What is an Athletic Director? An Athletic Director is someone who puts time into teaching kids how to play sports properly and safely while teaching the importance of teamwork, how to interact with other with other kids without conflict, and how to have fun, that’s in important role to play in today’s school system. They teach kids that it’s okay to not to win every game as long as they’re having fun is all that matters. They teach kids how to make new friends and to enjoy the sport. Athletic Directors can teach any level of a school, every school in America has one in their sports department to organize and keeps all the sports running smoothly.

Depending on what elementary school the Athletic Director is working as they can receive the least amount of benefits. As of 2015, Athletic Directors are expected to be paid around 103,650 dollars per year, but in North Carolina, Athletic Director’s make around 97.500 dollars per year, that’s about 46 dollars an hour. Athletic Director’s work a seventy-hour workweek, between a regular school day and sport related events. This puts Athletic Directors in the 10th – 90th percentile. Earning a master’s degree will raise the salary at maximum 5%. In America, an Athletic Director is needed in every school. In 2012, researches estimated the job outlook on hiring Athletic Directors were expected to grow 15% over the next ten years. In 2013, there were 161,800 available job opening for an Athletic Director position. Job openings are expected to grow due to increasing enrollments in schools and colleges. Most schools are adding more than one position as a Athletic Director due to increasing number of students each year, so it's getting more complicated for one person to keep the sports department running smoothly without complications. Athletic Directors will have to undergo stress with dealing with organizing game days, scheduling a makeup game when there is a canceling of a game. Athletic Directors should be able to work patiently with kids of all ages. Behind the scenes, they get all the equipment ready for the sports that require them. They get sports schedules together for the teams and wash team uniforms and they keep up with the wins and the losses, they deal with conflicting coaches and parents when necessary. Most Athletic Directors spend most of their dealing with problems and conflicts no one is aware of and brings things back into order. Athletic Directors work a seventy-hour week dealing with all the issues that occur. Athletic Director’s have an extremely important job dealing with kids, being how impressionable they are. The job serves more than one purpose; Children look up to Athletic Directors being their friend, teaching them new skills and pushing them to be the best they can possibly be. Athletic Director can also be considered as a counselor in the school system, dealing with conflicts between students and
player. In conclusion, being an Athletic Director can be a challenging yet fun-filled job. You would have to be willing to put forth a whole lot of time and effort, willing to give up weekends because there’s a tournament and the Athletic Director has to be there. Being willing to represent your school through the ups and the down, considered to be the public face of your school. Per say, the Athletic Director is in the spotlight when every a school team is playing in a game, always dealing with parents, student, and the opposing team. To add on to the list of duties, Athletic Directors have to be CPR certified in case and an emergency on or off the playing field. Athletic Director’s have to maintain being CPR certified throughout their career as an Athletic Director. Surveys show that when researchers asked a group of Athletic Directors if they could change they’re professions would they? 87% said they would not change their jobs for any other job. Athletic Directors have an important job in the school system and they take such pride into their performance and the way their students and athletes perform regardless if they lose or win, it’s all about whether or not they poured they’re heart into what sport they’re playing.
In a growing trend that reaches to all corners of the athletic world, coaches are being forced to cope with the added stress of disgruntled parents. More and more they are required to defend personal coaching styles and philosophies, uphold team decisions and go head to head with angry, and sometimes violent parents. The pressure has gotten to the point where coaches all over the country are quitting or being forced out of their jobs by groups of parents. High school athletics should be about learning and having fun, and when parents cross the line between cheerleader and ringleader everyone suffers.
