Antisocial personality disorder is most commonly diagnosed during the late teens and early twenties. There are a few factors that could possibly be the cause of APD, but there is not a specific one that researchers have come up with. Taking the next step to being diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder, mental health professionals evaluate the client in order to find the right treatment for them. Psychotherapy, cognitive therapy, behavior therapy, and medications are all the types of treatments a person with APD may get. Three percent to 30% of psychiatric outpatients are diagnosed with the disorder and more than 70% of the prison populations and substance abuse clinics have antisocial personality disorder. This disorder is also more common in males than females (W. Long M.D, n.d).
Most individuals with antisocial personality disorder do not seek help. Their symptoms may arise from never getting the right treatment at a young age. Family and friends are put in a position to get their loved one to a mental health professional before things get too out of hand. Since the person with antisocial personality disorder acts out and feels no remorse towards others, family members or friends should also get help for themselves. This is important in order to learn how to set boundaries and help protect oneself from the aggression and violence.
Since there is no prevention for antisocial personality disorder. Parents, teachers, and pediatricians may be able to spot signs of it during early childhood. Effective and appropriate discipline, behavior modification, social skills, parent training, family therapy, and psychotherapy may help reduce the chance of the child becoming an adult with antisocial personality
