. When the driving of an autonomous car demonstrates that the computer can safely and reliably transport the passengers to their destination, this frees up the passengers to do other things that they would not normally be able to do if they were driving the car manually. For this reason, self-driving cars can help maximize productivity of their passengers.
The term autonomous refers to the capability of acting independently, or having the freedom to do so. A self-driving car is an autonomous car, which has the ability to sense its environment and navigating without any human operations. These types of cars are built to make safe and smart decisions on the road. In the past years, automobile companies have begun to introduce advanced driver assistance systems that are capable of parking, switching lanes, and braking in case of an emergency on their own, without the driver’s assistance. Automated vehicles are capable of maneuvering through street traffic, as well as other natural and man-made obstacles along the way. Therefore, this technology might completely change the methods of transportation.
Self-driving cars are the wave of the future. There is much debate regarding the impact a self-driving car will have on our society and economy. Some experts believe fully autonomous vehicles will be on the road in the next 5-10 years (Anderson). This means a vehicle will be able to drive on the road without a driver or any passengers. Like any groundbreaking technology, there is a fear of the unforeseen problems. Therefore, there will need to be extensive testing before anyone can feel safe with a vehicle of this style on the road. It will also take time for this type of technology to become financially accessible to the masses, but again alike any technology with time it should be possible. Once the safety concern has been fully addressed
Technology is evolving faster than ever these days, however there is one technology that could revolutionize the transportation industry. This technology is called autonomous cars, also known as self-driving cars. Autonomous cars can be defined as a vehicle that is capable of sensing its environment, and navigating without human input. Using different techniques such as GPS and radar, autonomous cars can detect surroundings, thus removing the human element in driving. This would have a positive effect in more ways than we could ever imagine. Research suggests that self-driving cars will become more abundant in the future because they will be more cost-effective, enhance safety, and decrease traffic congestion.
While the idea of self-driving cars seems futuristic and far away, society is actually very close to seeing them on the road. Taking the wheel away from humans and putting them into the hands of computers and artificial intelligence will obviously change travel forever. As a result, there are many questions that need to be addressed before people feel comfortable trusting automated vehicles. What type of technology will be necessary to ensure self-driving cars operate safely and think like humans? Will they really make roads safer? Will people buy them? How will they affect traffic?
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), fatalities involving a vehicle have reduced by 64% from 1994 to 2013[2]. Many of these accidents are avoidable and some occur in a variety of situations. These situations include times when a distracted driver collides with a vehicle in its blind spot while attempting to change lanes, or fails to notice a stopped vehicle ahead to properly apply the brakes in time. Through the aid of modern technology, more accidents can be avoided. Automotive Sixth Sense is a transformation of non-autonomous vehicles into autonomous vehicles. Automotive Aftermarket Automatic Accident Avoidance Apparatus (A6th) will help to reduce collisions. This aftermarket product accomplishes goals
Driverless Cars Driverless cars are supposed to be the future. But for that to happen a lot will have to change. Driverless cars are supposed to be the safest and smartest cars on the market. For driverless cars to be deemed safe for the road is the biggest problem.
The meaning of an autonomous car is a vehicle that can guide itself without the control of a human. This kind of vehicle has become reality being named, “futuristic” in the year 2017. This kind of car is where computers take almost complete control of the vehicle that you may be eventually driving. There are a couple names for an autonomous car, you may hear it called a “Self Driving Car”, “Robot Car” “Driverless Car” or the correct
By implementing self-driving cars into society, technology truncates this human error. Some argue technology has not come far enough for autonomous vehicles to be in control in every situation the vehicle comes across on the road. They point out driverless vehicles that have crashed while in test runs, however they fail to recognize that Google has tested self-driving cars on over 2 million miles of roadway and out of all this driving, there have only been a total of 13 accidents (Montenegro). The cameras and sensors used in autonomous vehicles are enhanced by the use of artificial intelligence, and contribute to significantly less accidents than those caused each day by human-driven
Traffic congestion, is one of the major problems faced in the capitals and major cities in most countries. As with the increase in the growth rate, comes the growing demand for the use of transportation. This works with the response to the needs of the community.
